If any of you have a LOT of time on your hands (I have been putting it on in the background during work hours and then focusing/rewinding when something in particular grabs me), Aris did another of his "Be a better simracer" streams over the last week or so. (He's one of the game devs, for the uninitiated).  There's some real gold in there, and I think quite a lot it this year will specifically benefit people at our level. For example I know some of us sometimes moan that the more alien drivers seem to be able to brake late and at the end of part 3 they get quite deep into ABS, some subtleties of trail braking and braking later-getting turn in, releasing earlier, gear selection... etc.

Part 1 is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAUCVXsxuVE

here's the programme in the extra-long part 3:

If you get really into it, the one from a year ago is on his channel along with loads more - the "TL;DW" series are some edited streams that cover a few things, there's "Track walks" that get incredibly detailed about each circuit. I think other people's track guides are a good quick way to learn a bit about line choice and braking points but you need to invest a lot more time to get more depth. Each of these streams gives me at least a few moments of "ohhhhhhh" realisations. Then I go practice and utterly fail to get it reliably into my technique, but that's another time investment. It certainly helped me with a couple of things to work on at Misano this time, not that this did me any good this week thanks to Virgin Media!

Fantastic, thanks for posting @milko - that's exactly the kind of stuff I need. Now quick, take it down before the others see it - they're too quick already!

Haha yes there are times when I think "I should really keep this a secret"! Can't have you lot learning the same things as me, it's my only competitive advantage.

At Misano I'm betting it's track cuts, 4 of those in a race means a drive through. Quite easy to do it if you're pushing hard, I managed to get 2 in about 10 seconds when I was experimenting with a quick AI race. You've got to lift off so it doesn't think you're tryingt to cheat.

@mexosTrack limits 🙈

The whole track is exploitation of the track limits.

Watching @OJM CHICKEN Was something else. I tried to attack the track the same way but just didn't have the confidence to pull it off.

Tbh is never got much practice in due to me shoulder. My plan over Christmas was to spend time With ACC but that went up in the air with my feet that drunken night/morning.

It really is just practice, i've got a lot of free time being young (not calling anyone old) and all so 500 hours in i've learnt the exploits in the system, most youtube track guides might show small exploits but never anything massive and if you lack confidence just add downforce and increase tc until comfortable and then remove it gradually. Also misano has really weird lines to it espcially at 3, 4 and 6 the lines are tricky to get right.

I don't think I ever felt like I'd hit Turn 10 properly either. Maybe just because it's one of those where the power always feels too late even if you are doing it well.

We have a whole new world of pain in Bathurst though - long laps, dangerous corners and walls all over the place, plus it's a 1 hour race with tyre change so no second chances. Can't wait!

But you're right, most of us are 30+ and have limited time to practice. 😅

Back from the hospital yesterday to see if I can do the rest of the treatments at home. SO good to be back, but my body is now functioning almost as a 90 year-old haha. Woke up in the early AMs and couldn't sleep so decided to get started on the mountain and see how it felt. Extremely nice to be back driving, but my breath and debilitating cough fits makes it a bit difficult to consistently drive many laps in a row so a bit uncertain with regards to  Thursday. Expecting to be a lot better by then so I'll put in the practice I can manage until then with the aim to make the grid.

Biggest problem is the constant itch and restrictions in my chest and the cough attacks, hopefully the next few days they get better so I don't black out while driving, because that's suboptimal, especially on the top of the mountain.

I really love this track even though I find it infuriatingly difficult. There's something about the feeling you get when you're able to string together the turns on the top and on the way down that's exhilarating. I predict a LOT of chaos and punts on Thursday but will try to put as many laps in for confidence and consistency myself so I'm as little dangerous as possible 😄

Rig is delivered on Monday but the monitor stand hasn't been shipped yet so still on the old setup. Even more to look forward too while on sick leave 😄

But - can't describe how good it is to be back home and be able to drive and recover in a safe environment. And happy to be a part of this community. You guys really brightened up my days at the hospital, especially on race day. Thank you for that!

Good to hear you're back home, mate. Now take it easy for a while, will you. 🫣

Thanks mate, I'm taking things very easy indeed. Enjoy some laps here and looking forward to the new gear arrives, looks like the rig and monitor arrives on Monday and the monitor stand on Tuesday if I'm lucky so I might get to enjoy the mountain from a new rig if I'm able to build it.

Testing a few more laps and maybe I'll do some trucking or watch YT vids until bedtime. Can't wait to get back to the old energy levels and strength!

In a little over a month i'll hit my 20s. Im getting there slowly

Is there anyone here who didnt have a driving licence when OJM was born? 😜

I think I’d have been pretty quick if I started sim racing when I actually had some sort of reactions, and it seems I might be in the younger generation at almost 41 😂

Hahaha! I started SIM racing two or three years ago, I too wonder how quick I'd been if I started this when I was young. My parents wouldn't let me play video games at home, and I actually wasn't able to afford a gaming PC until 2016 so I too wonder how quick I'd be if I started in my teens 😄

But it's great to have guys from the younger generations here, always nice to have diverse groups! I'm relieved I'm not the oldest here haha

Spent most of the day trying to dial my wheel in and get used to all this again. Getting there. Traditionally I’ve hated this circuit and been terrible at it. After (almost) a Bathurst 1000 distance today  it’s making a bit more sense. Next step, try racing the AI. I assume it will be carnage, the track is barely wider than the cars. 😅

That’s me, didn’t get my license till I was about 35. Automatic license.
