Anyone here a fan of Story of Thor (2?)

Its a game that passed me by back in the day, but the big chunky sprites look decent. Worth trying to pick up?

Also, should I play the Megadrive one first or does it not matter?

I've not played it, but it's apparently decent fun.

I've no idea what it sells for nowadays, though.

Just completed Decathlete and the first disc of Panzer Dragoon Saga. There's a lot more random battles than I remember. Luckily the combat engine is superb, so I really don't mind.

I just remembered I have the first disk of Panzer Dragoon Saga...did they give it away as a demo?

Selling the real deal is my biggest gaming regret.

Yes, it was given away as a demo.

I too regret selling my original :(

Was reading up online and found out there was a full English patch for Policenauts on the Saturn

So a bit of messing around and BAM got the patch installed on the ISOs.

Just did the prologue.

A lot of people enjoy MGS for the 20min cutscenes, myself included, and so far this has been a giant interactive cutscene, the scenes are super detailed with a tonne of information. This point and click style suits Kojima’s story telling, looking forward to expanding on the story as it’s already set an interesting scenario.

My favourite era in gaming and as a kid who'd grown up with MS and MD the Saturn was the console for me.

I was obsessed with the brochures. Pouring over Pebble Beach, Bug, Clockwork Knight  – games I didn't even want or like! Going through the exciting system spec – VDp1, VDP2 – it sounded so exotic! Trying to find an angle to convince my parents to get me one..

I didn't get one until 1996 after lots of saving up from my paper round.. but that was perfect timing - VF2, Sega Rally just released, NiGHTS not too far away, amazing unexpected classics like Exhumed, the brilliant, ground breaking release of Tomb Raider (which we got first!), definitive versions of Street Fighter, the untouchable art direction and battle system of Panzer Saga, and the magic and heart of Burning Rangers. And, of course, there was simply that bit of magic that comes with being the underdog system, playing brilliant games that most people didn't get to experience.

The first game I owned was, oddly, Virtua Racing. My Dad absolutely loved it, so eventually I had no choice but to trade it in – he was monopolising my system! I'd find him in my bedroom when I got home, playing.. I wish I'd hadn't traded it. It's the only game he's ever bothered with.

I watched that stupid space craft whilst listening to CDs for an unreasonable amount of time.

I was the only kid I knew in school with a Saturn. There were around 100 in my school year – nobody else owned one, or was remotely interested in mine.

Despite that strange fact, we were lucky in the UK to enjoy the support of Sega Europe, giving the Saturn a chance to live on in the fringes until 1998 where it might've died by early 97.

And yes, can't ever discuss Saturn without mentioning the championing of SSM and to give them their credit, Sega/Saturn Power.

Those guys managed to keep the enthusiasm alive with Sega fans right up to the launch of the DC, which was no mean feat. They opened the eyes of many to the import market, for which I thank them – I only started importing toward the end of the Saturn's run, but was lucky to get hold of Radiant Silvergun, Garegga, Souky, Silhouette Mirage, Anarchy & DOA, amongst others. It paved the way for my Dreamcast days. My favourite import of the time was probably JSR.. but that's another thread.

It's hard to pick my favourite Saturn game, because there were so many that were just brilliant and so different to anything on other systems before or since.

When I last valued my collection I put it at about £1300 - that was in 2006-ish, before it all went crazy. I would dread to think what I'd have to spend to get it back... yep, sold it all, piece by piece – for doubtless much less than £1300!

The only annoying thing here is certain Japanese games don't work. I think OutRun is one if I remember.

I do love all the Saturn variants. Not enough to collect them all mind :P

It's only the first revision of OutRun that doesn't work the reprint version works fine, Satakore list the CD Matrix number you need to look out for: https://www.satakore.com/sega-saturn-game,,GS-9110,,OutRun-JPN.html

Same goes for the Japanese release of Space Harrier: https://www.satakore.com/sega-saturn-game,,GS-9108,,Space-Harrier-JPN.html

Avoid and I mean avoid the western release of these games in the form of Sega Ages Vol 1, Sega of Europe butchered all three games included in that release.

Saturn blows the Dreamcast library of games out of the water in most areas, so many great games to buy.

One must have for Saturn Virtua Cop:

And one to avoid on system:

Policenauts is amazing. Meryl! The Sax riff! The setting, story, light gun sections and trademark Kojima-style "interactions" with pretty much any female character......

