Ah this may explain some of the problems I've been experiencing in the ferrari with stavelot, it was never such a big problem in previous races. Will play around with the toe settings and see how it feels.

Yeah absolutely. Many are now finding that with fixed toes in 488 one not only gets more rotation but of course more top speed, and that improved rotation allows for lower rake and wing that further improves speed and stability. M4 aero fixed, 720 nerfed a bit and now this. Ferrari is back at the front again.

You seeing this, @davejm? Let's get back into the 488, mate! 😆

Boothby did a low 2:16 in race yesterday. In Ferrari, with a setup he handwaved minutes prior. So the potential is definitely there and its not just BMW and 720 anymore.

So attention everyone. Turns out the game has a bug or glitch in the setup screen that effects some cars, at least those that have the toe setting range go way negative. The set static toe is wrong: its way, way more positive in the saved setup file. So set 0.00 toe is actually like 0.20. Something like -0.25 is actually static 0. This effects balance(no wonder some cars have been stupid understeery), tyre wear and top speed. Cars not effected or effected only a bit are M4, M6, 720, Nissans at least. I dont think its entirely coincidential that it was specifically the pre-update OP 720 and M4 that happened to be uneffected. Some of the big losers that could not have been setup around this glitch and be fast had been Boat, Ferrari, Aston, Lexus, Honda at least. Those cars should be back now and the M4-720 meta is over.

So if you dont drive M4, M6, 720, Porsche, maybe Lambo, heres what you do: go to setup screen and reduce toes by 0.2 at least. Experiment a bit. You may immediately find half a second of laptime and find the car easier to drive too!

Some aliens had of course been using this for a long time but chose to not reveal it. Even CDA boys. Disappointing, so disappointing.

So this could explain the mad understeer I've struggled with in the 488 Evo at Spa lately that I can't seem to find a way to fix?

Disclaimer; I MIGHT be doing something wrong in other areas of the setups or just be entering too fast but still feel that it's  worth asking :D

EDIT: I did a quick test before I had to log off and it worked wonders. Changed toe with 0.25 and improved my best lap with this car by almost a second. Feels way grippier in the corners and now I feel that most of the lap time I lose is because of driver error and suboptimal driving.

HUGE thanks for this tip, this explains why I've been struggling with way more understeer in most of the cars I've driven lately and also why I've been struggling with dialing in a setup that improves this.

I cant make it either. Going to leave for a weekend trip early Friday morning so I need to prepare and pack things.

Pschaw, a weekend pack is like twenty minutes' work maximum! Although knowing you Finns you've got to arrange a bunch of fishing and hunting gear and homebrewed vodka, maybe that takes a little longer.

Just to clarify, will this still work with the McLaren if my setup has a positive toe?  So let's say it is currently 0.1, should I set to -0.1?  (which is the minimum the 720s can do to, at least in the rear).   Do we apply to the front and rear?

EDIT: Gonna just forget about this and carry on as normal, cause I can't understand whether we should be adjusting our setups to get around the issues the bug is causing, or whether just setting a extreme negative toe is an exploit.  I'd rather not bother if it's just an exploit, cause I assume it'll get patch out and then the handling will revert back.

Its not an exploit. Some cars like 720 are fine. Its something that happens between setting the value in setup and game calculating what it actually is: on some cars when set 0 its not actually 0 but positive 0.3 or 0.4 or something stupid that slows them down and induces horrible understeer. Old setups work and behave just like they used to when given -0.3 toe in setup screen. Understeer gone, snappyness gone, tyre wear gone, top speed back. Suddenly Ferrari, Aston, AMG etc are matching McLaren and BMW again.

Was back in VR this week - my first race in the Quest 2 - and it worked perfectly.

The first race I ended up dead last after clumsily sideswiping @Meers on the opening run through Eau Rouge.  I blame my spotter who said "clear on the right" but was clearly lying!  Sorry dude.

I raced on regardless, and capitalising on all sorts of incidents in front, somehow finish on the podium 😄

Race 2 - I gave @Meers room this time - so a happier start for all concerned.  My replay file is pretty much empty of action - here's the vid, but its not very interesting...

Anyone tell me what happened up front?!

Daniel sailed serenely off into the distance, I gave Dave a decent chasing and got pretty close once or twice but then got a final warning for track cuts (2 of which were really just lazy on my part) and backed off a bit. Erm, that's about it. Sneaky was consistently somewhere not too far behind me in all of this as well.

Damn, where's my overtake for second on those first race highlights! Dave kinda slid briefly on an exit and there was a slightly brown trousers moment where I thought I was going to clip his car but got through just about.

