I think the last Tomb Raider with Alicia Vikander had the same problem - people were like, I've seen that and didn't particularly enjoy it.

I'd also like to see Robbie not endlessly stuck doing Quinn forever. She's a good actress.

I don't think Margo Robbie hates doing the role though...

Quote

And Robbie is indeed ready to don Harley's signature pigtails again sooner rather than later, despite recent headlines that she needed a break from playing the character. "No, I've had enough of a break. I'm ready to do her again," she said. "I did Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad back-to-back, so that was a lot of Harley all in a one year period, but that was a while ago now. I'm always ready for more Harley!"

Deadline have a write-up on how it did numbers wise, and it seems to have massively under-performed. Taking less than the first film and Birds of Prey.

Like, I get why you'd compare the two but we're also in a totally different landscape film wise.

This was shit. Polkadot Man stuff was funny though.

It's not often we're in complete agreement, but come on, this film was terrible, like all of DC's stuff few witty one liners to try and lighten the fact they made a 2 hour snuff movie that's like 'murder porn with superheroes'

Fuck me. with hyperbole like that you should phone the Daily Mail and start doing their headlines.

I think he means tonally, rather than there is literally a giant shark tearing real people in half.

I also could've done without the violence, which was papering over a meandering script, terrible plot, some amazingly bad accents (Capaldi's performance in this is an all-timer) and more sagging sections than a badly maintained coastal path footbridge.

Idris managed to play Idris well enough. Cena was vaguely amusing. Rat woman was so devoid of anything not sure why she was there. Polka dot man was just odd for oddness' sake. Shark was fine, even if it was trying a bit hard. Nathan Fillion might've lifted the entire thing but he was relegated to an unfunny bit part. It had its moments (even if it was self-aware that it was trying to create a moment) and it wasn't as bad as most of the DC stuff, but it still wasn't great. And it does suffer a bit for The Boys comparison as that does what it does a lot better in the R-rated sphere and Guardians does what it does better in the PG one.

Loved it. I thought it was 2 hours of just complete and utter daft fun. Plenty of stuff to scratch that action itch, plenty to laugh at.

Good old Rllmuk. Managing to pull the fun out of everything since 2001!

Rllmuk: not just reflexively liking stuff and applying justified critique to underwhelming media products since 2001!

I hope you used oven gloves, handling that hot take.

Oh I don't know that doesn't seem to far from the norm here.

Here's this thing I love and thought was great.

"Fuck you, ya loon it's shite and here's why you are wrong and an idiot"

I of course never stoop that low when it comes to shit I don't like

Spoiler

Never check any of my posts regarding Zack Snyder movies.

Not to mention, neither of those were launched in a pandemic or available for home streaming/piracy a week later.

Nothing is going to perform well this year which is terrible news for Dune Part 2.

It's mad to me that they thought just bunging a The on the front would be enough to differentiate it from its predecessor for the general public. I,ve seen that done with other properties when they bring them back, but at least then there's usually decades between instalments not 5 years.

The other thing they do to signify a fresh start/revival is to take a character previously known by their surname, and use their full name as the title. At some point we're going to get a 007 movie called simply "James Bond", aren't we?

Maybe we'll eventually see series combining both methods: The Logan, The Jason Bourne, The Rocky Balboa...

I...liked it I...think. I haven't seen the first one and am just not in the mood for this type of film anymore. I'm not sure that will change and i was curious about the reaction to it.. It's not too dissimilar in tone to Deadpool 2 which i (maybe inexplicably) loved and thinking back i can't say that offered so much more than this. I'm not really in tune with Gunn's sense of humour but I found all the stuff with the weasel funny, and the casual nature of a lot of the deaths (like the rapid stabbing of someone sleeping) irreverent and sharp if not actually laugh out loud funny (which nothing usually is). The part about Wilson. Idris arguing with his daughter about stealing. Polkadot man's visions of his mum. Shark added a lot to that big dumb indestructible Hulk character. Idris was great and all the stuff in the comms room with Viola Davis being a menacing villain was good. (I learnt after that she was in the first film. That surprised me, it seemed her character and those scenes were new to this film).

Just generally I think it's the overbearing music, especially watching with earphones that lets these films down. That and half way through as Harley Quinn was murdering some people i did think..what is this film about again.

I'm not sure what the horrible washed out over exposed cinematography was about either. It's a film where after watching it i have no idea on what the response from other people is likely to be.

Birds Of Prey was similar, i liked parts of it, its attempt at being energetic but was never really into it.

It's a weird thing this, I liked it in parts but I'm so tired of the "Whedon approach" (to stories, not how he physically approaches women according to reports). Not every emotional scene needs a daft "witty" buffy-esque exchange shoehorned into it. There are other tropes too, like

Spoiler

]PDM's abrupt death

that one in particular irking me. Not 'cause I gave a shit about the character, but just because it's the kind of thing I've seen so many times before.

That stuff also clashed pretty badly with the

Spoiler

Harley torture scene

too, which felt like it was written by someone else entirely.

Oh and also, yeah, okay,

Spoiler

Idris made friends with the rat at the end but where was the bit where Idris is held at gunpoint or something and the rat saves him

like it was clearly leading up to?

Anyway, yes, I'm not tearing it apart, I did enjoy it. The rat was best character though. Idris won me over after three years of Sky Go adverts being shoved through my brain whenever visiting family, and Cena was surprisingly good in both comedy and serious parts. Harley as always is great but I think it's time to make her less ditzy now. Said it before, I'll say it again: Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman is retroactively the best Harley adaptation.

BTW what's the point of Verhoevenning all the gore if you're just gonna CGI it?

I found the movie a lot of fun.

@Loik V credern - Yeah, Deadpool 2 came to mind as my big point of comparison too. Though I don't think any of the big killing sprees/death montages in TSS quite matched that movie's X-Force scene.

Structure:

Spoiler

Birds of Prey used a nonlinear structure in its first half, because it was presented as Harley telling the story. But I'm not sure whether TSS gained much from doing the same thing.

The initial "three days earlier" flashback was there for obvious reasons (delaying the reveal of the second squad). But I'm not sure what the later "eight minutes earlier" bomb-planting scene gained from being presented as a flashback, as opposed to intercutting between the two groups. Maybe it was too much of a tonal clash to go directly from King Shark playing with those cute Ponyo fish, to shots of the Starro test subjects in agony?

Characters:

Spoiler

Well if Marvel isn't going to give us a live-action Squirrel Girl any time soon, at least we have Ratcatcher 2 to tide us over!

Spoiler

I've seen a few comments elsewhere that "Harley's subplot" in the middle of the film added nothing and was only there because she's the star actress and character. I disagree: the scene where she shoots the ruler who proposed to marry her, and she gives the monologue about watching out for red flags in her relationships, was a great depiction of post-Joker Harley. One of my favourite bits of dialogue in the film, and probably the closest that the DCEU Harley has come to the version from the current animated series.

Final scene:

Spoiler

Anyone else think Weasel was going to look up at the Moon and howl, in a callback to the werewolf joke?

I totally expected some debris to fall from the sky and splat 'em, so that was a nice surprise. ;)

I watched this again yesterday, I can’t get over how good it is. It’s so economical with its character work, and so many scenes are giving us three or four character beats at the same time. It’s easily the best DCEU movie, probably one of the best comic book movies I’ve ever seen. A solid 9/10.
