I'm going to try something in this thread: Every week I'm going to talk about a single eshop game a bit and see if it starts any conversatiins and maybe even sell you on the game in particular. I'm not going to go for the obvious (Hollow Knight/Into The Breach), but it'll probably be something you've heard of.

I've spoke about Voez a little bit in here before, because it's probably in my top 3 favourite games on the Switch (Along with Breath of the Wild and Hollow Knight is you were interested). It's a rhythm action game, with a mixture of instrumental, electronica and J-Pop tunes where you tap the screen in time to falling notes. It can be played with both the touchscreen only or the Joy-cons, but I strongly recommend the touchscreen. The Joy-cons make things far too easy and we're a definite afterthought. 

It's a very minimalist look, both in presentation and art style, but because of that, it never gets confusing what is going on in the game. And it's not easy. On the later difficulty levels, the lanes the notes fall down on dance across the screen, prompting you to react quickly to where you need to press. Hard mode will make you want to throw your Switch through the window. 

Massive kudos to Rayark for their continued support of the game as well. The game started with just over 100 songs on release. They've continually released additional songs at no extra cost (11 songs were added this week, which is what prompted me to post about it now) and it now totals 185. Which works out about 10p per song. 

There is a demo as well for those who want to try it. If you are tempted to buy, I would wait until next week now, just in case it shows up in the Black Friday sale. But it's great. It's beautiful. And it's one of the best rhythm games on the market. And I want more people talking about it.

I’ve got Voez but I don’t understand it. All the songs were unlocked immediately and as a result I don’t have any motivation to play because it doesn’t feel like I’m progressing. It’s like they forgot to put the game in. Someone please explain! Is it just about getting high scores?

It's about getting better. Find a song you like and the first time you play through it, you get a B rank, but you see the patterns in the notes so you try again. Next time you get an A rank and realise it you hadn't made that one stupid mistake you would have had a Full Combo....

And then you move up to Medium and wonder what the hell is going on.

But how do I know where to start? Am I supposed to pick a song at random and just get better at it? The game has no structure.

There is a story too but it’s weird how it’s unlocked, you unlock the start of the story by playing songs on easy, but I started on harder difficulties which unlocked later parts of the story so it made no sence.

 

i like voez, but never played it that much, probably due to Zelda.

I've played 99% on the song Butterfly. It's so pretty and I love the cascading charts for it. I can do pretty well on Hard now, too. I wish it had online high scores or something so I felt motivated to improve. I think it's a fantastic game but I don't like that much of the music. I feel the same about Deemo though that has better music and not as good gameplay or presentation.

I have Deemo, but have hardly touched it. I also bought Superbeat Xonic and Pianista. And I've hardly touched those either.

There's been another update for this today: another free 16 songs have been added taking the total to over 200.

I really enjoy the way this plays - a fancier, two-handed Ouendan, really - but the soundtrack is absolutely dire. I wish I'd known how bad the songs were before I bought it. I'd expected most of the music to be like the main theme and first song in the game. Unfortunately almost every song is like something off some super-high bpm, chipmunk vocal Happy Hardcore compilation from the 90s, except in Japanese.

That's similar to my feeling. I got it day one way back when and absolutely adore the song 'Butterfly', very pretty wistful Japanese kind of anime piano vibe, and then everything else is like mainlining Skittles, unfortunately. It's my probably the best rhythm game I've played in terms of mechanics and clear but gorgeous visual design. I can't stomach the music, though.

 

Deemo is a bit better, but the actual gameplay is a bit pedestrian in comparison. I'm still waiting for the ideal rhythm game, basically.

And I found it in Groove Coaster Wai Wai Party

 

VOEZ is on sale again on the eShop. I've come back to it recently, and captured my favourite song from the game, might give a flavour. Such a pretty piece in every respect
