Maybe I’m just an old fashioned fan boy, but release date is one of the most exciting things to hear announced. Whip us into a frenzy and then tell us all our wildest dreams will be coming true sooner than we ever could have hoped.

All this makes me think is that the value of my PS4 will probably take a dive next year so get rid now.

Why not treat it as a second machine in the bedroom/basement type thing?   It's hardly going to stop being useful for a few more years yet I reckon

Absolutely, mine are going upstairs on my desk when they're replaced. If you're going to worry about BC (and I think a lot of us do now, outside of the Xbox program) then the actual console itself is, by definition, still useful.

I don’t get enough use out of my one TV to justify getting another.

And the PS5 is almost certainly going to be BC with PS4 so I don’t see the point in keeping it.

Why get rid of it now when there are at least 12m until the PS5 launches?

I just don't get much use out of it. I might want to play TLOU2 and Death Stranding but I'm happy to wait and play them on PS5. Between my Xbox One X with Game Pass and Switch I've got far too much to play in the little time I have. Since moving house about a month ago, I haven't even bothered plugging it in.

Hopefully the menus aren't as slow on PS5. Depending on the game a press of the home button can take up to 10 seconds at times. Share button is equally bad.

I will pay full price at launch and continue to play 20+ year old Street Fighter games on it.

same here

Hopefully it’ll be more than just PS4 backwards compatibility as I need some ridge racer

Fair enough.  Although I'd say keep it considering the amount of cash you will get for it.  You know what will happen. After selling it something will cross your eye that you want to play!

Same for me... been in the new house for 2 months now... haven't even unboxed the PS4 Pro or Xbox One... Just been using the Switch.... Although I'll want to play TLOU2 when it comes out so probably dig it out for that.

At the moment not really interested in the PS5 at launch either - Sony will have to start showing me something interesting to get me hooked.... At the moment its looking like a Switch and PC future for me....

I ended up with all 3 consoles at a time where gaming was my main and only real hobby. I’d like to take a crack at getting through the next gen with just one console. Though I doubt I’ll manage it.

I would have done if Nintendo hadn't released the Switch. I don't have an Xbox One and have no real desire for one. So unless Microsoft do something amazing with the Xbox One Two I'll probably stick with a PS5 and whatever madness Nintendo throw out.

I did it this gen. Dumped MS in favour of the PS4 when the vision for Xbox went a bit wobbly at the end of the 360's life. Can't say owning a PS4 has been an amazing experience, the first party stuff is really samey (apart from Bloodborne and a couple of other outliers) and I've been disappointed in how they've ignored some of their best franchises - Wipeout deserved more than just a remake for starters.

With Game Pass MS are looking like the more interesting option next gen - paired with Apple Arcade that's pretty much everything covered for me. The Sony exclusives just aren't worth it.

Ban this sick filth.

I really hope I don't end up buying a pro 4 just for TLOU2. I have a wheezing ps4 that is still going for now, but I want the best experience for that game. It makes no sense to buy a pro. So why am I looking for deals? I am a certified idiot.

I don’t see anyone arguing.

Despite preferring Sony’s exclusives this gen, I think Game Pass Ultimate is pretty hard for me to turn down and might keep me on team green next gen.

But also with Halo Infinite coming to Xbox One X, I’m hoping there will be more of an overlap between gens. I’m not in any rush to upgrade.

I'm actually with Uncle Nasty on this. If you told me even three years ago that I would most likely be buying the new Xbox over the PS5 at launch I'd laugh heartily, but the reality is that since buying a an Xbox One X a couple of years ago and subscribing to GamePass I've barely touched my PS4. And seeing as I'm paid up on GamePass Ultimate until 2022 now it just seems to make the most sense. It's a great service and I don't have the time to play everything I want to on it anymore.

The thing is, as much as I admire Sony's approach to first party exclusives, with a big commitment to new IPs and single player games, in reality I've found most of their first party output underwhelming this generation. They've narrowed their focus tremendously to basically just put out a very particular type of game - the glossy, big budget third party action adventure game with a huge emphasis on narrative, probably a pointless skill tree in there, and a (semi) open world.

For the most part they're very safe, very focus-tested feeling games, so expensive that they don't take any major risks in their bid (and need, given the budget) to sell millions. They're the videogame equivalent of a Marvel movie or a Disney live action remake. I'll exclude Bloodborne and The Last Guardian from this but then one is a third party developed game and Team Ico no longer exists so...

Compared to MS first party I think they're still the safer bet in terms of output volume and production of a certain type of game but looking at the studios MS have acquired I think they could well be the more interesting bet in terms of genre variety.

There's also a chasm between the way MS (and Nintendo) treat Indies and the way Sony do right now. Its become seemingly pretty common knowledge in the industry that Sony doesn't give a rat's ass about promoting Indies anymore, which is a big shame and a far cry from the end of PS3/beginning of PS4.

I'm sure I'll pick up a PS5 eventually and I'm definitely looking forward to The Last of Us 2 and Death Stranding, but I've realised over the course of this gen that their output doesn't actually excite me as much as I once thought it did and won't be a determining factor in which next-gen console I plump for first.

I'll pick up a PS5 once the inevitable more energy-efficient version comes out, by which time the catalogue should be banging. The only thing that might make me dip sooner is the prospect of Demon's Souls and/or Elden Ring, if they're going to be busy online early doors.

Do we still think the Bluepoint game is Demon's Souls? I wouldn't be surprised if it is, especially after Jason Schreier saying he expects a DS remake, inplying he knows more.

The Souls community seems to want one too.

For me, it's not really between Xbox and PlayStation next gen, as I already have a PC with better than next-gen specs, so no need for a nextbox. So, things I'd like to see on PS5 are more games in the vein of Bloodborne, Demon's Souls, TLG, Death Stranding and Astro Bot, improved PSVR and Naughty Dog making Savage Starlight.

Titles like GoW, Horizon and Spidey are fun, but not games I buy a console for personally.

My launch games expectations, based on no hard evidence whatsoever, are Ghost of Tsushima, Demon's Souls and a colourful mascot style game that shows of all the haptic feedback stuff, perhaps an Astro Bot game or Ratchet and Clank.

And there will probably be improved versions of TLoU2, Death Stranding and Dreams down the line.

Power and price gave them the head start at the beginning of this gen, so it’ll be interesting to see what it is this time.

Seamless retention of their existing userbase. BC finally makes strategic sense to implement in full, with crossplay with the existing PS4 userbase too.

Surprised this useful bit of info hasn't been spread across the internet since it went live:

A mandatory baseline of a very high speed SSD could be pretty transformative to how games can be developed, developers do spend an awful lot of their time and money working around the I/O bottleneck at present. Just need to kill support for HDD users first... :hat: so probably only something first party funded games can do in the short term.
