Metroid: Zero Mission

he says it as if it's a good thing.

.::: Well isn't it? Let's look at my personal top 5;

1. ICO

2. Rez

3. Super Metroid

4. Secret of Mana

5. Kirby's Adventure

Well for me personal the choice seems obvious. Only SOM is the only game with a very long playtime and even that one is considered 'short' for RPGs in general.

To me shorter games aren't exactly 'wrong', don't get me wrong I like a 40+ RPG from time to time. But shorter games which capture imagination and run rampant with some ideas while still being enjoyable gain preference.

I'm also save in the knowledge that I can replay these games at just about every moment without having to give up halfway becasue it will take to long. Short games are good, as long as what they do is good as well.

The SA-X? That was bloody great, walking into a room and hearing it's footsteps, and hoping it doesn't come near you.

.::: Brilliant indeed, I was genuinely terrified when it appeared. Shame it was a bit underused in Fusion. The again we always have Prime's 'tidbit'.

I'm stuck on that bit in Fusion where you have to run away from it while super bombing several screens It's really hard and the savepoint is quite far away so it's a big chore that I can't put up with too much of

The walls are set up so the arc of your jump will take you through a few of 'em at a time, assuming you're stuck at that bit. I think there was a duck and roll bit too, don't remember.

So, I finished it, here's what I thought. SUPER SPOILERSSSSS!!!!!!!

What the hell??? Ridley was the biggest letdown, he didn't do anything but puke fire and then die, he's so easy. I did like the stealth bits where Samus loses her suit. But by the timeyou get your suit back and all the added snazzy weapons and things, the game is over! I'm expecting that you start off hard version with at least some equipment, otherwise they're absolutely no point in the 4 yellow doors on the map and even less point in the single block height arrows.... but even then the game is just started overnowhere new to test out the firepower, just the same old places but even easier..

I finished the game on something like 4:30 with 66% item pickup. the picture I got was of Samus in full suit. I'm assuming they're doing that thing where the quicker you complete the game, the less she is wearing :)

So did they think that Super Metroid was too hard and too long for today's kiddies and decided to dumb it down massively? That's all I can think, apart from the one time you have to multiple wall jump is vague and hard and not explained in any way, I guess that's where all the kids will get stuck..

Not really spoilertastic, but dont read if you want a virgin zero experience.

I have to agree with Julia, I finished the game in 2hrs 40 minutes with a 60% pickup rate without even breaking a sweat. Apart from the nice nes version of metroid and gallery I got it seemed too short.

When I got to the mother brain i was thinking, is this how short the original was, i dont rememeber that...

And what is the craic with the yellow doors? theres only about 5 of em...

Overall however, it wasnt a bad game could have been a bit longer.

Just wanted to quickly add this to the discussion:

Is this the first remake where technology has benefitted the game in more than just an aesthetic sense? Yes, Zero Mission is all prettified for todays demanding pre-pubescents, but that map function has totally changed the dynamic of the game. No longer must you memorise or manually map. No pointlessly huge leaps into the unknown, thanks to the clue giving Chozo Statues. No missing out on lovely secrets or wondering how much of the level you've actually completed.

To be honest, I'm enjoying it far more than Fusion, simply because of the nostalgia. How will they translate the next area from the NES original? Were the Chozo Ruins always there, but in an unrecognisable form? Wicked, wicked game.

Having played through the original NES version, I'm amazed at the amount of stuff that's actually been put in for the remake.

Me too. Oddly, I played the NES game on my NGage 2 weeks ago and have just got hold of this. So it was all fresh in my mind like.

So this linking with Metroid Fusion lark then... I'm just about to finish Fusion (don't ask) so is it correct for me to get a "connection error" due to it being incomplete. I'm trying to link the US / PAL versions so that's concievably what the problem is...

Zero completion: 3h 59m and 67%

.::: I've linked my PAL Fusion with NTSC ZM. Worked fine. Just be sure the ZM GBA is the master (small link-plug) and the slave Fusion GBA in in wait-mode (turn GBA on while holding start & select).

Other than that you'll have to complete it I think. ;)

Currently playing Hard Mode. And it is indeed suitably Hard. ;) Halved energy tanks and such. Goodie. ;)

My first run was 3:02 with 64% btw.

I think there were approximately 4 reasons why it didn't work then! Is this a case of Nintendo accepting that we are going to import and giving us the bonus anyway or were they just too lazy to block the inter-region linking? I know that Prime / Fusion linked up okay with different regions.

Discuss. Or not.

.::: ;)

Well at least now you know. ;)

Just taken out Kraid in Hard. Ironically he was even easier than the first time we met. (O_o) I do like the overal upped difficulty. Really makes exploring a lot more challenging.

As a side note;

*SPOILER*

HOW do you get the Super Missile tank in a left alcove of the main Brinstar-shaft? I can see the route getting there; you need to get to the right corridor leading to Norfair, than charge up running left, go through door, set speed charge there, run back through door, there open the door again but walk down the slope, change to morph ball, jump, use dash-charge left, and away we go.

BUT WHY DOES THE CHARGE STOP THE MOMENT I GET INTO THE MAIN SHAFT AGAIN!? Aargh, it's the only way to get there... What am I missing?

*END*

Well, I got it this weekend and finished my 1st run through last night.

Nothing but postitives from me, I'm afraid. I absolutely love it.

It has the "feel" that was missing from Fusion; the combination of planet surface, caves, labs and spaceship. It's much less linear: I felt as if I was sequence-breaking for half of the game, only to realise later that I wasn't.

Really great.

Any complaints of short complete time are moot. It's Metroid. Short & Sweet is much, much better than bloated & padded. I'm chomping at the bit to go back and try for 100%

The bit when you get your suit back and the even more awesome theme kicks in as you fly all over the mother ship twatting fuck out of Space Pirates is one of gamings Greatest Moments.

just playing this again on WiiU before going to play Samus Returns on 3DS

Classic.

Also this is an absolutely fantastic game. Wasn't there a rumour that Nintendo was working on a brand new 2D Metroid? Or did I dream that

.::: It's a permanent rumour. It never disappears. It just came into being somewhere after Super Metroid and... stuck. It came true once though. (Gods, that's depressing to write down.)
