Oculus Quest

The state of that fucking headstrap! All the weight will, again, be at the front. So it's just like the original Quest. I'll stick to my Rift S and then go for something with real build quality that takes basic ergonomics into account.

Yep. Anyone who's tried a Go for an extended period of time is going to be worried about that strap!

I went for the 64gb version. I had a 128gb Quest and never came close to filling it. And I had a ton of stuff installed.

Looking forward to seeing the strap alternatives for this. No way am I paying the prices Oculus are asking. Would rather have a halo strap for less than what they are asking.

Just been playing the DrBeef port of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and it's incredible, like really really impressive. He also did the Quake (1 & 2) and Half Life ports. This is the most modern game that he has got up and running and I'd highly recommend to try it, and it won't cost you anything (well not to give it a go).

Easiest way to install is via sidequest, this gives you the engine plus the demo of the game (so the first two levels). If you want to play the rest then you just need to buy it (on steam for example at £3.99) and copy those files over via sidequest. There is even an HD mode out there to make it look even cripser.

Additionally he claims to be close to releasing a port of Doom 3, so there is that to look forward to as well if you are a fan.

Ive pre-ordered one.  That £299 price point is too tempting.

Ive seen a few reviews and I'm cancelling my pre-order.  I'm going to hold out for a PC VR oriented PC headset I think, I know this is unlikely to come from Oculus/Facebook but so be it.

What did you read that put you off? Deciding whether to upgrade myself from the original Quest. Although I feel there's life left in it, they're gonna be badly devalued once the £300 unit hits.

I’m not keen on the direction Facebook is going with VR although I can see why and with a great price point and minimal faff VR is the way to take it mainstream.  I would prefer PC powered VR to provide the experiences I’d like to see like Half life Alyx and Flight simulator, Project Cars and other more demanding VR software.  Don’t get me wrong I’ll still play the less demanding VR games and enjoy them and Native Quest software being wireless is a game changer for VR.  I’m likely to play any multi platform VR with my PC rather than native Quest games as it will always look better.  Look at the difference between the Quest version of Onward and PC.  (I understand that Quest 2 increased power may close the gap)

You can still play PC VR games using a Quest though. In fact you can play a bunch of them wirelessly. :)

Yes I was going to do that but I currently use an original Vive with a wireless adaptor, I'm not sure a Quest would improve on that experience due to the lower HZ and wireless compression issues?  Also if Facebook provided their own solution for wireless through PC I would of been more convinced.  The current hack using VD can be a bit hit and miss in terms of compatibility & performance I've heard

I'm really torn by this. That strap looks like a regression (as pointed out in the review) and the white... not keen. But if I didn't already have a Quest I would bite.

Here's a question. I've tried to play Alyx using Virtual Desktop from my laptop and although it works it's slows down and jerks around during combat. Would Quest 2 improve this or is it the PC end that's the problem?

Great review and detailed specs. Happy to find out the lenses are the same so my prescriptions ones can be brought across:

That’s great news, prescription lenses for it were almost as good as the leap from wires to no wires

I only own an original Rift. Does Oculus Link not just work with Steam games then? Why does it need to run through virtual desktop?

I was thinking of upgrading to this system for the much higher resolution but if playing Steam VR is a faff then I'll hold fire.

I tried Link with Alyx and never got the thing to work so I switched to Virtual Desktop. From what I hear there's very little difference between the two set ups, many people seem to prefer Virtual D because it's untethered. I think my issues are more to do with my PC (or wifi).

I hate the facebook integration.  Locking it to facebook accounts is inevitable but totally puts me off.

But the quest is the best bit of VR hardware we've seen hands down so a lighter,  cheaper higher resolution version!?  I'm in,  damn you facebook.

By all means reject it because of facebook but don't reject it because you don't think the quest is good. It pisses on everything else.

Why? Because you can do everything with it and so much more easily. Play some beat saber at your mates house. Play half life alyx in your garden wirelessly or plug in with ONE usb cable and play at your desktop,  no base stations,  no faff. It's everything vr needs right now. Cheap,  easy,  accessible.

As soon as someone who's not fb makes something comparable I'm all over it,  but for now they've managed to keep me on board.

I’ve not looked into it much yet, but I wonder if it’s worth selling my Rift S and getting the new Quest 2.

A wireless headset would certainly get more use and Oculus seem to have given up bringing new features to the Rift S

I think it's definitely worth it, oculus are giving up on the Rift as a concept.
