I wish they'd bin off the the whole cigar chomping affectation for the captain. It doesn't make him look cool, he just looks like twat smoking on the bridge.

That scene in season one where they introduce him sat topless with hits tats, having a wound sewn up while he smokes and swigs booze was like a nerdy 13 years old doodling what they think is a cool badass while they're bored in class.

After the disaster of S1 I wasnt gonna bother, but reading today that they're having a few scenes with the ST:O and Lower Decks ships cg'd in is enough for me to want a peek, as their art design is fucking cool (and way better than the copy-pasted fleet that riker turned up with that time). So to hear that it is actually ok as a viewing experience too is a bonus.

Can’t unsee it now.  You have to wonder how he’s stopped the fire extinguisher going off!

Yay, cautiously optimistic after that opener.

Spoiler

Even saw a Galaxy class ship amongst the fleet. Good to see they are still in service.

But yeah, cigar smoking captain is a bit much!

What presumptuous editing of the thread title. Season one, episode one of Picard wasn’t awful either!

I didn't think so either, but the hive mind (hoho) said other wise.

Spoiler

I quite enjoyed the 'so you didn't like the Starship cut'n'paste job from S1 well here you go' bit. First time we have seen a Sovereign class outside of the movies.

They really don't need to keep explaining why the actors playing immortal characters have gotten older. Whoopi Goldberg doesn't even look *that* much older!

A lot of tedious "here's what's up with all the characters now" scenes that felt very like the TNG movies. But the last act cranked up the tension nicely.

I really like the visual design of the Stargazer. One upside of Patrick Stewart's creative control is that he can stipulate that it doesn't look like complete shit like Discovery.

The content warning that came up at the start (sex! violence! foul language!) made me think it was going to be 'balls out' edgy Trek, (a la https://www.imdb.com/review/rw0648988/ ) but I realised eventually they meant that's the warning for the whole series...

wasnt awful. wasnt great. the interaction with the

Spoiler

borg queen

was fucking rubbish. for all the nice little touches they'd done up to that point, that whole encounter was shoot first and fuck diplomacy. With the worst behaviour of any crew since well.. not since anything because its exactly the same shit as Discovery in that regard. Q was neat to see. But the show is still crippled by the whole main cast being unlikable. Strip out the "remember the stargazer? remember lcars? remember guinan and her bar "10"? remember seven of nine? remember when trek was good? strip out all the nostagia  and it wasnt that great. the pacing was all over the place. everything looks dull and depressing. even starfleet academy/hq looked like a prison on the outside.  ALSO

picard's wine. grown in real soil, with real sunlight, i suppose real water and they're meant to look like proper organic quality grapes. only for them to then be dematerialised, and rebuilt from matter into the back of the floating picking machine. surely at that point you might as well fuck off growing them and just replicate the fucking grapes in the first place. hell why stop there, might as well just ask for "wine" from the replicators and pour it into bottles.

To me it this episode is similar to the best moments/episodes of Season 1. When it plays the memberberries (like it is heavily this episode) then it is good for old people like me who loved TNG (like the Riker Troi episode).  Picard as an old man works for me some of S1 and not others with certain episodes great and others striking a sour note (you're getting Picard WRONG!) - this one felt like a good depiction of Picard. And I love the idea of you know who being back and all that stuff.

The elements of the show that are new? mmmmmeh they are ok ish, not as bad as Discovery (but what is) but pretty bland.

I still expect this Season to be all over the place tone wise like it was on Season 1 but maybe hopefully not hitting quite the same lows season 1 did!

That opener was decent. But caution advised- I remember being intrigued by the first season opener too. Everybody getting a job in Starfleet after what went down in S2 seems improbable. More chance of Matt Hancock being Prime Minister by Xmas 2023 I would have thought!

Trying to remember the characters in this from Season 1 - I've got:

Robo-Picard

Captain Lung Cancer

Space Legolas

Aggravating Science Lady

Personality Transplant Seven of Nine

The woman who had a twin or something

RAFFI

Boy Band Romulan

Is that everyone? I can't wait to see these guys again

Aren't Space Legolas and Boy Band Romulan the same character?

True, and I thought the same, but was willing to overlook it as the brief before/after with Q was nicely done, and Guinan was so charasmatic generally that I'd happily watch an entire episode of then just chilling at the bar. Also, old Q looks pimp as fuck in that suit, kudos to the costume dept. That patterning could come right out of Deus Ex.

And yeah everyone utterly shat themselves at the end with discipline right out the window, but I like that some things have that effect on starfleet.

Was I the only one who was like

Spoiler

ok, soooooo........mirror-universe borg, maybe??

I was thinking of this twat:

Whereas this is Space Legolas:

picard-episode-4-absolute-candor.jpg

But yeah they're both about as shit as each other, so I can see why you'd get them confused.

I quite enjoyed the opening episode of season 2, unlike Discovery this show does at least know when to slow down a bit. The scenes with Guinan and Q were excellent. Poor old Pat Stew does look very old now though, he's actually quite doddery. I'm reserving judgement on the show as a whole  because as others have pointed out, season 1 also started quite strong then completely shit the bed with the finale.

The quality scale of modern Star Trek shows still goes The Orville > Lower Decks > Picard > genital herpes > Discovery, and I can't see that changing any time soon.

Didn't like it at all, sadly. Immediately lost confidence from the opening scene and it just got worse and worse as it went along. I really don't see how it was better than anything from the first series, beyond the ships and the uniforms not looking as terrible as they did the last time around.

I know that I'm old and that I'm not going to get "proper" Trek anymore, that ship has also long since sailed. But anyway.

Spoiler

There are also no stakes anymore when it's just an android copy of the real Picard. Where was Q when he was dying for real at the end of the first series?

Never mind that, what about the

Excelsior? I was expecting another new model but it looks like it might still be the original with refitted engines. Now that's a ship that's been around.

I didn't see any galaxy class in there at all, and I paused to check, I just saw these Ambassador Class? But I did see a few Sovereigns!

Haha I was thinking exactly that. Do everything for "authenticity's sake", only to teleport them a few metres away into a box. Punters won't be buying that when future Panorama do an expose!
