They've announced some casting. The leads will be Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern. Also cast Léa Drucker (Le Bureau Des Légendes), Natasha Little (Silent Witness), Daisy Edgar Jones (Cold Feet), Stéphane Caillard (Marseille), Adel Bencherif (The Prophet) and Guillaume Gouix (The Returned). It'll be 8 episodes of 60 minutes (not sure if they're counting ad time there).

I've given some of it a go, 3 episodes. It's quite different. The link to the name seems very tenuous so far. They're not from Mars, but a whole other star system. No tripods or anything similar. They appear to be from the planet Boston Dynamics, being quite similar to their Spot robot, but apparently having something organic inside. So far no harvesting or changing the planet, just shooting any survivors of the initial attack. I suppose there's still time to bring in some of the more traditional stuff but so far just trading on the name alone.

gave this a go as well and gave up half way through the series, nothing really seemed to be happening and it really is only the War of the worlds in name  rather than story.  as johnc has said above  no tripods, just killer robot dogs things. the initial attack I thought was a good premises  though.

Spoiler

the aliens use a co-ordinated high frequency thing to kill everyone - unless you are underground,  under water etc.. where the frequency cant penetrate and cause death by seizure.  I expected after this first wave attack that the tripods would emerge from the meteors than landed - but nope we get robo dogs instead just roaming and shooting remaining survivors. kinda like the game generation zero (and as dull)

Its a real pitty we get two war of the worlds in the space of a month and both are dud's (the bbc version fell apart for me after a rather decent first episode)

Aw, does it? What goes wrong? I was really looking forward to it, being closer to the book.

Spoiler

be warned spoiler

Spoiler

Episode 2 is  basically  the story is being told in flash back from about 10 years in the future where the earth is a red desert thanks to the alien "red weed ' and mostly between 3  characters in the future working how to fix the earth - but back  in the flash back time line where after a after a decent opening  5 mins of beach and thunderchild action -it slows right down and  stays in one location, a deserted manor house for the rest of the episode (with Martians stalking the survivors) - you loose the sense of a world event and end up with a handful of peeps hanging about a house  waiting for the next one to be popped off.  but with cut backs to the future and more on how can we reverse the red weed stuff in between.

The real annoying thing is that episode one is a fairly decent with the arrival and first wave attacks etc... and a good set up for episode 2,  even though it does have some unneeded back story for the main characters which prob takes up to much screen time that is actually needed

I'm the second episode in, and we've the spoilers from above have just appeared in it.

I've been impressed so far, i actually thought the initial stuff they set out was pretty good.

I won't get through the other six this weekend but i do look forward to seeing where this series goes.

I was mildly annoyed at first that the French bits weren't subtitled, but it turned out that it wasn't sophisticated enough for that to be too big an issue. I thought it was clear enough what was happening without understanding the words.

I'm in the same situation.

What confuses meet is that the streams I watch have really bad subtitles of the English lines that seem to have gone back and forth in google translate five times and only vaguely resemble the actually spoken line. But then drop all subtitles for the French lines completely?

Up to end of episode 6 now. Lord it's boring. The story isn't developing anywhere. Why am I still watching?

It kind of is developing slowly.

I've finished it all now and i think the missing subs are more important.

Yes you can follow the basics but i think more goes on in that observatory then we like to think especially because of all the build up of the signal etc.

But damn that ending is going to be pissing me off unless a second series is produced.

Is it worth a go then? Initial reports I’d seen were a bit meh!

I liked it, I thought it was pretty good in places, FOX in the UK showed it without French subtitles twice which helped no one, but the versions that went up on D+ are good.

I gave Season 1 a second watch after finishing Invasion over at Apple, so I will give Season 2 another watch, hopefully before Season 3 airs over here.

Yes!

https://whatsondisneyplus.com/war-of-the-worlds-season-3-coming-soon-to-disney-uk-ireland/

October the 19th.

Loved the first two seasons, even though I was initially put off as it looked like a generic cash in on the war of the worlds idea, but during lockdown I binged it and have been waiting for the new season for what seems like ages.

One thing that sets it apart from most genre programs recently is that there is a minimal amount of plot armour and no character is safe.

It's already up!

Already it's better off for the professional subtitles.

Once people have caught up, can you tell me if I missed something at the end of season 2 or did they just make all those scenes up in the recap to push the story forward after she's got a bit more famous in real-life?

I don't have to say which bits (spoilers) but anyone that's watched it will know what I mean.
