Please write a teleplay for a new episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It should focus on Riker’s dilemma over whether or not to keep his beard.

Title: The Beard Dilemma

Act 1:

(Opening shot of the USS Enterprise flying through space. Cut to the bridge where Captain Picard is sitting in his chair. Commander Riker enters the bridge with a pensive look on his face.)

PICARD: (noticing Riker's expression) Something on your mind, Number One?

RIKER: (sighing) Captain, I've been thinking about something lately. It's not an urgent matter, but it's been weighing on me.

PICARD: (curious) Go on.

RIKER: (hesitant) It's about my beard, sir.

PICARD: (amused) Your beard? What about it?

RIKER: (serious) I've been considering shaving it off. I know it's not a big deal, but it's been a part of my identity for so long. It feels like a big decision.

PICARD: (nodding) I see. Well, you have my support whatever you decide. But why do you want to shave it off?

RIKER: (sighing) I'm not sure. It's just...I feel like I need a change. And the beard has always been a reminder of my past, of my time on the USS Potemkin.

PICARD: (understanding) I can appreciate that. But it's also become a part of who you are on this ship, Will. It's a symbol of your authority, your confidence.

RIKER: (nodding) I know. That's why I'm torn. I don't want to lose that.

PICARD: (smiling) Well, I'm sure the crew would support you either way. But I suggest you take your time to think it over. It's not a decision to be made lightly.

RIKER: (grateful) Thank you, sir. I will.

Act 2:

(Cut to Riker in his quarters, sitting in front of a mirror. He's holding a razor and looking at his reflection.)

RIKER: (to himself) Come on, Will. It's just hair. You can always grow it back.

(He starts to shave off his beard, but hesitates halfway through.)

RIKER: (to himself) What am I doing? This is crazy.

(He puts down the razor and looks at himself in the mirror.)

RIKER: (to himself) But maybe it's time for a change. Maybe it's time to let go of the past.

(He picks up the razor again and continues to shave.)

Act 3:

(Cut to Riker walking onto the bridge without his beard. The crew members look at him in surprise.)

PICARD: (smiling) Well, Will. I see you've made a decision.

RIKER: (smiling) Yes, sir. I have.

PICARD: (approving) You look good, Number One. Very dashing.

RIKER: (laughing) Thank you, sir.

(Just then, Data enters the bridge.)

DATA: (noticing Riker's appearance) Commander, I must say, your decision to remove your beard is most intriguing.

RIKER: (surprised) Really? Why is that, Data?

DATA: (analyzing) The beard served as a form of nonverbal communication, indicating to others that you are in a position of authority. Without it, you may need to rely more heavily on verbal communication and other cues to convey your status.

RIKER: (nodding) I see. Well, I'm up for the challenge.

PICARD: (smiling) I have no doubt you are, Number One. Welcome to your new look.

(Cut to the Enterprise flying off into space

That’s not to say that Star Trek: Picard is fan service or simply cashing in on nostalgia. If anything, the series continues to make the kind of bold, unorthodox choices for Picard & Co. that have caused frequent uproar among certain sects of devotees. But those same shocking, at times nihilistic moments are made personal and introspective by the acting chops of Stewart, Frakes, and the rest.

Guess what?

People are going to keep cherry picking quotes and reviews that fit their already set opinion? Looks like it. I mean, the overwhelming majority of people who have seen the first bunch of episodes is positive, but I guess the one dissenting voice is the one true review.

Can't wait for the next 10 weeks of the same people telling us how shit everything is, week after week. Everyone already knows, and nobody cares.

I think though that negative review seemed to be saying all the things that made me hate Picard are still a problem, lots of fan service while at the same time not being star trek.

I will of course watch it though if the rllmuk hive mind tells me to.

It is getting plenty of very positive reviews, from places I'd certainly think to go look at before Engadget. (warning, one is kinda spoilery about early plot beats)

That ChatGPT script is great. Now charmed by the idea of a day that’s so slow and boring on the bridge, that Riker brings up he’s considering shaving off his beard. It’s like one of those Gazorra edit videos.

I am watching Picard season 2 to prepare, having been put off it by you guys (I only managed 2 eps originally). 😄 I have so far watched 4 eps. And it's fine. I presume it falls off a cliff... wasn't one episode called the worst bit of Trek ever?

Anyway, I AM MASSIVELY EXCITED FOR SEASON 3!!!!

The Data bit is genuinely quite realistic!
