Star Wars: Andor

Well that was..

Spoiler

An excellent wee Star Wars bit in space with pew pew and excitement! Skarsgard keeps on being awesome, with effortless aplomb.

What's quite interesting about the whole thing is that Andor seems almost on the edges. He was hardly in today's episode. Thing is he is kinda boring at times, so this is well judged.

It's a great ensemble piece and it's surprising how many character threads work well.

MM is immense, and you can feel her fear, how trapped she feels, and how 'sacrificing' her daughter to get out of it is an absolute disaster for her. That's a true horror amongst it all - a clever beat for parents who might not care as much about men in a prison.

Because, really, everyone here is in a prison. Even today we see Skarsgard's missis elude to that.

I'm also a fan of the Mothma dwelling. Notice it's supposed to be all fancy, yet it retains dirty outside windows and seems dated. A far cry from the episode 1 stuff where everything seemed shiny. It is details like that which makes this series more believable.

I've had a word with myself today. It was a difficult conversation, but I've both decided we're going to save up tomorrow's episode until next week and go out with a bang.

God speed until next week, Andor thread.

Just watch it today. Then watch it again next week. Sorted.

I think I'm a bit out of step with the opinions this week, as I thought the "best Star Wars-y" bit was shit. It had no urgency, no weight, no sense of immediacy. It was like watching a student film (but obviously it looked far better than that). I don't know why it was in the episode, unless it was to hammer home

Spoiler

the risks Luthen is taking and the increased Imperial presence everywhere

but we already know about that.

Maybe they felt they needed it to keep fans' interest, and the reviews I've read of the episode bring it up as a highlight too so if that was the intention I guess it's working. To me it felt utterly unnecessary and from a different (worse) show.

Other than that, I really enjoyed the episode, although plot wise it feels like:

Spoiler

It's going to memory hole the last few episodes, from Andor's point of view anyway.

After being in prison, Cassian goes straight back to Space Cleveleys, gets his gun and money, and is right back where he was before his stint in the clink. He doesn't seem to have changed in terms of his beliefs, so it's not like he's emerged a true believer in the rebellion. Feels like they just needed him out of the way for a while to progress other characters' stories before killing off his mother to get him back to Ferrix for the finale, along with Luthen's lot and the ISB (with Syril tagging along).

I hope not though, as that would be disappointingly conventional.

Spoiler

I liked it because it builds upon Luthen's character inasmuch as he's clearly incredibly cool under all sorts of pressure, and when most other folks would be shitting themselves in this position, he just calmly sorts things out and buggers off. Admittedly, I was also very taken with the rather beautiful scene of those missiles destroying the...satellite dish (I assume it's something to do with tracking, but who knows). I thought it looked wonderful.

Still packed with notable bits for me:

Spoiler

Sad dogbot.

Being 'bricked'.

The whole thing with Saw.

Stellans pimp ship being even more pimp than expected with its MetalStorm defenses and spinny shit. Makes me wonder if he isnt from a legit full-on republic spy background with Bond gear like that. Just needs a fancy wristwatch. Also....what was the thing he handed over to Saws guard?

Spoiler

It was a fancy club / truncheon that Saw’s guard attempted to confiscate, I think. Or a compact umbrella.

Spoiler

I am becoming increasingly convinced that Luthen will turn out to be a Gray Jedi or an ex-Jedi. His certainty that Andor needs to join the rebellion, the unbelievably complex network he seemingly manages on his own, his dual identities, his complete and utter self-certainty and assuredness in all situations. Then the speech from last weeks episode where he talks about using the tools of his enemies to defeat them. And in this episode Saw Gerrera's henchman takes what looks a hell of a lot like a lightsabre off him. Then he singlehandedly escapes a fucking Battlecruiser without even breaking a sweat. Got to be.

Been a certainty for me since day 1, I just hope it is handled well.

Spoiler

I mean, this week I realised his 'recharging station' even looks like a dogs bed, ffs. There's no way that's accidental. Stop playing with my heart SW!

Could be, hadnt considered that. Dunno if I'd be more or less excited for something that grandiose though.

Part of me wants it to come up in conversation, and he's just like 'yeah nah it's a holiday souvenir; I just like to fuck with peoples perceptions and let them fill in the blanks, lol'. Seems very luthen.

Oh, ALSO:

Spoiler

After cyril had the call from his old sgt and absconds to do fuck knows what....are we to take it that he basically facilitated this by stealing his moms space credit card? Because that's kinda how it looked. And I love the pathetic implications.

I love how this show has taken a part of the timeline and introduced new, interesting characters and planets as well as fleshing the whole thing out without any nodding, winking or 'sassy' quips. I really like The Mandalorian but I think this is the best Star Wars since the original trilogy.

I think the little space skirmish feels out of place only because it's so rare in this show. I did like the metaphor of Luthen's ship superficially being a juddery bucket, but actually packed full of secret and deadly tech.

It's the same idea as

Spoiler

the Falcon, but a different direction. That's a pile of scrap that is hot rodded to the point it can outrun anything. The haulcraft goes in the offensive direction instead, it's designed to fight its way out of trouble instead

Yuck, no thank you.

Spoiler

Not least because Grey Jedi is such a horrible misunderstanding of what the Force is

Also the whole point of this series is to be about little people, not the demigods responsible for fucking everything up in the first place

Spoiler

As badass as Luthen fucking up the interdictor type star Destroyer was  it felt a little too "Star Warsy" for a series  that despite the setting and name has eschewed  at lot of tropes of the franchise, still the overall quality has been so high that it doesn't detract from another excellent episode, Skarsgard  is so,so good in this again.

Can't wait to see the finale next week
