In fairness, that was a good send off. This was a bad one, which is new I suppose.

 

What I find fascinating is modern shows obsession with characters as named properties (Picard! Data! Q!) but just not really caring about what process brought these characters about that made them successful.

 

It's essentially the same process as making movies out of board games - just another recognisable brand.

By that I'll infer that de Lancie thinks My Little Pony has better script writing than Picard (It does).

Oh, no argument here. But then I think he does actually care about the character of Q, as opposed to how Stewart treats Picard.

this was the only part of the season I could stomach. De Lancie was in character (as much as the script allowed him at times) and the missteps were not down to performance but the material. His scenes were the best by a huge margin. In TNG I used to think DeLancie was a "journeyman" actor (a bit hammy etc) and Stewart was the real deal who helped elevate DeLancie to his level. Now DeLancie is running rings round Stewart and the rest of the cast.

 

In the end they utterly ruined Q with that hug - up til that point in that scene I was thinking it was fucking clunky but Q sacrificing himself to help his favourite human one last time was at least fitting and poignant. (not as fitting as All Good Things but these are the scraps we are foraging for!)

 

I felt the same about Riker and Data (lesser extent) in Season 1. When the actors play the character instead of playing themselves it works. Stewart just can't play Picard anymore.

 

My only hope for Season 3 is that the TNG cast are back and they are offering acting performances that show the characters as they would be - like Q, RIker and Data have been. The scripts will be guff but I'd love to see Geordi and WOrf and Riker et al all on decent form.

I had that hope in season 1 but that clip of All Good Things really hammers it home, Stewart's voice now is too far gone to portray an older Picard as he hasn't got the recognisable characteristics and vocal inflections anymore. I think I have heard a handful of lines that really evoked his Picard performance and they were all the softer spoken lines with no real power. I don't think you can base a whole Season's performance on that even if you wanted to.

 

Ironically having heard him recently I think Shatner could play a 90 yr old Kirk far far better than Stewart can reproduce Picard.

He was near legendary for flubbing his lines on TNG (the bloopers are 75% him :lol:) so the thought of Terry Matalas trying to get things finished on schedule with a 68 year old Michael Dorn does make me chuckle.

A scene of such monumental stupidity that it feels like I've been haunted by it for years. I was hanging some washing the other day and I caught myself in the midst of an involuntary shudder when thoughts of it resurfaced. The saddest thing about it is that you can imagine the writing team being extremely pleased with themselves for sliding that reference in there.
