This just in:

Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS) and Marvel Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE:MVL) announced today that they have entered into an agreement, whereby EA will develop a new generation of fighting video games pitting Super Heroes from the Marvel Universe against a new, original set of EA heroes.

Under the multi-year agreement, EA has been granted a license to develop and distribute fighting games featuring the Marvel Super Heroes. Additionally, EA has granted Marvel the exclusive rights as worldwide licensing agent for all consumer products and media licensing for the new EA heroes. Marvel will publish new comic books introducing the EA characters. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for EA to create new characters for fighting games that can be exploited through our global merchandise licensing machine to fuel sales in many other product categories," said Allen Lipson, President and CEO of Marvel Enterprises.

"It's a unique opportunity, partnering with Marvel to bring their renowned Super Heroes into original videogame environments, as well as providing us an opportunity to create new heroes that will live in games, comic books and other licensing or media opportunities that Marvel presents," said John Riccitiello, President and COO for Electronic Arts. "Fans of both traditional Marvel comics as well as video games have a lot to be excited about as they will be able to fight it out between established Marvel Super Heroes and EA's new heroes in original scenarios," added Riccitiello.

The Marvel and EA Super Hero based fighting games are currently under development for multiple game platforms at EA's studio, EAC, in British Columbia. The license grants EA the rights to develop game titles for all current and next generation videogame consoles, handheld platforms and PCs.

"pitting Super Heroes from the Marvel Universe against a new, original set of EA heroes"? What EA heroes will they come up with? And new comics books starring the same heroes? I can't help but feel a tiny bit of skepticism here.

i wonder if the will show the origins of those characters, as they were once mighty and innovative then ea came along and purchased them and treated with their secret clonium90 element which turned them into bland generic shadows of their former selves

What the hell? What makes them think that EA are going to be able to come up with any good characters?

Oh well, I look forward to seeing what they come up with, especially on the game front.

The terrifying FOCUS GROUP

um.

But they'd all have the same power to turn anything they touched in a grey boring version of it's previous self (with bigger tits of course). Not much mileage there.

MvsC2 was one of the reasons I bought a Dreamcast.

Now I have a reason to never buy another console ever again.

Woo!

Think of the money I'll save.

Let me take you for a ride!!

At least they're trying something faintly original for once. Can't really beat them with the 'lazy sequel' stick over this one. I think it has potential. Let's see what they come up with.

(Of course I'm not saying the won't ruin it with yearly updates and excessive over-merchandising, but then Rome wasn't built in a day).

Rip off a bunch of games that have already been made by a different company with an already existing roster of much loved characters? EXCELSIOR!

...

I try not to be negative, but really, this is absurd.

It will be a bit like Tekken, but it'll miss the point. Any marvel characters will be reworked to be more like their counterparts from the X-Men films. Any EA heroes will be "dark" and "gritty". The soundtrack will be Linkin Park.
