How much do you think video gaming has cost you?

I was looking at my collection last night, and tried to put a price oon how much I have spent on my consoles and games...I, as you do, casually rounded up and came up with a figure of £2,000. But when my missus came home she made my itemise every single item, like spare joypads and mem cards, scart leads, games I had part exed and lost money etc.

Suffice to say, my £2,000 seemed very optimistic, as I nudged my way past £3,000.

My collection consists of a GC, PS2, N64, SNES, MD and GBA, with around 20-30 games on each system, I hardly play any of them bar PES3, but just like knowing they are there if I choose. And considering its my hobby I am quite pleased that £3,000 has bought me all of the games from the past and present that I love playing.

But if you were being really realistic, how much would you say you have spent on gaming over the years?

23 years of gaming. Owned everything from a Spectrum to an Xbox and at least 3 PC's.

I would guess too much money for me to comfortably contemplate. Suffice to say that I once calculated my DC collection and peripherals alone to have cost somewhere around £2,300.

I couldn't work out the total, but I had about 40 n64 games which if you average at £30 a game, that's £1200.

I then have my PC games. Easily about 50 of them, so with an average of about £20, say, another £1000.

Plus, if you consider the computers themselves, bought primarily for gaming, the first one set me back about £800 and the one that I have now about £700.

All in all, about £3700. Ouch.

EDIT: shit, forgot the 'cube. bought 10 games for that at about £30 a time, so that's a rough guess of about £4000. Maybe £4100 with my DC and SNES stuff.

Come on you lot that don't want to think about it...its invigorating.

I knew I had spent alot, so just rounded down wherever possible, as it sounds everyone else does, but when I actually came up with a truthful, realsitic figure it weren't so bad.

Unless you are a complete gaming completist...what could your collection have bought you otherwise...a Citreon Saxo!!??

Come on lets play some hardball....or something similar

I find it very hard to either chuck or sell anything.

Me too. My mother was talking about giving away my N64 to a charity shop. I first thought she was taking the piss, so I giggled nervously. Then I realised she was serious, so threatened her with bodily harm if she ever said anything like that again.

My parents would know better than to chuck anything I've left in their loft. At least I hope they would.

Better speak to them now.

I have being gaming since the first Atari console hit these shores (before that scrounging around in arcades).

Have owned nearly every console since then and most computers Spectrum, C64, ST, Amiga, 2 PC's.

Without doing a accurate tot up but I would be amazed If I had any change out of £30,000 and in all honesty I reckon it could be a bit higher than that  .

I am thinking about moving house and I chucked all my currently non-playing gaming stuff in a double wardrobe (Dreamcast, N64, Saturn, Super famicom etc). It nearly filled it up to the top and I still have a load left in the garage.

Frightening, but I have spent a lot on beer also, so it my life has not been a waste after all.

But has it been a waste? no I don't think so. I have had 25 years of pleasure for the cost of a new car which does not seem so bad after all. If I am honest I don't begrudge or regret a penny of it either.

In your face non renters!

I've calculated about £3300 all in over the past 25 years. Not including arcades, but I think I've managed to calculate every game/system I've bought (no, really, I've got a good memory for such things)

My ZX81/ZX Spectrum was paid for by my folks so I don't count them, and I pretty much trade all my games in when I finished them (so I calculated all the games I bought, and knocked 20 quid off each, apart from the ones still on my shelves - the classics). Obviously Speccy games were around £5 on average, or free on C90's.

Pretty much my entire games collection for the past 10 years has had its cost split between me and my buddy as well, so that's halved the cost.

If I added the amount of 'rentals' I've done, then the figure would be much higher, but I can't recall every game I've rented, nor the enormous amount of 10p/50ps I slamed into arcade machines.

Let's say another grand or so.

That's not bad going is it?
