PlayStation 5 - Next gen is here!

Both things that I'm sure will improve with future firmware updates. Sekiro on the PS5 runs better than the XSX (lower quality image due to checkerboarding but a solid 60fps). It may just be Ubisoft, as another Ass Creed game (Unity has big framerate drops) also has issues with PS5 BC.

Because it's a different game.

But its an older game. The reply above mentioned older games cant. So how can GoT be basically the same but an even older game is lighting fast on xbox?

Genuine question. Im not tech savvy and it seems odd.

Maybe we will see some load time footage in the coming hours. The fact that no review mentioned it for BC is a wee bit perplexing.

Yeah, I'd be interested to see a more comprehensive breakdown; is Tsushima just an outlier, here? An awful lot of the commentary I've seen on Series X/S has praised massively improved loading times on e.g. Forza, Sekiro, so the 'no backward-compatible games take advantage of either console's load times' argument initially offered rings more than a little false.

Older games cant benefit from the new drives in either system, as they aren't designed to use them. The most they can do is run at essentially full SSD speeds. Still faster, but not anyway near as fast as having access to direct storage, or whatever sony calls their version of it

Odd. Suppose they emulate or use legacy drivers from the old system when accessing disks? Just seems odd. When I put a SSD in my PC it made a huge difference to everything - I would have expected the same of PS5.... If I was *really* sceptical is that Sony are using the fast load times to illustrate the benefit of playing  PS5 games over PS4 games? For example I'm guessing there is nothing stopping you buying a PS4 version of a game cheaper and then running it through BC to play and saving yourself some money perhaps? If you weren't that bothered about graphics.

Difficult one BC really. It kind of cannibalises PS5 games sales in some respect if not handled carefully. Kind of why I like MS's approach with this. Buy it and run it where you want - you'll get the best experience that your hardware can support.

I expect Sony will be doing some patching at some point. Just a shame they couldn't have showcased PS4 games (at least first party titles) loading as quickly as PS5 games do.

You will possibly find the same last gen games load times are comparitively similar on PS5 & XSX without patches.

I have to ask though what do you consider a true next gen game?

Ps5 exclusive built specifically for the PS5 I suppose.  I guess I'm looking for that line in the sand that says this game is built for PS5 from the ground up and seeing what it can do.  The whole nextgen starts here ethos.

For my money Drivceclub is still the best racing game of the generation (and that is after playing another hour of FH4 just last night). It may not have killed anything (nor would I wish it too to be honest) but once it got going after the rocky start it was a properly brilliant game to play, especially with the rllmuk league. Fond memories.

RIP Driveclub :( Taken too soon.

Indeed. Although DC and FH series are very different beasts. DC is more like Project Gotham Racing than anything else. Especially with city circuits on the last few packs. Not enough city circuit based racers these days sadly. Still pining for a Project Gotham update from somewhere. Seems driving games are no long in vogue anymore. :(

Wonder if DC will get an update to 60fps? That would be cool. There is a distinct lack of drivers like DriveClub on the PS this. They haven't even announced anything other than GT7 which is more sim-like anyway. Guess they are leaving it to the third parties this time around.

How does the witcher load instantly on xbox series x then?

It only takes 6 seconds on an ssd, the first two screens, the 1st is an nvme drive similar to whats in the consoles, the 2nd is a a regular ssd. It cant use the actual speed of the nvme as it doesnt know how essentially. Thats why the direct storage api is going to be so good!

So the PS5 beats Xbox at the only thing it had for launch

How so? XSX has shorter load times on some BC titles than PS5 when it was meant to be the other way around:

https://www.gamespot.com/videos/playstation-5-vs-xbox-series-x-load-times-comparison-or-next-gen-load-times-comparison/2300-6454169/

It looks like some BC games are maintaining 60fps slightly better on PS5 than XSX because they are running at a lower resolution. The same thing sometimes happened with One X games Vs PS4 Pro games - the Pro version would occasionally run a bit smoother because they were pushing resolution harder on the One X.

I just never find this to be a valid argument of old gen vs next gen at all. Also i'm not sure how many new game engines are available to make a "true next gen game" just yet.

Also games are usually developed to be scalable, the PS5 version of Spiderman cannot run on the PS4 because it doesn't have the hardware to do so, so this reasoning does make it a next gen game. To break it down further, the PS5 and XSX are not nearly as powerful as the most powerful gaming PC you can build but nobody makes exclusive games for the PC's with those capabilities. So what is next gen? It is quite simply more powerful hardware than last gen.

