Turn your Wii-U into a fantastic emulation machine

Poking around it looks like i first need to follow the guide at wiiu.hacks.guide. Are people generally just installing haxchi? When it talks about relaunching each time you turn the console on, how long/how much of a faff is that?

Then it seems I need Disc2App to create images from my discs. Finally, I think I need WUP installer. Do I need to do anything to a new HDD? Presumably there's a way of having the Wii-U format/configure it?

You don't need to run the hack once a game is installed to the hard drive.

I only run Haxchi when I need to rip and install a new Wii U game. Then the Wii U thinks it is a game downloaded and installed from the eshop. It even installs the DLC you've bought when you boot the Wii U without starting Haxchi.

You only need to run the hack when you want to run homebrew, emulators and GameCube games.

Amazing. Exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks.

Haxchi is probably best set to NOT auto load when you boot up a Wii U.

You don't want to accidently go online with it enabled and get your Nintendo account flagged as dodgy.

Can you avoid that though. I mean, don't you have to be online to hack the thing in the first place?

It's.just a precaution incase you're using certain multiplayer game hacks or sampling DLC from the high seas.

I think games like Smash are hard coded to check your DLC purchases against the store.

So I shouldn't try online multiplayer Mario kart with my my mate then? I've just setup his hacked Wii U, we were going to give it a go

If you haven't downloaded pirated DLC or modded the game it will be fine.

I've installed my Mario kart to the hard drive and played online many times with my paid for DLC.

You should be fine.

Don't load Haxchi if your going online

So I got round to doing this. It's pleasantly mostly straightforward. I've installed Haxchi without the cold boot and I've ripped my first game to the hard drive using Disc2App and WUP Installer. One question: is it safe to allow updates to be applied to any games installed in that way?

Reading up on Wii and GameCube games, is it true to say I that the Wii is still the better option for those? For me, it would mean I could rip my GC games (I think you can do that right?) rather than risking downloading them on my work computer and I can plug my GC controllers and memory cards in. Thoughts?

Actually here's another question: Disc2App gives you the option of dumping a disc game onto external USB device rather than SD card. One you've installed your dumped game, how would you delete the dumped file from the HDD? As I understand it, an exernal HDD formatted by the Wii-U isn't readable by a PC.

Amazing thanks.

I tried to dump to USB and it just hung. Then I remembered I hadn't connected my drive with a Y cable

Then it turns out I ordered the wrong type of Y cable

What a div. Guess I'll continue once I've got the proper Y cable rather than risk buggering it all up.

The game you install to the hard drive is indistinguishable from a game that Wii U installs itself from the eshop. In fact, it thinks it's a disc (just faster) It applies the system key/ticket to the game as it installs across to the drive.

You can just pop onto the eshop and update. !Without Haxchi started!

My Zelda DLC was already installed on the USB - the rip that I installed to the USB picked it up straight away

Hello - I've just bought a WiiU and I am going to do this soft-mod so I can continue to play Wii and GameCube games online. I have a bunch of questions though before I start (the WiiU is a very confusing system so it seems natural that I have lots of questions!)

1 - I've bought my WiiU second-hand - is there anything I should look out for in terms of a potential failed softmod causing issues, or is as I suspect, not an issue?

2 - Why are folks choosing Haxchi over Mocha (with Indexiine)? Is it for the ability to choose a cold boot install?

3 - Can I copy and run ripped Wii and GameCube games to the internal HD -  is it just a process of copying over from a HD or SD Card?

4 - I know I can use the WiiU controller to play GameCube games but can I also use a Wii or WiiU Pro Controller, or do I need to buy the GameCube ports accessory?

5 - Once the vWii is modded can I play GameCube games from disc or do I need to rip them? Is it safe to insert GameCube games into a WiiU?

I basically want to setup with a small curated selection of games across Nintendo formats and (if possible) nothing hanging out of the front or back of the console!

Thanks,

No worries here - hasn't impacted on Haxchi or CBHC. Also in case it helps anyone in the future, I have managed to mostly answer my own questions:

---------

1 - I've bought my WiiU second-hand - is there anything I should look out for in terms of a potential failed softmod causing issues, or is as I suspect, not an issue? I didn't have an issue

2 - Why are folks choosing Haxchi over Mocha (with Indexiine)? Is it for the ability to choose a cold boot install? I still suspect this is the case - I've just gone with normal Haxchi for now

3 - Can I copy and run ripped Wii and GameCube games to the internal HD - is it just a process of copying over from a HD or SD Card? YES! I have GameCube games on the internal HD now using WUP installer (similar to WAD installer on Wii)

4 - I know I can use the WiiU controller to play GameCube games but can I also use a Wii or WiiU Pro Controller, or do I need to buy the GameCube ports accessory? Working fine with Wii Pro Controller and I believe PS4/Switch pads work too.

5 - Once the vWii is modded can I play GameCube games from disc or do I need to rip them? Is it safe to insert GameCube games into a WiiU? It's not save to put GameCube discs in the WiiU! Surprisingly I didn't need to perform the vWii mod to get GameCube games to work.

---------

Still working through some issues with setting up everything how I would like.

Done:

GameCube saves transferred

PSO Episode III working online

Issues:

Wii games online (I don't want to go through vWii just to patch each time I want to play online so looking at seeing if I can permanently patch an ISO instead of using a disc, but information is limited)

PSO Episode I & II crashes on loading network setup page (I think it's a virtual memory card issue - going to try transferring the set-up from Episode III to bypass the set-up page but would like it to work for future changes)

Transferring Wii save data

WiiWare injections

R4 cards were specifically the subject of legal action from Nintendo in the UK and were outlawed by government.  The ruling outlawed any sales, importation, or advertising of the R4 flashcards. The defence of Playables Limited claimed that the R4 flashcards were legal because it uses a homebrew application. However, bypassing Nintendo's security system is against the law in the United Kingdom. So I think that's why we don't discuss them here. Modding systems as far as I know is legal, but selling a product that does it is problematic.

I softmodded my Wiiu with haxchi, and then softmodded the VWii using bathaxx.

I have the homebrew channel in, nintendont loaded on my SD card, but it wont pick my wavebird or wired controllers in any game.

I have been reading about needing a controllers.ini file somewhere on the sd card. I have tried to download it from nintedont's options, but it says network initialised and does nothing.  i'm going to try changing the DNS to circumvent pihole to see if thats the issue, but has anyone else had similar?

I decided to buy a WiiU Pro Controller for GameCube and backward compatible games in the end - it works fine with my injected games (although I always need to ensure Wiimote is 2nd player).

I read that for GameCube controllers better to have them plugged into the back USB ports. In general, I noticed that controller options were quite limited and utilising anything other than native controllers were finicky.

Also from my little list last time:

Wii games online Done. Had to patch the ISO but was straightforward and played some Boom Street yesterday no problem.

PSO Episode I & II crashes on loading network setup page Sorted. This was a progressive scan issue with PAL version of the game so just switched this off temporarily to configure.

Transferring Wii save data Utilised the official 'Pikmin' transfer method between WiiU and Wii which was straightforward

On top of this I have a few games now across all Nintendo platforms (WiiU/Wii/GC/N64/SNES/NES/DS/GBA/GB) in easy access from the WiiU menu - mission accomplished! (although N64 games are still tricky to setup!)

I still haven't hacked my vWii and I just don't see what benefits this would bring? Unless someone can point them out I don't think I will bother.

My favourite part of the setup is playing Phantasy Star Online, Online, just on the WiiU Gamepad controller and with all of the QOL mods available (increased draw distance, proper widescreen in-game through geometry hack, increased quick item select). That alone has made this endeavour worth it!