I've seen a few reproductions of that and have been tempted to pick it up.

I do love the look of it. Is it related to Snatcher at all?

Policenauts is great! I need to setup the language patch on my Saturn that plays backups (hey I've got a regular grey one too and plenty games!). I played through the 3DO version when it came out in Japanese just trying to get through the menus.

I really like the shooting sections on the Saturn, really nice that you can use the light guns.

Love the Saturn, I always roll this story out but I still remember going to Another World in Nottingham and picking up Radiant Silvergun (the only thing I knew about it was that Treasure made it) and Marvel Vs Streetfighter. Had them ever since.

Favourite machine of mine, so much arcade gold on there if you like that kind of thing :)

No relation I believe, just another interactive adventure.

Snatcher is great too, but I don't think that has a language patch on the Saturn yet, I think the Mega CD version is the best option

This is the best place for Saturn mods, accessories and things like Action Replay carts which are a must if you won't to run CD-R's.

Damn you strider. I was perfectly happy starting with a CDi collection but now I'm seriously considering getting into the Saturn again! I haven't owned a modded system since 2009 so been a long time

I too muddled through the 3DO version in Japanese (also have the Pilot Disk and also a load of Japanese Trading Cards somewhere for both Snatcher and Policenauts). Ah happy days!

Was such a shame it never got localised back in the day (there are rumours that it was 90% done - Jeremy Blaustein involved again I believe)

On a tangent but related to 3DO and Saturn I was always disappointed that Killing Time quietly got cancelled. Really enjoyed it on 3DO and the thought of an enhanced port on Saturn was quite enticing back in the day.

I sold my copy of Radiant years ago, still got my Capcom 4mb games. Xmen vs SF, marvel , sf zero 3 . Are they worth anything ?

If you've got a boxed version of Zero with the Ram cart you're looking at close to £200.

A boxed completed Xmen Vs SF is around £40-£50.

Why's Zero 3 so expensive? Is it based off a different arcade revision to the other home console ports?

I think it was quite late. I had a copy once upon a go. Sold it for £40 I believe.

I'm tempted to buy it again as I remembered it had a lot of cool modes on it.

So what Jap games would people recommend? Beyond the obvious with Radiant Silvergun.

Capcom Generation 2 (Ghosts n Goblins, Ghouls n Ghosts, Super Ghouls n Ghosts), Streetfighter Collection (SSF2X and SFZ2'), Outrun, Kuuga/Wolf Fang SS, Power Drift, Silhouette Mirage, Dynamite Cop/Die Hard Arcade, Darius Gaiden, Night Striker, Chase HQ, Elevator Action Returns, Bubble Symphony, Policenauts, Marvel Vs Street fighter, X-Men Vs Street fighter, Vampire Saviour, Layer Section.

SFZero 3 is a very good conversion with the 4mb cart and I 'think' it might be based on the later arcade versions. Dramatic Battle is a great 2 Vs 1 coop mode campaign. Not sure if other versions had that. Over time I've enjoyed playing Zero 2' more.

And yes Radiant Silvergun is essential, Saturn Mode is superb.

Everything merrychan has mentioned.

I'd also add Panzer Dragon 1 and 2, Virtua Cop 2, Battle Garegga, Hyper Duel, Sexy Parodius, Kingdom Grand Prix, Sega Rally, Virtua Fighter 2, Fighter's Megamix, Decathlete as well.

Some of those can be had for a fiver, some of those will make you weep.

It's a pretty good Zelda clone, which has a bit more to the fighting and swaps elemental spirits for the usual gear/weapons that Zelda uses..

The level design isn't quite as good as Zelda (a lot of blind leaps IIRC) and foreground objects can make areas confusing due to the perspective.

I never finished it - got completely stuck.. and this was back in the day and it was fairly obscure.. so never found a solution.

It's quite a nice looking game (it varies up some enemies by scaling them to different sizes) and I was enjoying it up to where I got stuck.

The music is by Yuzo Koshiro, but it's not one of his best, being mostly ambient and pretty forgettable TBH.

The Megadrive one is reportedly the superior game.. there's more strategy to the combat than the sequel, the design is a bit cleaner and the story is better.

The Saturn game is a prequel story-wise so there's nothing to worry about  in regards to that..
