This is very good indeed - I think Star Wars desperately needed a fresh approach.

 

I have always maintained that there's plenty of scope for more Star Wars in the time frame spanning the 9 films IF it's done well.  If the writing is good, you're halfway there, but this also applies to the setting and the atmosphere.  I think it's already been successfully done in some of the novels, but this is the first time I've seen 'grown up Star Wars' on screen, and it's working brilliantly.

 

I know I'm in a minority here but I actually prefer the good parts of Obi Wan to this, but that doesn't mean I'm not really enjoying this (and FWIW I absolutely understand why people like this more than pretty much every other Star Wars screen outing) and I'm really pleased that Disney have introduced some proper variety!

 

Have to add: the cinematography, the sets, the interiors etc are absolutely first class - they've absolutely nailed it.

From a thematic point of view, Death Star components would make sense. The Imperial machine needs slave labour, and the Death Star represents the Empire at its most excessive and resource-hungry (though a fleet of thousands of Star Destroyers probably takes far more effort).

 

I was wondering again about the sheer number of prison guards who turned up for Andor's processing, and the guy who turned up late because another team was short-handed. I think maybe they're making a show of how many guards there are to make the prisoners feel threatened, when in reality there are probably a tiny amount of guards when compared to the prisoner population. They're reliant on the electric floor and psychological factors to keep them in check.

I thought it was more indicative of turnover - they have to deal with a lot of people coming and going, but once theyre 'in' they're mostly left to themselves.

 

Also re 'the component' - I thought I remembered them being stacked together, in which case wings or probes wouldnt make sense? Unless they just stack them for transportation.

 

It'll be one of those things where they've just invited speculation for its own sake, knowing what we're like, and then the payoff is that theyre actually totally irrelevant.

It works better if they never expand on it. They're just stuck for years in a windowless prison where the floor can kill you at any second, feverishly building endless reproductions of the same object that has no discernible use or importance.

Ideally it would never be revealed what they are building. I'd quite like it if they were building parts that powered the electric floors for other imperial prisons though. Something bleak as others have said...

Even better if they find out one of the other floors’ jobs is to remove all the bearings and things they’ve been putting in, and sending the newly empty frames back around to be worked on again. The assembly line is nothing more than a way to make them do something for 12 hours at a time, and the parts are not used for anything at all.

Yeah, that was my thought too! If the government summarily doubles all sentences and starts shipping millions more to prison, the first thing they'll need to do is build more prisons. I love that this show makes you think about how a galactic empire actually works.

It must be a recent change following the Aldhani crackdown.

 

The medic says “He’s lucky. He’ll pass peacefully, which is more than I can say for the rest of us. Another week like this and you’ll be begging for what he’s getting.” He knows, what the new policy is, he knows the prisoners will find out, he knows the guards will likely kill them all when they inevitably kick off over it.

 

However brutal it was, it’s getting worse.

 

I wonder whether its actually a Republic constructed prison complex that’s now falling apart under Imperial management management philosophy.

I also figured they were just building pointless widgets that would be taken to another prison to be dismantled, but that didn’t really fit with the idea of splitting the able bodied prisoners from the others.

Also, this week has established that the communications between levels is much more extensive than we might have though initially, if a bit slow. If they were pointlessly assembling then disassembling the same widgets theyd have probably realised by now, if only by chance.

 

But yes, probably irrelevant either way.

I was also until now expecting Ulaf to lose a finger or two, then this week with him getting 'short' I was expecting him to be released and then killed. Turns out neither.

 

In any case I still imagine he'll probably end up as food paste.

The confusion and denial as to what went on on floor 2. Andy Serkis' desperately clinging onto his hope in the system. The tense exchange with the medic obliterating that hope and replacing it with a final resolution to do what must be done. Just brilliantly put together. 

 

Just give the Gilroys Star Wars. Let them do whatever they like with it.
