Spoiler

I'm not sure I'm keen on the idea that Mariner knows Quark for some reason. Feels like they're setting up small universe syndrome there for no good reason. Either drop that or the Shax/Kira thing.

But apart from that niggle and the slightly too much memberberries, they managed to create an episode that somehow felt like a classic Quark caper, so very enjoyable stuff! The old actors did a decent job too.

I should hope so considering it was actually them :P

A little joke I really liked was Rutherford making a comment about having a heart to heart on the promenade deck with a passing journalist.

It broke the fourth wall but not in a way where the character had to be aware of it.

It was a very brave choice to focus an entire episode on that particular character given their personality traits but it worked really, really well. I was surpised. Also gives them a plotline to use at some point in the future in they want to.

That was a fun one today. Lots of little nods, including

The expendable redshirt being called Stevens, which I’m hoping is a proper nod to the Eddie Izzard Trek sketch from about 30 years ago :)

He's a recurring character, in loads of episodes.

Spoiler

Lt. Commander Steve Stevens, the balding guy with the moustache who idolises Ransom.

That was decent, though

I always find Holodeck episodes can feel a bit slight in Star Trek, and this was no exception. But all the character stuff was great. And the guest star bit was surprisingly emotional. Good stuff.

I watched the whole thing - strangely watchable but I didn't laugh once* and found it utterly disposable. The poeple writing it and making it obviously know their Trek and it is made with reverence and love for Trek (not something you can say about Disco and Picard). And there are some good ideas here thrown into the mix... but I can't shake the feeling that it just isn't very good. It is weirdly less than the sum of its parts and I can't work out why.

The much vaunted finale did absolutely nothing for me at all. Episode 9 however was easily the best episode with a very clever framing device making it appear like the film versions of Star Trek with some clever audio cues.

All in all it felt like a low rent unfunny Futurama slathered in Star Trek clothes. The fact that this is the best Star Trek can now do is just depressing.

* ok I just remembered I did, once, when Q appeared and made one of his quips.

I watched Season 2 after someone reminded me it existed. I wondered if I hadn't given it a fair crack so I gave it another season. My opinion hasn't changed, it is faintly amusing and fairly entertaining but other than that meh.

The constant (and I mean constant) nods to TNG VOY DS9 etc just make me roll my eyes. Hey it's Riker teleport clone, hey it's Nausicaan's being lairy in a pool bar fight, Hey it is the Borg Baby drawer and then Boimler in a shot for shot borg picard reveal, Hey look it's a Tamarian he's gonna say "shaka when the walls fell" woohoo. If they did something interesting with the refererence, like maybe the Tamarian has a point in the plot then fine but they are basically used as "prop gags". The actual plots don't need them so it is just a nudge wink every. single. time.

It is entertaining enough and it is the best star trek around (I haven't seen Strange New Worlds as I need to pull the trigger on a free month of paramount+ when I have time to inhale all the startrek :D) if you ignore the Orville. When it drops the fan service pointless nods then there are some good ideas and stuff here. Episode 10 is great and has less of the nods. As a result it is a highpoint, in fact the overarching Pakled plot is pretty decent.

SO overall a 3 out of 5 for season 2. I will give season 3 a go when I have the energy for it.
