PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Wasn't sure where to post this, but it might be worth checking your e-mail as Sony have sent me a 10% off code for the Store; it was under the Promotions tab on Gmail. No idea how widespread the promotion is.

As far as I can tell the only restriction is that you can't use it on subscriptions, so a pre-order should be fine. Usually I default to buying discs for new games as they're considerably cheaper, but I'll probably jump on RE4 as that's £55 digitally. The discount should apply to everything in your cart, although I don't think you can pre-order multiple items in one transaction.

I'm getting new much faster broadband soon. Does the PS5/PSN eat up all available bandwidth for everyone, or is it throttled to a max speed?

Kinda hoping I can watch a huge game download in a couple of minutes.

It's difficult to tell since it doesn't actually tell you how fast it's downloading something. If it helps it definitely feels loads faster than PSN downloads used to be for my on PS4 and definitely faster than I'm currently getting on my Series X. YMMV obviously

It can max out my 1Gbps connection. Depends on your router, though. Mine is WiFi 6.

Congrats! You literally did this to prove me wrong right 😂

As if! 😂

I’ve been saying for months I was going to get one, but was going to wait for a redesign. I caved! I can always swap it out for a slim if they release one.

I suppose I should ask a few questions then...

Which games should I be looking at? Demon's Souls is on my list and I've already played most of the PS4 crossover stuff like God of War, Spiderman, etc, so what else is there?

What's the PS version of Gamepass/Gold? I've heard of Plus, but which tier is best and what's the cheapest way of getting it?

Plus any other good advice you think I should know. Thanks!

PS Plus Extra will get you Returnal, Miles Moralis, Demons Souls, Ghost of Tshushima Directors Cut and a whole bunch of others

I think the PS5 must-haves, if the cross-over stuff isn't appealing (although everything pre- God of War from Sony is a free next-gen upgrade, I think? So perhaps worth downloading for a look at least, and they're good upgrades) are Demon's Souls and Returnal. They are properly great, great looking, great to play, real next-gen feel (even if a pedant would point out DS is a PS3 game, I don't think it feels like that at all.)

Astro's Playroom is also essential, but it comes pre-installed on the PS5 anyway. Ratchet & Clank, if that appeals?

PS Plus Essential is the Games with Gold tier, you need it for online and get a couple of free games a month. It is not the trash fire that Games with Gold is.

PS Plus Extra has the subscription Games Catalog. It's not bad! The various flavours of Sony website, Sony app and on-console store all have varying UIs of terrible construction and inconsistent ways to "purchase" or download the titles, and it's not always easy to know you're getting the PS5 one or the PS4 one or whatever. But as an offering it's not bad. Not as good as Game Pass is.

PS Plus Premium is the one where they also offer PS3, PS Vita, PSP, PS2, PS1 titles, and it seems like everyone unanimously think it's shit.

I also finally picked up a PS5 over the weekend so interested in the same stuff.

I barely had a PS4 so I've started with the remastered Spider-Man and have ordered Demon Souls. I then want to play God of War before playing Ragnarok, and keen to fit in Last of Us Part 1 at some point too.

Had forgotten about Returnal as well - will add that to the list!

Thanks all. PS Plus Extra as a starting point it is then. That should keep me going for a good while. Is there a cheap way of doing it, such as buying cards from CDKeys, like I did for Gamepass?

Your router should say, this is my PS5 a few mins ago - hardwired to a 1Gig connection:

Pretty much maxes out the connection, but then almost all services do these days other than Nintendo.

Cross-posting from the PS+ thread so that people are aware.

We also wanted to provide an update on the PlayStation Plus Collection that has been offered as a benefit to PlayStation Plus members on PS5 since 2020. On May 9 the PlayStation Plus Collection will no longer be offered. If you haven't redeemed the titles in this collection yet, you can still do so until May 9, which will enable you to access those titles even after this date for as long as you remain a PlayStation Plus member.

For those new to PS, once you have PS Plus don’t forget to add the monthly games to your collection each month, you don’t need to download them. Once added they’re yours to keep/play as long as you’re subscribed.

From the link above:

PlayStation Plus members have until Monday February 6 to add Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Fallout 76 and Axiom Verge 2 to their game library.

Same here. As long as you're still subscribed and have them added to your library you can redownload them after that date but it is a bit of a kick for new adopters. Will be going through the list later (I know it's not until May but I'll forget by then!).

Just had an email saying the PS Plus Collection will be removed from 9th May. They were pushing that as part of the new PS Plus service so seems odd to retire it so soon.

To be fair it’s been there since ps5 launch.

To be clear, the Plus Collection was a selection of highly-rated PS4 games available for Plus members to claim from the launch of the PS5. The new Plus tiers introduced the Game Catalogue, which is more of a rolling offering where games will swap in and out over time, and that isn't going anywhere as far as we know.

Not sure if you were confusing the two, but it would be fairly easy to do so. Which is likely part of the reason they're retiring the Plus Collection.

I’m sure there are people wanting a PS5 that haven’t been able to get one yet, so I assume they are confident the supply issues will all be fixed before the beginning of May. Otherwise this is a pretty shitty thing to do.

All the stuff on PS Plus Premium/Extra - Returnal is god tier, loads more on there.

My favourite PS5 game to date other than Returnal, which is so far my favourite game this gen, is The Last Os Us Part 1. I’ve played the PS3 original, and the PS4 remaster (which you get with PS Plus) but Part 1 blows them out the water. It’s comfortably the best looking game I’ve ever seen and it plays like a dream. It’s expensive but if you want to properly treat yourself get that.

My other big recommendation from the Extra catalogue is Defense Grid 2 (DG2). I’ve played it on Xbox, and PS5 and I’ve recently bought it for PC to play on Steam Deck. It’s the best tower defence game of all time and a bit of a hidden gem in that catalogue. It won’t wow you graphically but it’s one of the best games you will ever play.

Horizon Forbidden West is great, as long as you were fully invested in the world and story of the original. Despite Alloy's persistence in talking all the fucking time and generally being a bit of pain in the arse, the visuals and gameplay are really awesome.

It has some of the best facial animation I've ever seen - properly good stuff.

However, I never finished the thing as I flogged my PS5 a while back and am now waiting long years before it hits the PC...
