I hope its not as bad as you guys are saying, but I suspect it is.

Why cant we have decent Trek?!?

Because Alex Kurtzman :(

Edit: watching the RLM review, and the Borg bit with Picard having a panic attack on the cube, whereas in Descent he's all like "Huh Borg eh? Oh well"

That was bad

Spoiler

Aren't vulcans slightly telepathic, that's why they have the whole mind meld thing right.

It was discovery level of stupid

Anyone want to take bets on the final episode having the line

"Ships coming out of warp Picard, Sir....... it's the Enterprise!"

From the comments section of that RLM vid:

Quote

“I am not. I am not doing Star Trek Discovery Season 3. I refuse.” -Rich Evans.

Yes he will. Mike will hold Rich down and force Season 3 into him if he has to.

So Noonian Soong, his great grandfather and his son all look the absolute fucking same?

And since when did Soong have a son? Wasn't the whole android-building thing an allegory for him making a child, like the son he never had? That he always told to call him "father"?
(Apparently not any more! "BTW, got a secret son too, lol!!")

I quite liked the idea of giant space flowers, that's something I haven't seen before; but it was pretty fucking weird when you think about it. Are they, like, robot flowers? What's the connection with synth-building facility and giant space flora? Seems a bit specialist!

Nitpicking, but: it's nice to see that, after ST: Discovery showed us that being poked in the eye doesn't actually cause any demonstrable harm to a normal human, it does in fact conveniently kill a super-human android.

Extra nitpicking: "Spot 2"? Look, I think there already was a Spot 2. Data definitely had two cats. Long-haired one with the big bushy tail and then later a short haired one. That changed sex. And turned into a newt. (It got better.)

So, uh, yeah, not a good episode.

Putting the trivial nitpicking aside, I just can't buy into the premise - this false moral dilemma that turns synths into psychopaths who want to commit genocide to save themselves. Unless they're actually all descendents of Lore, not Data. It's damned lazy writing.

Two hundred CGI ships exploding in a kaleidoscope of lasers in the finale, then? *sarcastic thumbs up!!*

Oh god, where to begin. Mass Effect 3 vibes aplenty.

I didnt mind it until

Spoiler

the mind meld by an android rubbish, and it is rubbish as no other race, let alone synthetic has ever done that. Then they just rushed headfirst into the ME3 higher plane of existence synthetics nonsense. RLM predicted it in the review I posted, as did you yourself earlier in the thread @Thor. This is lazy, and feels like plagiarism, sorry.

And the ending is gonna be more pew pew it seems with that many Romulan ships (what happened to all the old Romulan ships? D'Deridex onwards seems to have been forgotten....). Not looking forward to next episode, and its looking like its going to be a cliff hanger ending to boot

Also yeah @Sprite Machine, I was laughing my arse off when I watched that video. The Instagram clip "killing my old boss - LOL" and "Man I hope this deflector dish laser shit works or we're fucked LOLOLOLO"

Cant wait for the next review from RLM now!

Spoiler

I thought the whole vibe of the colony itself was quite Next Gen, especially all the togas and that. But really Picard, what else do you think the androids can do? Sit there and get massacred? Of course they're gonna call up the big bad android gods.

I do like Soji's evil sister though. Gold is very becoming of her!

Yeah! i was like yes! yes yeahhhh but then ah no you've fucked it. Its all nice set dressing and nostalgia but that just masks the underlying issues thats been around in all new Trek.

My new crackpot speculative theory is:

Spoiler

Maddox gets huffy when he’s told he can’t keep on making The Best Androids in the Universe, fucks off to wherever. With Data long gone and the inferior B4’s bits still on Earth, he takes a punt on Plan C and fires up He Who Should Not Be Switched On Again. They fuck around with his exterior so they can pass him off as Soong’s never before mentioned son if anyone asks and get busy making Harder Better Faster androids. Alter Ego, sorry, Altern Inigo Soong does an Ultron and starts making himself a new and improved body and dopey Anges is going to stay to help him finish. At which point he will gleefully get his usual M.O on and hook up with the Ancient Killer Unknowables From Beyond Space and wipe out organic life because it’s his favourite thing in life.

