They still plan on 11 million machines out there by end of March 2021 which is an insane number!

Unless this cut of 4 million means I can't get hold of one.

Then it's terrible!

Even 11 million is a small number really, but probably realistic.

The Bloomberg story also reckons that $449 and $349 is the solute lowest Sony will go on the consoles.

In that case you could get back the extra price of the drive within model in 2-3 games when you compare the prices on PSN with the bargains you get from shops on a regular basis on HotUKDeals.

If AMD is having yield problems on PS5, would they be experiencing similar challenges on Series X and Series S? I wonder how much redundancy each company had them build in.

The X has four compute units disabled.  I'd expect the same from Sony. That's what they did this gen.

The high clocks and temps that the PS5 runs at don't help yields.  That's probably part of the reason the S stuck with stuck with such relatively low frequencies.

Tbh, I think this story is just marketing.  "Oh noes, they're going to run out!".

The PS5’s system-on-a-chip, its core processing component designed by AMD, is said to be a particular issue with yields as low as 50 percent at one point, meaning that half the parts produced weren’t fit to ship. While that figure has been improving, according to Bloomberg, the yields are “yet to reach a stable level.”

Are we looking at potential hardware issues for the first batch of consoles, what if the 50% that got through develop issues later?

Tempted to sit out these first batch of consoles now.

Definitely an OCS fan, bet you’re wearing corduroy pants in burnt umber this morning, am I right ;)

I'm not so cool as that I'm afraid, I just stopped listening to chart music in about 2006 because I got old and it wasn't for me anymore, as it should be.

No, screening out bad chips is a very routine part of the process and it’s pretty all-or-nothing. Yields that low are probably pretty disappointing for Sony but surprisingly typical. Compared to the PS3 (which didn’t have too many reliability problems on shipped consoles) 50% is astronomically high.

Surely they could be a bit more vigilant and have someone look for black bits before they fry them.

So potentially no issues with the chips that have made it into production?

I don’t think the actual shipping consoles will be any more likely to fail because of yield problems further back in the production process, no. You expect huge numbers of chips to be rejected at the start, maybe 25%. 50% is worse but it’s still a matter of routine.

Perhaps in the early stages of R&D that might have been true.

my original launch PS4 was DOA. I believe there was a reasonable number of units arrived like

this.

Yep that is my concern some faulty units will slip the net did you manage to get a replacement on release or did you have to get a refund & wait for them to be back in stock?

I still have my launch day PS4 (noisy as a turbine) working fine.

Long story short I got a replacement, but it took a couple of months.

the replacement is the PS4 I still have had use, like yourself.

Fingers crossed you are lucky this time around!

I'm hoping the demand will be for the cheaper digital edition so I can easily buy a physcial version.
