haha yes I think I got a comedy warning like that, despite there being one or two other occasions when I'd winced and expected a penalty but was left to get on with it. (Aside from being berated by Crew Chief, who I've noticed is a LOT more strict about this sort of thing than ACC's race steward! "For fuck's sake Mike, are you even trying to keep it on the track?" did not help my mood in race 1, yes I bloody am thanks!)

Knowing ACC is it not somehow reflecting what the real life tracks/series do or something?

You can see from David Perels onboards from 2018 back when it was blancipan they really abused the track limits, especially at barcelona, not sure its to the same extent but for when the game came out at least track limits were a lot less strict.

Button box update.

I've sourced some bits form UK suppliers (it's all Chinese crap tho) I just need to get some of it tested and prove its all good.

Need some on-off-on switches as the ones I got at as heavy duty as those that doctor Frankenstine used and would break even the strongest housing.

I was originally just going to buy a wireless number pad, but I think I've decided it's too messy.

My next thought was just to connect a control pad and perhaps mount it on the rig somewhere, then I started looking for a cheap small arcade stick or something.

Then I started looking at something like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/404091715646

(but possibly a wireless version) as a cheap alternative, but am not sure if I'm just buying cheap / buying twice as it were.

So... I eagerly await your feedback on making an actual box :)

I'm really looking forward to the button box updates! THat macro pad doesn't look bad at all actually @Corranga - I wonder how much of a ballache getting it mounted on a rig. Not as fun as a true custom one with rocker switches and safety covers and whatnot though :)

Also had some good news that my work thing on Thursday night was cancelled again, so I can race after all. Love trying (and failing to get close) to master the Nurbz. One day I'll do T3-into-4 right, you just wait.

I went digging for @Corranga's macro pad there, seems the eBay one is a good price because it's £35-45 on amazon for what looks like the same thing. But also has reviews! These three seem to tell the story.

Quote

As mentioned in other reviews, the software for this keyboard is quite hard to find, as the baidu-based fileshare link is invalid.

You need to go on the vendor website (link in the description) and follow the link provided by a QR code on the main webpage. This will take you to a link list, download the file labelled “mini keyboard english setting software”.

Once you start programming the keyboard, it works very well. Build quality is excellent, each of the keys have good quality switches inside for decent tactile feedback. The two knobs on the side support a click function as well as adjusting clockwise in both directions.

If the initial setup process could be improved, this would easily be a 5* product.

Ignore the negative stars. It seems people can't use the thing and are giving it a bad rep. If you read the description it tells you what to do. There's a link. Go straight to the website provided and scan the QR code. Download the software and extract via winrar. Open. That's it. It's very customisable and Im gunna buy another one. It was bought so I can have buttons for playing American truck sim. Incab there about 10 buttons. Now I have all the buttons right next to me and where I want them.

Says that it's programmable but the link for the programming software is no longer viable. Product itself does seem sturdy with nice button feel but it's just a decorative paperweight that types the letter C without that functionality.

I might change this review later if I can find a way to make it work. I'm giving it 2 stars just for seeming sturdiness and button feel. May be returning this shortly.

Edit: Found the programme for updating it and it's a custom job made by the manufacturer. Took a few days of digging. Pretty much everything I run it through shows it as Malware. Would not recommend

Which I think could be summarised as "you'll be ok if you've patience for some bullshit and rather oldschool setup faff". It reminds me of certain LED display systems I work with in that regard.

There is one on AliExpress that lists bluetooth compatibility, and shows a screen dump of the software, plus, I've always found AliExpress sellers to be as if not more more customer focussed than eBay so I figured getting the s/w wouldn't be too bad.  From what I understand, once programmed, the device will replicate whatever keypresses you program it to whether on the original PC or otherwise, so set it to either replicate regular keyboard buttons, or perhaps a combination of buttons and forget how you did it / move on.

I still fear it reeks of buy cheap, buy twice

Wireless sounds like a recipe for something vital being impossible because you've run out of battery mid-race :)

But yes, absolutely, I'm going in without too much expectation. Maybe I'll use it for video-edit stuff if it doesn't pass the racing test.

I have issues with my BT keyboard on that it runs away and keeps typing randomly. In 2ghz it's OK so I'd prefer that it wireless was the only way.

I got the headers soldered into the board and soldered wires to the Rotary encoder but I'm not really sure about the encoder connections. The feel of the rotation and push feels good tho but I suspect I may lose some pins if I have to squeeze it into an enclosure.

I'll order other ones and see how they are. Might get some pcb based untis.

The little push buttons I got seem decent enough.

Yeah we do sometimes, when I'm being less lazy with the event creation :D  Perhaps a midnight race for one of the next sprints?

Who's Steffen on the practice server, is that @Meers' buddy or @Junker or somebody else new?

Also, I see @mexos is too fast again, we're going to have to have words about this 'switching car to the one you find suits the track best' if you keep this up! (I kid really, we did used to pretty much enforce a single car per season but I think things got a bit more chill.)

@davejm I remember the time we had a bit of an epic duel on this track, hoping we can repeat that again tomorrow :)

I'm confident mine could be better, but also, pfffffff. It works so it'll have to do :)

I have thrustmaster kit too so if you do get stuck, I'll happily try to help.

Well I was planning on using a completely different car for each race, to learn them. I want to try them all as I don’t know about how they all drive. Dunno why I came back to the Beamer, I think I just loaded it out of habit. I might try out a few other cars tonight. Not tried the Bentley, Jag or the M6 at all and hardly turned a wheel in some of the others.

Yeah it's even more fine for newbies really, even ones that seem to go quicker than everybody else.

The Jag isn't really competitive with the rest of the field, and the M6 probably not ideal either, you don't see many of those since the M4 came out and even before that it was a rare sight online. Might see you on the server later!

That's my colleague, aye! He's from South Africa but lives here now (since last summer) . Turns out he likes sim racing as well. His stuff from SA arrived just before Christmas (including the PC), so we got him a Fanatec CSR set (from a mate) to get him started.

Got him to join the server. Next step is to get him to apply to Sgp.

He won't join the races just yet. Best thing for him right now is to learn the ropes is to have him practice on our server and aim for our lap times. I'll get him up to stream soon though. 😈

Could I pester you guys to critique my fastest lap so far? There are 3-4 tenths to be had in the middle sector, but any advice on my general technique (or lack thereof) or any Nurbs specific hints would be much appreciated.

Looks tidy to me, which makes it hard to spot where you are losing time. The one I do see is at the hairpin. You are treating it like 1 corner when it's actually a double apex.

Is that the camera you are using to race? I can hardly see the track!

Thanks.  Interesting that you say that. I've done it quicker by braking later in a straight line and making it more of a V but it's more risky and I'm less consistent when trying it.

I'll give it some more practice, cheers!
