Is there anywhere particularly good to stream/obtain Taskmaster NZ? Especially season 1, which I couldn't immediately find.

 

Also, I don't suppose there's a Bleeped variant of that too, is there? If it's anything like the regular UK version then it's going to be a bit sweary for sharing with our daughter! (We nearly gave the non-bleeped UK special from last NY a go, because she loves Rylan, but glad I grabbed some subtitles for it and checked those first - not very suitable, it turns out!)

I like Taskmaster a lot but this seems somewhat niche.

Had to double-check it isn’t April 1st after reading that. The streaming market is already saturated enough without individual franchises getting in on the act.

 

However, do think it will be pretty popular, at least in the short-term. TM has a pretty active fan base, and even if 10% sign-up, Little Alex Horne will have lots of spare quids to put between his front teeth.

It's certainly a bit of a surprise but from the producer POV it basically just involves uploading content to Vimeo while from the consumer POV it's a no commitment way of viewing as much TM as you like whenever you feel like it. I'm pretty sure he/they will make a pile of money from this.

 

Sure, it would be kind of easier if it was just on Netflix, not least because there's currently no app for my TV, but I could see myself paying for this every now and then to catch bleeped versions that aren't elsewhere (to watch with our daughter) or to watch overseas versions that are otherwise a chore to obtain.

 

Wouldn't it be quite unusual as the creator(s) to retain rights to do this though? Considering how complicated media licensing usually ends up being, I'm equally surprised that they were able to put this together at all.

Having worked on SVOD platforms it would be relatively cheap to set-up too, as there’s no acquisitions costs, which is usually the biggest barrier to entering the market. On the tech side (less my forte) everything would likely be run by an established content delivery company.

 

They must have an even bigger archive of bloopers and outtakes too, and future seasons of TM could have the platform in mind with exclusive tasks or even mini-episodes with one-off guests. Would be super easy to editorialise too (so much so I wonder if Horne is doing it rather than hiring anyone)

 

So yeah, my initial skepticism has given way to thinking they could be onto something. Still, hope it doesn’t start a trend.

A good start to the series I thought. Chris is the competitive bloke in the Russell Howard mould and Ardal is the befuddled middle aged bloke who’s not annoying like Baddiel (yet) but a bit dull. I think I like Sophie best so far but I couldn’t tell you why.

 

All the tasks were good too, a nice mix of pure challenge (find the ducks) and creativity/lateral thinking (duel).

Loved the duck bit. Never seen Judi (only heard her on the radio) and no idea who Sophie is, but they’re fine. Ardal seems somewhat lost, which is great.

This series has definitely got the highest (expectations based on the contestants):(how good it is in reality) ratio. Tonight’s was another cracker, and the final task was a thing of insane genius.

I'm sure having the audience back in is the difference. Dancing at the taskmaster shouting "STOPCOCK" wouldn't have worked in an empty studio (and covid distance etc)

I've been trying to work out why Channel 4 gave a content warning about it being filmed prior to the war in Ukraine. Perhaps Ardal's emotional recreation of WWII, but it seems so tame. I expected some quickly aged jokes about Putin or something.

I liked the recent series but I'm really enjoying this one if only for the fact they've got a studio audience and there's no careful distancing for group tasks so it all feels much more alive. The best part of it though is confirmation that Ardal O'Hanlon is as delightful as I was hoping he'd be.

I'm really enjoying this series so far, there just seems to be something about the tasks that makes them more engaging?  Maybe it is the lack of social distancing but the interactions between Alex and the contestants in the tasks is frequently hilarious, and Alex's sarky comments are ace.  I guess it's probably always been like that, but it just seems to be working really well with this group.

I think it's because there are no star names here. No one you'd say was a solid A lister. So no one has to live up to a reputation or prove anything.
