It's apparently rumoured that the PSPlus games for next week will include Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown (alongside some Star Wars game and Operation: Tango). That would be a far sooner launch than I anticipated for it. Plus "free"!

The below article mentions Sega are schedule to reveal the Virtua Fighter x esports project via a live stream on 27th May.

I was thinking a bit about this with the news that VF5:eSports is going to/has already hit the arcades in Japan. They want people to be pumping their 100 yen coins in at the game centers. If the home experience has decent enough netcode to make it comparable, they lose profit. Why would they want to do so?

Japan still has a thriving arcade scene, so it’s a bit of a conflict of interest.

The arcade scene also why Japan has historically been the most dominant region in most fighting games, though that is hardly what it used to be. Some people attribute Japan's dominance in SF5 to the population density and internet infrastructure of Japan as a factor over the (eventual) arcade release - it's much easier for JP players to get high level matches with each other than anywhere else in the world.

I am very interested to see how the competitive scene will play out for Guilty Gear Strive as it's the first modern Japanese fighting game that is playable at a high level online around the world. Not to mention it's actually possible to play Japanese players without travelling to the region! It'll be interesting to see which particular scenes do well, or if it will all come down to individual dedication. Dragon Ball FighterZ never got an arcade release, and North America is probably the most dominant region in that game. Strive is getting (or has got?) an arcade release though, so I guess we'll see how that affects things!

Was Samurai Shodown ever popular in europe? I know 2 was a big hit in the US but never seen much acclaim for the series over here, the Last Blade even less so.

I've never played KOF 14 online as I couldn't get any matches after the first month, which was extremely worrying for SNKs premier fighting series, but VF seems very healthy by comparison

Also the arcade units in japan for VF actually have net play so there is always someone to play even if they aren't sat next or opposite to you which is pretty cool

Sick cab design, i'd love to own one. Chances are it doesn't weigh 3 tons either :D

EVO schedule! It's snuck up on me this year because it's harder to care when it's all online. Possible there'll be some announcements across the weekend. Interested to see if Sony's ownership of the event will mean anything at all when it's already so far removed from its traditional format.

The JukedGG link they provided should have some streams for today as well.

KoF 98 Ultimate Match Final Edition is getting a rollback patch in the winter :)

Pretty excited about this one since it's always been the KoF I've fancied trying to get into the most. I think it'll probably stand a chance of retaining a decent amount of players too since UM isn't available on Fightcade, Mark of the Wolves dropped off a cliff pretty quickly but 2002 UM is still getting peaks of 150+ players daily a year later. No idea how many of those would be far enough from the usual KoF hotspots to have good connections with but better netcode will certainly help in any case.

Fighter z has the £102 edition down to around £16 on the xbox store, I've ended up buying and gifting it to both my nephews and there seems to be a thriving online community although even on "same level" matchmaking they are struggling not to find someone higher.

Although, I imagine, the more people buying it will amount to some more newbies playing it.

Decent bundle at Humble with SCVI, Power Rangers, Injustice 2 etc. for £9.

The rollback beta for KOF98UMFE is live at the moment, fair player bump but there were only about 30 people in the online mode just now. The few matches I had were pretty rough so probably across the other side of the world and the lag was absolutely the reason for me getting utterly toasted in all of them. To be honest I was happy enough to take a character a couple of times since I have no idea what I'm doing.

Gonna keep checking in with it to see if it gets a bit more of a viable population for those of us in Europe, not sure it'll ever happen with a legacy SNK game though sadly. MotW looked promising for a while after the rollback patch but died off pretty quickly.

Grabbed Samurai Shodown (2019) in the Steam sale. I know the netcode is supposed to be poor, but is it already dead as an online game anyway? I couldn't find a match no matter how much I broadened the search parameters, on ranked or casual. I should be going straight to practice mode, really, but it'll be a shame if there's no chance of any real vs. game.

It was rough finding a match day 1 on PS4. The Steam version never really had a chance considering it had 'dead game' rep to begin with and the situation was compounded by it initially being an Epic store exclusive. It's sad but it's a textbook example of a good game fucked by SNK's poor online and poor decision-making.

Looks like it only has 20-ish people playing the game a lot of the time so I'd be tempted to refund if playing online was the main motivation for buying it, unfortunately.

Nah, I'm happy enough dabbling in the 1P modes, but it's a shame. Never lived anywhere with a local 'scene' either, heh...

I believe adding rollback to a game that's already finished is a nightmare, so I won't hold my breath for any improvements down the line!
