Astro Bot - PSVR - best game of all time?

Anyone else notice the music is great, but essentially stolen. This isn't a criticism, genius steals. For example, the title music: You could sing the main verse of Queen's 'It's a kind of magic' over the top, and it would fit perfectly. :)

The whole game is stolen, Mario sunshine inspired main mechanic with coins and music lifted again from Mario - the weight of movement is a little floaty and I don’t think the platforming is anywhere near as good as top tier Mario but my word they have made and incredible game that really shows off VR - it’s about using VR to elevate what without VR is a very average game, as said under water is finally fun too play ( I’d argue Mario 64 underwater has better gameplay but I’d love to play that in VR)

I may be sounding negative but it feels like Nintendo’s first go at VR platforming and I don’t think there is any praise higher than that!

I think it's way better than Odyssey. So nyar.

Not a word of a lie, either. I only played the base game of Odyssey and chucked it 'before it gets good' apparently, but I'd already completed the game and seen the credits. I think I died twice or something the whole time, and only really felt it had done anything cool was during the song (you'll know which one) and the face punch boss.

It is interesting to ponder how Astro might be without VR, in much the same way that Binary Domain might be less enjoyable if it was an ASCII text adventure. You can't separate it.

Mario's not bulletproof, and every new entry has a lot to live up to. This had none, and utterly brutalized them with joy and aplomb.

Edit: Noob totally posted that nanoseconds before my reply.

Yes! The jet float mechanic reminds me of Mario Sunshine (something I loved).

Without that Astro Bot would be half the game it is. Those jets not only *feel* great but allow you to navigate the 3D, or should that be 4D space, with assurance.

Plus taking out enemies with the jets never gets old.

Started this on the weekend. Only had time to do the first 3 worlds but it's just a joy isn't it. I missed a few of the bots though so need to go back in a find them. I love the music, I found myself picking it up and humming along to it as I played.

Also, it can't just be me that talks back to the Bots right?

The basic riff is a chord progression, CEGEC, FACAF etc.  It's the same as BMX Flyer by Grandstand, and a million other simple riffs.

In exciting news, the composer Kenny Young has agreed to chat with me on DorkTunes about composing Astro Bot and more!!!

He was also behind some of the music in LittleBigPlanet, right? The Greek style acoustic number from the skipping challenge that speeds up was his if I recall.

I assumed he was Media Molecule staff so surprised he composed Astro Bot. It's a nice link with some of my favourite games though.

5-1 and 5-2 - oh my   5-2 makes me want

Spoiler

Luigi's Mansion

in VR

I got about 3/4 of the way through 5-3 and got stuck in a moving block and had to restart from the beginning as there is no restart from checkpoint without dying.  Oh well.

Got RDR2 for the wife today. Spent the afternoon installing it. Her night out tonight, rare night with the consoles and a sleeping baby.

Saw all the praise for RDR2. Played it for an hour. Remembered I bought Astrobot.

This, this is game of the fucking year.

It’s Nintendo quality.
