RType Final

I think what he meant was that due to the linear predictable path the game takes you know when there are going to be too many things on screen because it will be at the same place every time.

indeed this is what I meant.

If the slowdown is consistent, then it CAN be welcome, but if the framerate is skipping around like a quark, it's less pleasing.

Espgaluda. Final Boss, first form. The only disappointment in the game for me. It's really, really off-putting.

Kakusei is what the intentional slow mode that you can go into in ESPGaluda that forms the game's scoring mechanic!

Why do two only vaguely connected things have to use the same made up Japanese word, they just want to confuse me. :o

It's ace. Sadly, you can't get a good game against computer AI, so I never play it.

What you need is the KGS client, then you can play against real people.

I'm really rather rubbish at go, which is a bit embarrassing as I share a house with a 1 kyu and an amateur 1 dan.

If you have a chipped PS2, thare's a Japanese PS2 Go Game that the bloke from the Go scociety I met says is half decent (he knew the programmer). I think it may have tied in with a Go anime he was showing me, I can't remember.

Could you have screamed "GEEK!" any louder?

I was humouring him. Nice bloke. I was at the Museum of Childhood, he was doing a talk and had brought all this stuff, and all the kids were just running around throwing soft toys at each other. He looked upset. Besides, Go is cool. When I was learning with my mate, we used to take our lovely Go board down to the local bohemian cafe and girls used to look at us like we were mysterious and cool. I think.

Well, on Cacky's recommendation, I've invested in R-Type Delta. Now, I'm about as far from being an expert on this genre as its possible to be and still be able to operate a joystick, so you should treat what I have to say with caution, but it seems to be very good indeed. In fact, I would venture to say that on first impressions it's better than Final: the first level in particular seems packed with much more incident and excitement. And it still looks fantastic: the visuals have barely dated, even though it's a PS1 game.

Incidentally, Final / Delta players: how much do you use the shoulder buttons to change your ship speed? I'm forgoing this option at present to use my arcade stick, but I'll switch back to the dual shock if I need those shoulder buttons.

The level design in Delta is very good and the later levels are almost inspired in their organic intricacy. As for the shoulder buttons, I used them a fair bit (though normally in preparation for a section rather than in the thick of combat). The music is class too.

I only ever slow down for the first and third end of level bosses. It makes it slightly easier to avoid crashing but I don't use it anywhere else, it slows down enough as it is.

I'm a bit late with this, but nevermind. After 1 hour, FINAL is shite. After 2 hours, FINAL is frustrating. After 3, and for every moment thereafter, FINAL is truly accomplished.

I'm hardly a shmup fanboy or anything so feel free to ignore any comparisons I make, but playing R-TYPE final feels as frustrating, rewarding and exciting as Alien Soldier, Ranger X and Cybernator all those years ago. Basically, it's feels old school. And it's one of the first games I've played to really blend the designs of the old with the flair of the new.

Or something. It's not as immediately gratifying as Psyvariar and doesn't really do an awful lot new, but it's been yonks since a game so seemingly bad has kept me coming back for more, cursing the computer AI and mumbling "This time....this time..."

Jobs a good'n, aw reckon'.

Just seen it being advertised on Amazon for £24.99

Anyone seen it cheaper, and does anyone have the Jap version ? I've played the recent demo and loved it. Just wondered what you guys on the board think of it ?

I got it from here, but its currently sold out

Mightg be worth keeping an eye on it, unless you are desperate for it now. It is ace though.

I feel R-Type Final's atmosphere, while very nice indeed, hurts the game overall. It's just not very exciting for a shooter, even though the pace of this series has always been a tad slower than the rest. On the other hand, I love it purely because it does something interesting with the genre...

How does everyone feel about the level with the couple getting it on in silhouette and the crazy walls of pufferfish? Looked like a they'd lost the last level by mistake and slotted in some flash game made by a pretentious media studies student. Bizzare.
