I want to buy it and Granius V but I cancelled all my order for games and DVDs (apart from Winning Eleven 7 International in a fortnight) as I don't want to spend my money on new games until I know what happening with my job and I am planning to bulid a new PC or maybe go to Australia but not sure yet.

Still if I lose my job I will have so many games to play with plenty of time.

There have been murmerings that the US/EUR release of this game has elements (ie - ships) missing that were in the JPN original. Anyone clarify this?

as far as i've heard its only the US version that has missing ships.

to be honest it could do with losing a few ships.. as mentioned, most are the same ship tarted up with *slightly* differing weapons that make little or no difference. some are utterly useless.

  • 4 months later...

Well, I've belatedly gotten this, and after the initial let-down (level 1 is a bit boring, but you can use it to charge the force up) I really really like it.

Level 2 punchbag boss is whipping me at the minute... (on human difficulty).

Even level 1 becomes a bugger on the higher difficulty levels. Still, it's lush, but check out Gamefaqs at some point is my advice, because there's a crapload of stuff going on that the game and manual don't explain in any way... Maybe they're obvious to diehard R-Typers, I don't know. Spent ages wondering how I could get back to the 'original' level two...

That 'punchbag' will topple like a lone domino when you get a few more ships...

Closing Comments

Fans of the original SNES version from all over unanimously state that the conversion to the GBA is far from a faithful one. For a newbie to the design like myself, a few minutes into the game it doesn't seem all that bad. But after repeating a level from the beginning after ten minutes of success, only to have the ship explode without hitting a hazard, the game's problems start to grate on the nerves. It looks great, absolutely. But the level design and collision detection, as well a sluggish pace and poor use of background music...well, it all adds up. R-Type III is, simply put, a bad Game Boy Advance game.

5.0 Presentation

Straightforward, old-school style shooter. Passwords instead of battery save, which means no high score recording.

7.0 Graphics

Not overwhelming in looks, but there are some "ooh neat" effects tossed in to keep things interesting.

4.0 Sound

The old-school anime-style metallic sound effects come through pretty nicely, but overall the sound quality is a dud. Background music especially...it's muddies and bland.

4.0 Gameplay

Slow, dull action with poor collision detection that hurts the gameplay more and more as the levels go on.

2.0 Lasting Appeal

There aren't that many levels, and there's nothing here encouraging anyone to play through the rounds again and again.

4.5 OVERALL:

(out of 10 / not an average)
