Just finished Dopesick. Brilliant bit of television, hope it wins all the awards. So disgusting how the opioid crisis happened, fuelled entirely by greed, and entirely unnecessary to begin with.

The missus and I finished it last night and I agree with you.

what really makes me angry is that it’s far too easy to get away with outright crimes if you have enough money. What the Sackler family did is far, far worse than what most people on american death row has ever done. I just don’t get it.

The crazy thing is that Richard Sackler’s uncle Arthur had created a kind of blueprint for their fuckery in the 60s with the combined sale and marketing of Valium, and made enough money off the back of it to build the largest ever collection of Chinese art, fund museums and art galleries and have the family name cleaned up by all these philanthropic endeavours.  There’s an excellent book on the Sackler family called Empire of Pain, based on this article in the New Yorker https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/10/30/the-family-that-built-an-empire-of-pain/amp - well worth a read.

This quote from a senate staffer written in the 60’s (taken from the article above) sums it up well “The Sackler empire is a completely integrated operation in that it can devise a new drug in its drug development enterprise, have the drug clinically tested and secure favorable reports on the drug from the various hospitals with which they have connections, conceive the advertising approach and prepare the actual advertising copy with which to promote the drug, have the clinical articles as well as advertising copy published in their own medical journals, [and] prepare and plant articles in newspapers and magazines.” The fact that they were doing essentially the same thing 30 years later with even more horrific outcomes and under the nose of the FDA is just utterly depressing.

Just seen The Wonder Years was on Disney+, but my semi was immediately inverted when I clicked on it to see it was some 2021 guff about a black family.

Um, it's a new version of the show about a black family in the '60's, yes?

Is it any good?

Oh, I saw that Wonder Years tab after watching Mr Inbetween, and I’d assumed it was some sort of amazing Yuletide synchronicity as I happened to see ten minutes of a Christmas movie on C5 last week where WINNIE! was the main businesswoman character who goes home and KEVIN’S DAD! was her father or worked for her or something.

It seems not.

I finished it yesterday too, I thought it was fantastic. Brilliant acting throughout by Michael Keaton.

Thanks for the folk shouting out Mr Inbetween. Would never have picked it up otherwise. Binged 5 episodes on a train journey.

Funny but pretty serious too, plus some of that enjoyable outside-the-law shenanigans you get in Get Carter, Dead Man’s Shoes, etc.

Just finished Dopesick, absolutely loved it.  Not what I expected to see on Disney

Disney had no hand in its production (thank fuck). And it originally aired on Hulu.

Watched the first two and they are great. Both the leads are superb. Lily James is utterly transformed. Seb Stan is fantastic too. Definite awards potential for her. Even Rogen has had quite the change, dude is way trimmer than I’ve ever seen him.

It’s actually incredibly sweet, both Pam and Tommy come across as very vulnerable (when Tommy’s not being an asshole).

Star turn is of course Jason Mantzoukas as Tommy’s talking penis. Literally amazing scenes.

Didn’t see a thread on it, not sure how much point there is to making one, but watched a few episodes of the High Fidelity TV show.

Had no idea it existed until earlier today.

They only made one series and then got cancelled but it’s pretty good.

They modernised it and made the main character a woman of colour (Zoe Kravitz), Jack Black’s character is now the main woman from Dolemite Is My Name.

It’s actually way better than I expected and seems a shame that it got cancelled.
