I’m really enjoying this, it’s great.

Amazing they put out a solid, good looking, story-driven, single player game, devoid of online, microtransactions, DLC, etc, much like we've enjoyed for the last thirty-odd years, based on the most popular ever sci-fi franchise, and...they're surprised people buy it. I can hear Jim Sterling now.

Took me a bit of time to get into this but now I’ve unlocked a few skills it’s growing on me.

Got some frustrations with the lack of fast travel back to the Mantis, although I appreciate there’s a design decision there to encourage exploration and set-up a few story beats.

I suck at parrying, even on normal, but never played a Souls-type game, so not overly frustrated by it, just wish I had better reaction speeds!

Overall, generally plays well, looks nice and sounds amazing. Certainly the most fun I’ve had with a Star Wars game since the Lego games back on the 360.

I know it's just a game and you could do whatever without reason and that's fine, but I think there are better, more fitting options than fast travel. You could have more Mantis pick-up points dotted around the map. I can think of at least one actual landing pad area on the Zeffo map and the Mantis doesn't even have to land to pick him up.

I also sucked at parrying in this. I think it's a lack of obvious cues when you pull it off. It makes you realise why Sekiro has huge sparks and clangs and Dark Souls has a loud thud.

I started playing this this week and really enjoying it - much more than I expected to, to the extent that I'm tempted to take an day/afternoon off work to put in a few hours interrupted (tend to only be able to grab an hour or so of an evening due to kids).

Never played a Souls game and still tend to get a bit overexcited and rush into enemies bashing X, but trying to be a bit more measured and use parry, dodge etc.  Expect I need to learn this stuff now if I don't want to have to drop it down to Story mode at some point!

Some of the dialogue in this is brilliant - love listening to the Stormtroopers chatting. There was a bit earlier where I overheard them talking about an impending attack, and one said to the other something like “well at least we have the high ground” :)

Don't think I've seen this posted...

Kotaku reported over the last few days on EA revealing they have cancelled a Battlefront spin-off. However a footnote to that report is that they have also confirmed Respawn are beavering away on Fallen Order 2 officially.

I mean we all knew it was coming, but still nice to confirm it :D

For context - Battlefront 2 is now making very decent money. There's not point in making a costly spin off, they can keep the game updated and double, triplet through and on and on.

So cancelling the spin off and focussing on a new single player title works - it allows them to further lock in the EA with the Star Wars brand.

In the end it's all money, and they've realised that on the whole making decent games helps that.

Just defeated

Spoiler

the ninth sister, although suspect she’s not actually dead.

What a great fight! Took me a few goes but was properly tense when I finally managed it, and so  satisfying.

How far through the game am I now? I can’t find anywhere that tells me how long I’ve been playing - have I missed it somehow?

Started this after finishing Days Gone and only had a few days on it so far (Tarkov sucking me in too much).

Just got to the wookie planet after Zeffo and quick trip back to Bogo and it's growing on me a lot. Not been to Dathomir yet, bit scared. Same annoyances as others so far i think. Ice slides are terrible in every way and the map is just awful. A bit more polish would have made a world of difference. But then it does something and you're like, aah, all is forgiven, amazing. Nailed the SW feel totally.

Persevere with the annoying sliding bits.

Seek out additional stim packs - that definitely makes life a bit easier.

Enjoy - it’s great!

As above, ignore the sliding bits.

I’d also say start on normal and tune the difficulty to your play style as you go. If you start breezing through then turn it up a bit (I wish I had), it should feel dangerous if you just steam in every fight. If you get stuck and start getting frustrated with it then turn it down.

It’s a game best enjoyed with threat and challenge present, but keeping the story unfolding fluidly. Not something to stubbornly bang your head against repetitive chucks again and again (actual frustration tolerance is subjective obviously).

Most of all soak up some of the best Star Wars in years.  Enjoy!

Unsure if anyone ever posted this, but here's the full song Cal was listening to in the intro. The instrumental from 4.20 onwards is really pretty good.

Agree with all the above as much as I've played. Must get back to it but Tarkov is so, so distracting.

I started on normal/default for the first three planets then knocked it down one and it became far, far more enjoyable.

Not quite sure why but finding this difficult to get into, I felt lost in the opening section not knowing where to go or jump?

Is it me or the main chracters animation/model at times seems really low spec & off?

It seems a bit lacking in tutorials explaining the various systems/mechanics. Quite a few stages during the game it would just freeze with some on screen prompts & would not let me progress further until I just bashed all the buttons on the controller.

I'm on Bogano so will spend a bit of time here exploring and figuring everything out including how to read the map.

Spoiler

I died three times in the opening section

It is not without it's clunk and I would say all the bosses are definiely not the highlight so just drop the difficulty for those, however I loved the humanoid combat and the exploration and overall thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. Would happily play more story driven content as DLC.

After playing a few hours today, I’m enjoying it more. The combat is tough Dark Souls like which hopefully I will get better at over time. I’m not a fan of the Dark Souls/From Software hard as nails games but this is Star Wars and so far it’s ok.

I know exactly what you mean but it does improve . Though just when you think, yes, we're really rolling now it stutters or glitches or gets very clunky again. It just desperately needed that extra polish like we have all said. Definitely drop it down a level if it's tough, massively improves the enjoyment.

I went back and am searching for a wookie up a tree now but if I'm honest getting a bit bored. Will see it through and hope it picks up some more.

Oh and that bloody map, beyond useless. took me an age to get off/back to the ship on the ice planet. Who on earth though that was a good idea?

Ive said it before and I’ll say it again . This is an ordinary game made interesting by a Star Wars license .

Yep if it did not have the Star Wars licence I would have quit already to go play something else instead.

I think I’ve figured it out having spent quite a bit of time on Bogano but agree it really is a rubbish map.

I always find this a really weird criticism. It's not like the game is Watto's Bantha Racer 2019, it's clearly a game that's made with its license in mind and works in every sense because it's Star Wars. The bits that don't work; the map, the navigation/checkpointing, the JANK are nothing to do with Star Wars. The reason it's good is because they looked at their license and worked out what they could do with it that'd be really good fun. It's not just an average game with Star Wars tacked on, it's a really good Star Wars game with some disappointingly average bits tacked on.

I have 2 skill points to use but can’t unlock any more abilities on the survivor skill tree?

Because I suck at combat anything that gives me a longer health bar better defence is a must for now.

if you take any of the big hitting games of the same genre ; uncharted , h:zd, god of war , Spider-Man , days gone etc ( ie an narrative based, action heavy third person adventure ) it’s not a patch on any of them .
The one thing it has going for it is the combat ( and even that is dodgy in places ) and of course , the universe it’s set in, but in every other regard , for me , it falls short .
