Judgment: detective game spinoff from Yakuza series

I was afraid of losing track of this game because Super Mario Maker 2 came out straight afterwards and caused me to not play Judgment for over a week. It would be a real shame if I drifted away and dropped this, so I forced myself away from Mario and made sure to put half a day into it yesterday.

I had some frustrations, however. Side cases opened up, and the first one I started was the tiger jacket case. The homeless people in the park wouldn't talk to me until I bought them bentos -- their dialogue made it clear that they wanted tonkatsu bentos in particular. So I went to Poppo and saw two choices: "Bento" and "Pork Tonkatsu Bento". Obviously they wanted the latter, so I bought them. But the homeless people acted like I hadn't bought anything yet. I spent 15 minutes faffing around -- reloading, restarting, rebuying tonkatsu bentos, googling for answers - even most walkthroughs said I was doing everything right.

The solution? They wanted the regular bento. :hmm:

Then they said I had to go to where "young men hang out". Young men can hang out anywhere! There were no icons on the map to direct me (I couldn't set this as my current activity, it would only show the red marker for the main story). A walkthrough told me they were at the batting centre -- but how the hell would I have known that?

So I was a bit grouchy in this play session. Also have the sad feeling that I was playing out of obligation, and wanted to get back to Mario. Even though Judgment is great.

@SqueakyGHad the same problem with that quest. Ended up with no markers at all and no idea where to go to find young men hanging out! I stumbled on the next step by accident.

I'm still enjoying this, but it does feel lacking coming from Yakuza 6 to this.

I think it's the main protagonists. Kazzy and Majima are far stronger characters than any of the people in this.

Yeah, the lead seems a little too restrained to be beating up street punks in Kamurocho, leather jacket or no leather jacket.

I wanna play as his mate in the garish shirt, instead. I love that shirt.

If they gate anything behind Mahjong in the next game then I’m flying to Japan just to leap at the developers wielding a pushbike.

It's unfortunate for sure - also, the baseball takes a while, but it's the same pitching pattern every time, so keep a notepad handy.

Mahjong quick guide - Try to get one pair of anything (preferably NESW tiles or other weird ones that don't have an obvious sequence), and 'runs' of the rest in your hand - the line of tiles nearest you where the game auto sorts the tiles into a sequence.

1, 2, 3 or  2, 3, 4, or whatever's fine too just so long as you have 3 sequential numbers. I think you need 3 runs (might be 4, I forget how many tiles are in play at once), and one pair. Once you only need one tile to finish those runs, hit square to have the game auto find it for you through Riichi, basically just cycling and discarding until you get the one you need. Then it's Tsumo time for a win!

Oh, and cancel every Pon or Chi that comes up.

It's a hellish game, designed by and catering to bastards. Doing this though, it doesn't take too long to start getting some wins.

It's more work than it should be to friend some of these buggers, but the payoff is great when you go into the final sub mission.

I can’t shake the idea that Toshihiro Nagoshi has basically just put himself with longer hair in the game by creating Takayuki Yagami.

Isn't it Japanese actor Takuya Kimura?

Started this proper last night and it's great. The attention to detail that the dragon engine can pull off is stunning - looking out of your office window into the rainy streets below can look photo-realistic at times.

Agreed to defend Hamura, stumbled into a cat cafe and then spent ten minutes on Virtua Fighter 5 before crashing on the couch. (I still can't believe that they just slapped a complete VF5 in there like it ain't no thang...).

I'm not finding many shiny collectables down filthy back alleys though - are there any?

It's criminal that this thread is lingering on page 6 of the forum, the game deserves a much bigger audience. The story has got its hooks into me now and, so far at least, it's second only to Y0 for awesome plot beats and twists. Hamura makes for an amazing villain.

I also liked that bit at the end of chapter 2 where, rather than simply run away from the angry gangsters with guns, you nab a skateboard and pull off some sick tricks while skitchin'. Only in a RGG game...

There's a sense of dread that's kind of missing from some of the Yakuza villains; there, your opponents still have a sense of honor and while they would beat you to a pulp, mano a mano, they'd respect you while they did it; but this guy's just sick.

Yeah absolutely, he's really threatening and scary. Definitely from the same mould as Kuze/Awano from Y0, rather than whoever the baddies were in Kiwami 1 and 2.

I'm really annoyed with myself for not playing this enough, and I'm worried that if I don't put in some sessions I'm going to drop it. That would be a terrible shame because it's just as good as Yakuza games. I'm still on chapter 3 and haven't put in a good session for over 2 weeks.

The problem is that Super Mario Maker 2 came out at the same time, and that's a timesink if you create courses. Then there was the heatwave and I didn't want to use the PS4 Pro while it's that hot and humid. Then the weekend just gone was cool enough for consoles... but I ended up making another Mario course instead! Arrrrgh.

How could you forget the trouser thief of Sotenbori.

This is 20 banger in the PS4 sale. Should I get it? (I’m obviously going to get it).

I’m going to Tokyo in March and would really like to indulge in a bit of virtual tourism to get myself pumped up for it by kicking about the most modern, contemporary up-to-date version of Kamurocho / Kabukicho before I go, which would be the Judgment iteration I believe.

I’m actually swithering over booking myself into APA Hotel in “Theatre Square” when I go:

Wanna get my cunt kicked in with a bicycle while I’m cutting about the area doing the ‘Drunkard’.
