Star Trek: Lower Decks

Season 2 Ep 2.

Some of the references got a tad repetitive in this one at times

Spoiler

It would have been nice if they hadn't reused too many lines from Darmok. We get it, it's a reference, but why not reference the spirit of the language from that episode by making all the new character's lines unique, rather than literally copying the ones from TNG

However:

Spoiler

Boimler's speech was great - and somehow feels like a bit of a fuck you to Picard and Discovery, intentionally or not, so I'm down with that.

I thought the same.

Spoiler

His conversation with the Lower Deckers at the end was the cherry on top, talking about life on the Titan being something like "heavily serialised adventures full of shootouts and last minute twists". I'm not it was a quite a "fuck you", but was certainly a recognition of how far from classic Trek the new shows are by comparison.

A fair amount of the jokes seemed a bit forced this week, and some of the dialogue ("girls trip!") got a little grating to be honest, however:

Spoiler

"Only a few people in the quadrant can say they've been beaten up by Tom Paris" was such a roundabout epic burn

that it pretty much made up for it.

This week's was honestly rubbish. Just meandered about, nothing made me laugh, and the obvious cat jokes are starting to get tiresome.

Spoiler

And the "power of math" line can fuck right off. Anything that references Discovery is stinky by association.

First one I didn’t bother with a rewatch.

I'm a bit concerned that there will be a drop in quality. The more successful it is, the more Kurtzman will want to be involved and it'll sink back to the earlier episodes of lazy gags and shouting that he signed off on before ignoring the silly cartoon.

Best episode so far I think, I was grinning all the way through. I really like Mariner and Boimler’s less antagonistic relationship this season. I want a Data bubble bath. And it had a higher than usual number of DS9 references. I’ve stopped thinking of this show as a spin-off now, it’s just great Star Trek.

I wouldn't go that far, but I enjoyed this one much more than last weeks. Don't really know what was going on with that one, as the jokes just weren't landing, but this week had some excellent gags and nice character moments. The Doopler was great - a very funny but still Trek-like idea.

This show's really found its feet in season 2. They've gone full TNG in that the conflict between the main characters has pretty much been removed: season 1 was all about Mariner vs Boimler, Mariner vs the Captain, Ransom vs Everyone etc, and Boimler was usually the butt of all the jokes - but in season 2 that's no longer the case, the Lower Deckers are all best buds, Boimler's neurotic but actually quite competent, and conflict is due to external factors. It's much, much better and the show really feels like proper Star Trek now.

I genuinely look forward to this every week. I won't be able to say the same about Discovery, when that returns.