Then Seven rams a Borg cube down his throat and Jean Luc gives a heartwarming speech about synthesis and everyone goes home resolving to be better. Just off-screen, Q wipes a single tear from his eye.

I do quite like the idea that soong did have a biological kid, and then just fucking sidelined him while spoiling his favorites.

:D We all know the occasional dysfunctional family like that.

Also, my own theory:

If Picard is dying, what's the betting he somehow ends up in that synthetic body, allowing for a convenient recasting for future seasons?

I totally agree.

Spoiler

I don't know how yet, but that dude is Lore.  Be seems far too happy with the idea of everyone supposedly like him getting killed.

Otherwise he is pretty much his character in Enterprise who is also identical.

The good: Space flowers, Rios showing off his S-rank at Thumper skills, the colony being quite early-TNG/TOS like colourful space hippy nonsense, using the fact that the synths had tech centuries ahead of the organics to let the plot move along at a decent clip. (Mind meld, loads of Soong-type and more advanced androids, pocket sized ship repair doohickey.) Agnes getting something to do. Sutra was a good character, very Lore-esque.

The bad: The writing, directing and editing plummeting into a toilet compared to the past two episodes. It felt like something from Discovery or the JJ Abrams movies. "25 light years in fifteen minutes"? Fuck off. The utterly terrible crashed Cube and La Sirena sets. Why was there a NatWest symbol on the La Sirena hull? Why are the synths so varying in intelligence? TNG made it clear that Soong's earlier efforts before Data were not viable to keep active. Spiner (and Jeri Ryan) turning up to cash a cheque. The totally disconnected scene where Patrick Stewart makes it very clear he's not coming back for a second series. (I would be really surprised if this 'they're going to use the robot body to recast Picard' theory is true. In real world terms, what sells the show is Patrick Stewart's star power, in the same way the Alien sequels had to come up with ways to be about Ripley.)

Sigh, what a waste. Still, looking forward to Soong morphing into Data/Lore/Brent Spiner's character from Night Court for no reason and a meaningless giant space battle next week.

Picard dies and the ship gets called 'Picard' is my guess

Spoiler

They might just be hedging their bets in case Patrick isnt around for the next series. If hes up and about, great! If not, considering filming is probably on hold now, then they got get outs to finish the story.

That last episode was a mess of threads and strings that almost entirely added up to a thousand fuck alls.

Errrr

Spoiler

What was the reason to go to the Borg cube?  And why did the Borg cube even turn up?

Errrr

Spoiler

Are people mad at Dr. McKillmadox Face or not?  I genuinely can't tell.

Errrr

Spoiler

He's Romugone off somewhere presumably to tell the Romulans to attack the colony when they are going to attack the colony anyway.  I don't care anymore

It's turned onto piffle.

I'll give you that last one, but perhaps you weren't paying attention for the other two.

Spoiler

They went to the Borg cube to see if Spagolas and Hugh had survived. They decided to all go together because Soji didn't want to split the group, and really wanted to see if Hugh was okay.

As for Jurati, it's not that they're not mad, it's they're more understanding of her. It wasn't just a little warning she was shown by the blues sister, it was a powerful traumatic vision, shown in the previous episode to completely break some people's minds, and it transferred as a mind meld. It fucked Jurati up, and pretty much compelled her to kill Maddox.

Sigh.

I thought that was terrible, and I'm not holding out much hope for the conclusion either. This show's had some really nice moments, but the problem with it being so serialised is that can only really be judged by the quality of the main story.

I was defending some of the show's decisions earlier on, like the shift to a populist, racist Federation, but I was hoping the show would do something interesting with it. It hasn't at all, and it's just one way the show has taken something as special as the Star Trek universe and turned it into unrecognisable mush.

I really want to be pleasantly surprised next week. :(

That made me chuckle. Also, a Borg cube just lands on a planet like that, and no-one died, and the ship looks to be in one piece?

Its worth it for the RLM reviews for the comedy.
