Surprised this hasn't been posted yet:

PS Plus for a year, £22,85 with credit from shopto IF you have a lapsed sub or are a new customer. Stacks for up to four years apparently. Mine lapsed in the summer so i'll definetely grab a year or two at that price.

Just sorted this out. Quidco have an offer today where you get £10 back on a £20 spend, so I bought a £25 PSN voucher for £22.99 from CD Keys who are in the promotion, and bought a year's essential with that. If Quidco does pay out (never guaranteed)  I'd have got a year of PSPlus for £12.53, so it's worth a punt if you haven't done so already.

And have they removed the tilt controller to type function from the PS5?!

I noticed gyro typing had stopped working on the store, and clicking the sticks doesn't activate it, but still works elsewhere. Weird.

Maybe it's a new Edge controller exclusive feature now.

I got a year of PSPlus Extra cheap recently having finally bought a ps5 in November and all I can say is I'm really glad I lost all interest in my ps4 about 5 years ago because of how poorly games performed on it after I got used to 60fps on PC. For someone in this position, I think psplus extra is currently a lot more enticing than Xbox game pass, which has surprised me after reading “best value in gaming” repeatedly about game pass but almost nothing about the PlayStation equivalent.

Played through Miles Morales which was fun and didn't outstay its welcome and currently playing Ghost Of Tsushima which has really clicked in a way open world stuff rarely does for me.

I'm not sure if this comes across as either elitist or casual but I would have been fairly dismissive of the prospect of playing either of those games if they were on PS4 with lower resolutions and 30fps. The 30fps thing mainly. For the past few years I just haven't bothered with console AAA stuff because something about 30fps just made them feel sluggish and, for lack of a better way to explain it, they just didn't really feel fun to play as a result of that sluggishness/latency.

It sort of reinforced a "modern games have boring gameplay" opinion that I started developing over the past few years.

Anyway, playing something like Ghost of Tsushima on ps5 is a revelation, everything is silky smooth and responsive. It just adds so much to the experience. Also, I think I have to admit I'm a sucker for shiny graphics. The combination of that smooth 60fps and the shiny graphics just has a wow factor that PS4 basically never had for me. I got a ps4 at launch and the jump from ps3 wasn't particularly impressive at the time and the norm being 30fps felt rubbish right from the start.

I'm genuinely looking forward to playing a bunch of games that I've had zero interest in for the past few years thanks to the new hardware. I feel like this is the gen when HD console gaming has finally matured, no more gameplay ruining 30fps (or worse) performance (unless you choose it) and graphics that are consistently stunning to look at.

Sony's CES press conference is on at the moment. They've just talked about Gran Turismo: The Movie

...

Fuck me. Games companies are just as bad at introducing movies as they are at games.

I can almost understand bullshit logo only game "teasers" and terrible no-gameplay CG trailers for games coming out next decade because you're trying to convince me to buy your console and not your competitors to play the latest CoD now and than be ready for when these things do come out.

This is one minute long and I still skipped through it because it's just dull. A bunch of talking heads over a little undramatic car footage. They tell me it will be exciting. And that there will be a love story. And that there will be thumping music. But... just show it. Why bother? Will this still more tickets when it's released. Just wait and get people pumped. Take a leaf out of film studios book and shut up until you've got a trailer.

That intro is awful. "we've filmed some stuff and realise it's a bit shit, so can't show a trailer as it will tank the movie. Here are some people you might know with some generic descriptions of every film ever. With cars. Lets start with some sound effects to make you nostalgic......."

And a movie "made for the cinema". Novel idea.

Just a terrible, terrible first look

That's a bit unfair. This kind of "sneak peek" is common in the movie industry. And they've barely finished filming so it's a bit soon to have a proper trailer.

And have you missed the last 2 years where there were films released to streaming instead of cinema? It was a bit of a thing, with some pushing back against streaming by saying it's made for cinema.

True, maybe I was being a bit snarky. And in the days when trailers get killed for showing stuff that doesn't make the final film, it kind of makes sense. But doesn't take away from the fact that showed nothing even vaguely interesting.

Repair shops are claiming that PS5 consolesplaced in a vertical position could be irreparably damaged by a design flaw with their cooling system, despite the console being marketed for use either vertically or horizontally. This is caused by the liquid metal that is used in the cooling system becoming out of position due to the forces of gravity.

How vertical PS5 consoles can become damaged through a design flaw

The PS5 console uses a liquid metal cooling system for the APU. In most consoles, the APU and its cooling system will be pressed too tightly together for gravity to be a problem, and most of the 30 million PS5 owners will never have this issue. However, in PS5 consoles where the seal has been damaged, the metal can become uneven or even spill over time when the console is stored vertically, affecting the efficiency of the cooling system.

If the cooling system has been affected, players could get noisy fans and unexpected shutdowns as the console overheats. However, Wololo has compiled reports from several hardware experts that claim the liquid metal can even spill onto other components and can cause short circuits, effectively killing the motherboard.

With hardware prices predicted to rise, players would hope Sony could fix this issue soon. We have reached out to Sony for a comment but they had not replied at the time of publication.

The actual source:

I don’t think it’s a startling revelation or a unique design flaw that if the PS5’s coolant escapes, the console will stop working. It’s not a “design flaw” that they chose to use a liquid metal* thermal material. It has been designed for.

*iOS still wants to capitalise Liquid Metal automatically, years after Apple’s relationship with that company ended.

I have my launch PS5 vertical and feel like I may have that issue. It's not noisy or anything but when I first played God of War Ragnarok it shut down completely without warning, just off, no signal. It wouldn't turn back on via the controller or the console's power button until I switched it all off at the mains. Probably happened about half a dozen times over a 24 hour period.

I took the side panels off and gave it a thorough dusting which that coincided with a few patches to Ragnarok that explicitly mentioned fixes to unexpected crashes. Everything worked great after so I thought that was it but today, again in Ragnarok, I played for about an hour and a half and had another of the same crashes.

I guess it could be that the thermal stuff has weakened over time. I have barely played any PS5 games to tax the machine, just Yakuza and Street Fighter this year until Ragnarok. Not had the issue with anything else yet but I hope it doesn't affect Street Fighter 6, I don't want folk thinking I'm quitting matches in a huff.

The PS5 displays a message and shuts down if it overheats. If you’re not seeing that it’s probably a different problem.

Missed Sifu in that, and it’s not in the sale.

Sifu is in the second wave that's been added to the Jan sale.

PS+ is on sale, but as I'm an Extra member I can't buy a Essential Membership.

Yeah I thought it was unusual. It's only happened with this one game so far. Other instances I've heard about were with Ragnarok too but it seems pretty rare.
