Mega Drive Mini, and now... Mega Drive Mini 2!

I'm starting with the Sega CD games because I'm least familiar with them.

Sewer Shark is infuriating. First of all it took a silly amount of time to understand how to make turns correctly. I was getting it wrong, and this is one of those 90s games with "tude" that insults you when you get things wrong. Eventually I realised how it works: the navigator will yell out three correct turns - such as "Twelve, three, twelve" - which means up, right, up. However, the game will also present you with a bunch of WRONG directions along the way, so you must ignore those and only take the turns you were told.

I finally got the hang of it... then it abruptly Game Over'd anyway. I was making the correct turns and had plenty of energy. The obnoxious co-pilot suggested I hadn't scored enough, I think? Well fuck you too.

Night Trap... that's an interesting game. You can't afford to watch any of the plot scenes, because you'll miss all the Augers creeping around. So you know these teenage girls are having a dance party in the living room, and you know the vampire family are talking about plot stuff in the kitchen, but you can't afford to watch that -- instead you have to keep flicking between the empty rooms to look for Augers. At the same time, if you miss the vampire family talking about the access code colour you're screwed. Mr SCAT Moustache Douche gives you an abrupt Game Over for letting too many Augers in the house, or for not seeing a girl get murdered. It's another game that likes to tell you off for doing a bad job when you fail. Yeah, no, stick your job.

Yeah pretty sure the  US/UK list is exactly the same - someone did tell me changing the region to japanese gets some other games though - haven't tried myself.

Changing to Japanese changes the region of the games but not the games list. Useful for Bare Knuckle 3 of course because the western version is ludicrously difficult in comparison.

The game list is exactly the same for US and UK versions, but there are some differences in presentation and how to access games.

US Genesis model: When the language is set to English it defaults to a US Genesis presentation with US ROMs. If you want JP presentation and JP variants of some games you switch the language to JP. If you want Euro Mega Drive presentation you switch to French or German.

UK Mega Drive model: When the language is set to English it defaults to a UK Mega Drive presentation. I'm not sure if any ROMs this time are EU variants (like Probotector and Castlevania: The New Generation on the previous mini). If you want JP presentation and JP variants of some games you switch the language to JP. If you want a USA Genesis presentation you switch... oddly... to Korean.

I wonder why (beyond obvious costs etc) they improved Space Harrier with “scaling tech” but not Afterburner or Outrunners etc. They’re both scaler games right?

Woulda been interesting if they could have gotten Virtua Racing to run at a higher frame rate.

I'd guess because Space Harrier 2 is a Mega Drive exclusive. All the other games have superior arcade originals or better ports available elsewhere.

If you select the EU version of Sonic CD or Robo Aleste they seem to be 50hz.

They looked a bit jerky to me anyway. Could have been my imagination.

Nope, you're right. Lord I hate 50hz I can spot it instantly.

If you want Sonic CD with the original soundtrack at 60hz change the language language to Japanese. 👍

Was this sold by any other stores in the UK other than Amazon? I know it said Amazon exclusive on their page but I would have thought other stores were still getting stock? Smyths? Shopto?

If not I wonder if more people are aware now (as in Im sure this is happening with many other goods) how Amazon's long fabled monopoly may finally be visible for most people?

To be fair it was always advertised as Amazon only and limited numbers months ago.  People hoping it would flop and then would be able to get it on the cheap were kidding themselves.

I can't speak for everyone but I certainly didn't hope it would flop. I just felt that there was a chance they would still be knocking around later and the price would drop. The first one plummeted despite doing well. And if this reached a better price I might've made an impulse purchase.

We know that this is the edition for the real MD zealot (I was lucky enough to have a SFC so that's not me) and most people won't fit that description. I like the idea of companies putting out 2 mini editions: one with the hits and one with the deep cuts for the more discerning owner. Then I remember it's yet another lump of plastic and wish they would've been able to sell an extra package of games for the original like Taito is doing.

Sorry man, didn't mean anyone here personally, just the usual places like hotukdeals " FLOP! WHERE'S SONIC 2 AGAIN. WORTH £50 TOPS !"

It's interesting that Taito is the only one with a SD card slot. They must feel confident enough that the hacking scene has died down enough to risk not only including a slot but selling add on cards as well. That said, history is proving them right up to now.

How do the games look on a 4k TV, specifically an Oled? It's quite a long way from 720p to 4k.

Surprisingly good actually, if I hadn’t know I’d have guessed it was outputting 1080p. It’s certainly a better image than the Switch Home Screen, which I understand is also 720p
