Yeah I was fortunate this time that I only got superficial damage from the spin so I lost 20-30 seconds getting myself back on the road, and a bit of time having to get past people again, but no long tricky pitstop like yours. Given the eventual gaps I might've actually won without that, oh what might have been!

*shimmery what might have been screen effect*

Chaps, I'm looking for a new monitor for my sim racing rig. Do you guys reckon a curved screen is a good choice?

I think it had good specs - freesynch, 1ms latency, 160Hz... Can't go wrong for that price?

Your current monitor is pretty large right?  You might find a 34" pretty small.  I know losing vertical real estate isn't a massive deal for sim racing, but try to get a sense of the actual size of it (try cutting out a bit of cardboard maybe).

If you ARE happy with the size, you can't go wrong with that one.  Those curved Ultrawide VA panels are very good bang for buck.

EDIT: just had a look at the 38 and 40 inch Ultrawides, and they're very expensive.  At that price an LG OLED makes more sense.  Hopefully you're happy with the size of the 34" and can grab one of those bargain panels.

Thanks for your insight, Dave.

My current TV is 55", so yeah the size will be quite a downgrade. The monitor will be placed right against the wheel base, so I will give your excellent cardboard suggestion a try.

Yeah bigger screens are crazy expensive. I can go one size bigger, but that'll pretty much be my budget limit.

Cool, hopefully bringing it closer means you won't lose any horizontal real estate; but give it a go.   That's the key thing really.  Having freesync and the higher frame rates is good, obviously, but not if you can't see your apexes in the same way you could before.

I use the in-game 'look in the direction you're steering in' view option for that already, so that probably stays even with an ultra-widescreen monitor (will reduce the angle and speed a bit though- it's a great alternative* to VR head turning). 😅😶

* or a poor man's VR haha.

So there's this panel as well, even wider (and bigger) and still reasonably affordable. But since I'm eyeing up an RTX3060 as well, I can get the 34" and the 3060 for that money.

I'm not sure if that hat fits us all. 😅

The graphics are just so much better on a screen, right?

...Right?

Think of a screen as showing a nice hi res picture of the actual graphics that you can only see in a VR hat.

So, yeah, they're "better" on a screen, but not real :)

I understand. Still unsure about motion sickness and headaches as I've never sim raced in VR. Would love to try before I buy, but no idea how.

Edit: just found a 2nd hand quest 2 for €145, barely used according to the seller... Don't some of you guys use the quest 2?

I used a Quest 1 for ages and recently upgraded to a Quest 2 after buying a refurbed one from a forum chap.

In the vast majority of cases the VR sickness and headaches go away as you get used to it. I remember feeling so bad once I had to sit outside in the fresh air with my head between my knees and concentrate on not throwing up. Now all I get is a bit hot.

Well that's an honest answer! 😅

Still unsure if I want to cut off all my senses when Mrs Meers is out and I'm home alone with the kids. Gonna be mulling over it a bit longer methinks...

In other news...looks like we're moving house somewhere in November. Finances are being looked into now and they took pictures of our current house this morning. Will be put up for sale soon! Anyone wanna buy a house and move to the Netherlands?

So I think I'll have less time for sim racing around the end of October and throughout November, maybe early December. 😓

Still, gonna get myself a dedicated game room, which is nice.

thats a pretty good price if genuine. I was thinking about one back in summer and saw a lot of scam sellers on facebook marketplace around that value. (They’d have one “barely used unwanted gift” etc but then clicking on their profile it turns out they have about six along with loads of other tech, before that we tried one who went quiet when we tried to arrange cash on pickup, was only keen to post it)

come to London and have a go of my Quest 1!

I was pretty safe on the motion sickness, I could get it going if I was playing a flight sim and did aerobatics and/or a bad enough frame rate. Can’t remember the last time I suffered now though.

I hope it is. For that price I'll say "fuck it" and try my luck. I'll give the seller a bit of a screening first though.

You have no idea how much I would love to, but alas - we're too busy with our new house shizzle. 😓

Hmm, now there's a thought... how about the potential for an ACC'ers meet in London, one day?

Absolutely! If you guys don't mind it being early 2023?

Mrs Meers and I were planning to take a belated honeymoon trip to the UK somewhere next year (when the move is over and done with), so maybe we can combine it with an ACC meet?
