Late to the party, with the Blu-rays; just watching footage of the concert.

Really enjoyed watching the band hanging out, but bloody hell, the whole project was a bit half-arsed, wasn't it? Whole bunch of ideas that ended up with a last-minute decision to just go play on the roof of Apple HQ.

Surprises? Just how much I liked Lennon; how diffident Harrison seemed - and how much they ignored him. Ringo also said surprisingly little - while being right on the beat as soon as anyone started up. And Yoko broke up the Beatles by being quietly devoted to Lennon? Right.

Nice to be reminded just how good they were, too.

Don't forget Billy Preston bursting in like unexpected sunlight on a gloomy day.

Yeah, and the dude had some stone cold chops.

It was clearly fated - they set up the new Fender electric piano, the Beatles noodled on it a bit and complained they really needed a fifth Beatle to play it to get the live feel they wanted, then he drops in unexpectedly for a TV show and basically kicks the whole band up a level.

George invited him I believe but didn't make a big thing of it to as not create an expectation or whatever. I watched something about it last week funnily enough.

It did seem a little too pat, but good on George, if he did; it really affected the group dynamic for the better. Maybe he was a reminder of their earlier days, or something.

Weird to think of the bad blood between John and Paul in the 70s; they seemed to be almost telepathic in this.

I’ve checked and numerous sites mention it, here’s one:

During his break from the group, Harrison caught a performance by Ray Charles in London. On the stage that night was Preston, whom Harrison and his fellow Beatles had befriended during their years in Hamburg. Excited to see his old pal, Harrison sent Preston a message inviting him to join the Beatles in the studio.

This wasn’t the first time a non-Beatle had joined the Fabs' ranks. Harrison had used the same method during the contentious White Album sessions, having Eric Clapton join the group for “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

“It’s interesting to see how nicely people behave when you bring a guest in, because they don’t want everybody to know they’re so bitchy,” Harrison explained in the book The Beatles: Anthology. "Suddenly everybody’s on their best behavior.” Preston arrived at Apple studios on Jan. 22, just as the Beatles were working on their song “Get Back.” After being welcomed by the group, the keyboardist was quickly invited to contribute.
