Star Trek: Lower Decks

Having introduced my 13-year-old son to Trek via Strange New Worlds, he was keen for more, so we moved onto Lower Decks. And he loves it. I thought it might be a bit heavy on the references but it really does work on two levels, it's a hilarious comedy space series in its own right even if you don't get all the jokes. And it barrels along at such a pace that even if something goes over your head, you're on to something else within seconds.

We're only a few episodes in but this is a big hit. And I'm enjoying the earlier episodes more than I remember doing at the time - in my mind, the series gets better over time but maybe it's just that you get into the groove after a while. Mariner in particular is one of the great all-time Trek characters.

Rewatched the last episode of season 1 last night - it's amazing how much stuff they pack into the 25 minutes runtime.

I mean they could have got an entire episode out of any of the following:

Spoiler

The Pakleds

Rutherford's malfunctioning implant

Peanut Hamper

Riker and Troi showing up

The reveal of Mariner's secret

but you can almost hear them going "fuck it" and just cramming the whole lot in there. And it actually works. Madness.

It's a shame this thread doesn't get more activity as this week's was genuinely fantastic.

Spoiler

The quality of the writing really shining now. It's still full of great gags but it's got some real heart and soul to it and understands how to write characters with actual humanity.

The Rutherford story was actually quite emotional too which I really wasn't expecting, and it's nice when a show surprises you like that.

The little side story was great too: as well as being funny it actually explores one of the genuine criticisms of how Star Fleet appears in modern Trek, with it coming across as a glorified Navy a lot of the time, at odds with the original vision of socialist utopia.

But of course Lower Decks is breezily exploring those questions through the medium of clever humour.

Really dig it!

Also, the Tamarian officer's line was so deadpan it caught me by surprise and I choked on my beer.

I thought you were done with new Trek?:D

Does this mean you're finally going to check out Strange New Worlds too? If nothing else it's somehow going to include a Lower Decks crossover episode in season 2.

This is great too though. I'm still watching each week.

Spoiler

I thought I could see where they were going with the Rutherford story, only for the obvious resolution being subverted with a single line. It adds a nice bit of mystery to his character too.

And yes, everything about the Mariner/Boimler story was great.

That's pure cutting your nose off to spite your face, which is a shame. SNW is like Paramount watched The Orville, panicked at how good it is and gave their new show heart, empathy, likeable (and identifiable) characters, and a generally optimistic view of the universe in response.

And I can't remember anyone whispering or spending most of an episode crying, either.

I'm not paying for Paramount+ just to watch one show.

I bought a grab-bag of Wotsits to get a code for a free month of Paramount + solely to watch SNW. It’s… Decently OK. Not amazing, not top tier Trek as many here think, but nowhere near offensively bad as Discovery and Picard, as in they’re barely comparable in quality.

Episode 5. I thought it was nice since they couldn't get the original voice actors, at least they didn't try to pretend they had and just go some randos.

It's really them. Everyone sounds so old and different

Spoiler

Armin Shimerman won't have had the false teeth in.

But my god, did I love seeing DS9 and that theme music playing. I'd forgotten they were doing an epsiode there so it was great when it popped up.

Loved how Morn was still sat at the bar as always.