Of course in time we will see games built from the ground up for the PS5 but whilst there are 115 million PS4's out there, Sony will be happy that there is a PS4 scaled version of Spiderman in order to sell it to those owners not able or prepared to upgrade just yet. This is exactly the reason Cyberpunk 2077 is delayed, they are struggling to make the game playable on current gen but they obviously don't want to miss out on the sales that those old systems will offer. What gen is Cyberpunk 2077, old gen or next gen?

Lastly going by your definition of a "true next gen game" - it would be Astro's Playroom (but even that will most likely be using Astrobot's PS4 game engine). Then if that fits your catrgorising method ask yourself what looks more impressive visually, Astro's Playroom "true next gen" or Spiderman Miles Morales PS5.

I think that however MS intend to play the long game, they surely know that the market (by which I meant the media as well as customers) will always want at least something exclusive at launch - so to have nothing is definitely going to hurt and the PS5 is going to get a lot of coverage off the back of what they've got (even Bugsnax and Destruction Allstars).

Not that I have any stake in the game though, as the PS5 hasn't currently got anything I'm interested in either, plus I've always properly hated their controllers anyway. At least they've made it more Xbox-shaped now, so it'll be more comfortable in the hand I guess.

The Dual Shock 4 was literally Xbox 360 pad shaped.

Seriously? By what, twenty seconds at most? They both load pretty quickly. You'd never notice it if they weren't right next to each other.

20 seconds is a big difference.

While promising a glimpse of the future, Astro's Playroom is a gloriously old-fashioned thing at heart, a characterful, character-driven platformer that has been built to showcase a particular piece of hardware. So often that's where magic in video games happens, and that's most certainly the case here. On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer. Combined with the hardware it's bundled on, it's something very special indeed - and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age.

That's funny. I mean the last actual launch title we had was what BotW....somebody over at EG has a short memory or just likes a bit of hyperbole.

I'm not saying Astro is bad, I'm just willing to bet a bollock it's not at BotW level, or Halo level etc

Thanks I guess for editing the pictures in, I hope you just googled it and didn't go and take them yourself.

I did just go and hold the DS4 before posting and the key difference for me is in the grips, which are longer and further apart as you have visibly demonstrated. I just find the Xbox pad much more comfortable (and prefer the asymmetrical sticks).

I think the PS5 will be a great machine though and as I've said before, Sony first-party games tend to have better art direction than Xbox titles so I may well get over the pad discomfort down the line and join the club.

Speaking of which.....

I'm 2 mins in and it looks amazing

Pleased BC is better than expected...

But this ... this is something else - reading the 60fps no RT VS 30fps with RT comments before seeing this video, I was 60FPS YEAH BABY. Now it's RT all the way, just amazing.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you (or the tech - very possible :) ) I don't think you are right on that. PS5 has the boost capability in BC mode allowing it to use the extra resources to bump up frame rates, etc... God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, etc... have already have had the devs go on record to state the games run with improved performance and I don't think these are the proper "next-gen patches", it's just BC mode beefing them up as far as I'm aware.

https://www.pushsquare.com/guides/ps5-game-boost-all-major-ps4-game-improvements

Correct, PS5 just switches in to its PS4 Pro or PS4 compatibility mode to play unpatched PS4 games (whichever the game supports) and it will apply a clock speed boost. PS4 games with PS5 “upgrades” are just downloading the native PS5 version of the game.

Yep I was just thinking I love how Spider-Man feels on a base PS4, it never feels sluggish so I might as well go super shiny RT all the way on PS5. However, do I need to even avoid trying the performance mode in case it spoils the RT mode

Now the embargo is up have any outlets tested PSVR performance.

In light of the great BC job they have done surely PSVR is going to see a pretty big boost

I read something a while back saying it will have no effect on VR as they didn’t run in dynamic res or variable frame rates so boost mode wouldn’t make any difference.

Google :)

Yeah I mean there are differences, Bungie helped design the DS4 and i'd imagine thats why it was very Xbox like, designed more for FPS games. It's the reason I was very drawn to the DS4 over XB1 controller, I loved the 360 pad and I could tell the DS4 was more of a successor to that than the XB1 pad. Everything minus the asymmetrical sticks that is.

Also I do appreciate it's very subjective, what works for one and all that.
