I think that's fair, although I definitely enjoy the nudge wink stuff more than you. I like that they're rarely obvious, and often developed just enough to highlight how absurd the concepts could be. They're rarely just "remember this?", and even when they are they're often the more unlikely stuff that I actually had forgotten.

I think "Riker Lean" training just gave me a hernia.

 

It's not so much just the joke itself, but that in the context of a crew working flat out ship-wide that was the most important task Ransom had for the command training :lol:

Also did I miss something, what episode were those insect versions of the Cerritos crew from?

 

I'm also happy they finally brought back that Vulcan character from ages ago. I remember thinking when they did that Vulcan/Klingon Lower Deckers episode that both characters surely had to turn up again at some point. It's just taken a bit longer.

Dr. Mixleemo (probably spelling that wrong) - he's the ship's counselor.

 

Why do I retain these things? I only watch an episode once, and his name is absolutely irrelevant to my life, but I can remember his name fine.

 

My co-worker, who I see in twice weekly meetings though? Nope. Not a clue right now. I'd have to look at the meeting invite to remember.

It's really well done, although in this case the episode also drew on storylines from at least two earlier episodes. 

 

What's also really well done is how the episodes could so often be genuinely excellent Star Trek episodes even without the humour. The finale was a perfect example.

It's not exactly serialised but it definitely draws on past episodes a lot more than it used to. The story about Rutherford's implant (presumably now resolved) has been running since season 1, Pakleds are a regular feature, and old characters come back all the time. That's in addition to the many, many callbacks to other Star Trek episodes and shows, of course.

 

It works on multiple levels. It's full of references for fans but it's also a great show in its own right whether you want decent sci-fi or just something funny. Both Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds are genuinely great Trek, but Lower Decks is the one I look forward to the most.