I need to change car or game . So far off the pace since up I came back. Stacked it early doors race 2 and that was enough for me. I just seem to be sliding everywhere but I’ve had those setups forever. Most frustrating. Or can we get some worse drivers back! I prefer the practice to the racing these days…..

Yeah it was surprising to see the green monster cut me off all of a sudden. Don't sweat it, Al.

Out of interest, how much peripheral view do you have in VR when looking straight ahead? It is anything like in real life (about 180°) or much narrower? And is it possible to quickly turn your head to check next to you going up a corner like that? I take it there's all sorts of car interior in the way?

Also a question to everyone here - which spotter are you using, the in-game one or the Crew Chief app? Does anyone have any experience with both, and if so what's the difference between the two?

Would you like to do a session together to sort out your car and setup? I noticed that your car was very oversteery where it shouldn't be, so I think we have to sort that out at least. Maybe I can help you to find more pace as well, and hopefully your racing mojo as well.

I wasn't fortunate last night. Kept making mistakes - in the 1st race my car made an uncontrollable slide (if it goes, it goes, doesn't it?) turning into the left-hander after Bruxelles and lost a lot of time there. Soldiered on and ended up 5th, surprisingly.

In the 2nd race I had a good start and pace. Kept up with Dave, Mike and Gaz. But then in lap 5 (or something) I hit the right-side kerb going up Raidillon a bit too much which made my car jump a bit. I was still turning the wheel right at that point, so I lost it immediately and careered into the barrier on the right. Massively damaged, I limped back to the pits for repairs (it said repairs would take ~90 seconds but when I arrived at my crew it jumped down to ~60 seconds). I carried on but apparently they weren't able to fix the car properly (hence the jump down in repair time?) because the car understeered like a stagecoach. After about a lap I gave up.

I think sprint races are not my forte, I much prefer long ones. I take too many risks and fuck up as a result, in an attempt to keep up with the pace. Think I need to work on that more.

After my early finish I tried some different cars at Spa in pubic lobbies. The newer Merc seemed pretty stable , so I may change to that . Will be doing some more testing prior to next week.

@Meers, thanks for the offer. I think some of this may be in my head as well, so I need to get through that first.

The VR field of view is quite narrow and varies by headset so peripheral view isn't great, but it is possible to quickly look over left or right to see if anyone's there - either out the window or in your mirrors. Some cars have better seating positions (Macca) than others for visibility in terms of A pillars being in the way, or lower viewpoints etc.

I use CrewChief for spotting which seems to be better for me. I also love the fact it takes away the mental effort of fuel calculations. I've got a button mapped on my wheel that prompts Crew Chief to tell me the fuel situation.

In races, I use a combination of the track map, mirrors and CrewChief to be aware of others. Track map for overall situation and predicting when someone going to be close enough to make a move, and the spotter for more realtime info.

But in the opening lap and in wheel to wheel racing I just try to maintain a predictable line and don't turn in unless I'm *sure* nobody is there. In my mind it's better to compromise a single corner when unsure, rather than collide with someone. Endurance races are long enough that the faster driver will generally beat a slower one and it's rarely decided on one corner. (That said, I still recall holding @SANtoOos off for the last few laps in Hungry once!)

Love sound of this!  I didn't know you could do it, how did you set it up?

I also really like CC, adds so much to the feeling of being in a race and the spotter is great.

I'd say the view is fairly realistic in that if you were wearing a full face race helmet with a visor, that's the sort of view  you get in VR.  You can absolutely check over your shoulder for a car next to you at any point - interior roll cage and pillars will be in the way a bit - but it's fine.

I didn't do that specifically because the in game spotter said "clear on the right" and I therefore assumed you'd bottled it and gifted me the corner.  I should've known the mighty  @Meers bows to no man!

I never got round to sorting Crew Chief - maybe I should have a play with it.

I can't remember the exact steps as I'm not at my gaming PC at the mo, but you basically map a controller button to one of the supported voice actions. I use the 'how's my fuel' command.

@Erik - I always do the fuel calc before the race too, but I often find myself doubting my calculations mid race, and I like the reassurance that I've not messed it up :)

I use Crew Chief and the ingame spotter, they don't always agree. Actually I forgot to load Crew Chief last night, not that it would've helped my fuel fuckup. Also, the proximity radar overlay can be handy, but I do find it hard to look at that AND the road.

Normally I work out fuel as Erik does, using an Android app called 'ACC Strategist' as a starting point. Don't wanna be thinking about that in a race! Last night when we started race 1 I saw the temp at 16C, thought "oh cool I have that setup already" so loaded the file, and only after I clicked Drive did I realise I hadn't set the fuel up on that one yet. Curses. No undo option on the Drive button!
