The PAL version is now £17.99 at Play.com. Is it worth that? Or are there better shooters available on the PlayStation 2?

Psyvariar absolutely blows it the fuck away. Final is pap, let's face FAX, people.

Well, I got it for £14.99 in HMV, and I think it's fan-bloody tastic. Great atmosphere, amazing set pieces, no ridiculous Mars Matrix style screen full of bullets. In short, exactly what R-Type should be.

Level 3 is blowing me away. Literally, at the moment. As someone said earlier in the thread, the bit where you're looking down watching the chunks you've destroyed crashing onto the streets is just brilliant.

Off to Gamefaqs now, to find out more about it.

I haven't had the chance to play this much what with me being very silly and buying in extreme proximity to this:

Psyvariar

ESPGaluda

DoDonPachi Dai ou Jou

Amplitude

Klonoa 2

Ico

I'll get round to it someday :o

I know.

Amplitude is good for 2 things too:

Keeping the reflexes sharp, and keeping the girlfriend happy!

Aah, but can you compare Amplitude and Frequency? I can, and I claim that Frequency > Amplitude. In fact, Frequency > R Type Final, and Frequency > an unopened copy of Psyvaria sitting in my cupboard. I hope that clears things up a little.

I liked R-Type final on my R Type night a few weeks ago (first level seemed a bit dull), but I enjoyed I and III the most. Yet to try Delta.

I know. But Amplitude is not that much inferior, and me and the missus rinsed Frequency when we should have been doing our dissertations. And Gitaroo Man. It's amazing how you'll make any excuse to do anything else BUT your dissertation.

Actually, no it isn't :o

cons:

some of the ships are useless.

slows down like a bastard A LOT of the time.

Slow down in shooters such as Rtype and gradius are a gameplay necessaty not a negative point any shmup fan can tell you that.

If the slowdown is consistent, then it CAN be welcome, but if the framerate is skipping around like a quark, it's less pleasing.

due to the linear nature of most 2D shooters there are points where the frame rate will slow down these tend to be when there are loads of bullets on screen therefore the slow down helps theplayers avoid the bullets.

It's nowt to do with the linear nature, it's just that there are too many sprites onscreen.

I think what he meant was that due to the linear predictable path the game takes you know when there are going to be too many things on screen because it will be at the same place every time.
