Oculus Quest

Had a quick play with mine and fairly impressed so far, it feels smaller somehow than the quest 1? Is it just my imagination?

Strap seems ok on my big bonce, so will see how it fairs over time.

Definitely sharper image and the controller's sit nicer in the hand and feel better quality. I found the audio on mine a little tinny sounding so far, but I've only done a few tests so need to try a bit more.

Is 90Hz only in the main home area? I enable in dev features but not sure it carries into games just yet?

The 1m charging cable is a pain, not even long enough to charge it on a unit with the plug in the wall!

Seems sharper, if less vibrant than the quest 1. General speed of the unit and the tracking of the controllers definitely seems better though.

But fuck me it hurts my face. The Quest 1 wasn't much better, but this feels like there is nowhere to comfortable take the weight - so it just cuts into your forehead/brow.... The PSVR is soooo much more comfortable to use.

I've played this for about 2 hours tonight, and haven't found it to be notably uncomfortable. And that's with the pauper strap. I do have a massive swede though, if that's useful in this case.

I set up a Plex server on my PC for watching on Bigscreen Beta. If I could get my 5.1 system involved in the audio, going back to the cinema would be a very hard sell.

The SDE is just non-existent to my eyes here, and the shows/films you're watching look great.

Got a little queasy on a rollercoaster, but that was me being Billy Big Bollocks a little too quick.

Tomorrow's To-Do list: Sidequest, Custom Beat Saber tracks and possibly getting Google Earth to work via Virtual Desktop.

Absolutely zero buyer's remorse here.

Previously had a CV1 but not used it for a couple of years so was interested in the Quest2 to see what progress has been made in VR. Quality of the screen is much better but I'm glad I bought the replacement strap as the one it comes with is garbage.

Had to migrate my Oculus account with all my previous purchases to a Facebook one just to use the damn thing so I setup a new account using my real name (I've never had a Facebook account previously) and went through and changed all my privacy settings to 'Only Me', because why the fuck not. My new Facebook account got banned within 10 minutes. Now its being reviewed and I can't use my Oculus in the meantime which is the most shitty user experience ever.

EDIT: Apparently they have already reviewed this decision and "It can't be reversed". So I've lost all my previous purchases. Be warned.

That sounds absolutely horrific. I've been considering different PCVR headsets this week and hearing accounts like this have put me right off any Oculus product.

I have the first Quest, fucking love it. Superb games in standalone but it works in Link for me perfectly. Absolutely incredible.

Anyway, I'm going to get the Virtual Boy emulator running today. I had a VB in the mid 90s (and boy should I have kept that on the qt, my mates slaughtered me about it in front of potential lady friends on many an occasion. "oh you going off with Mac?, ask him to show you Mario on his 3D goggles") Made me shrivel every time.

Looking forward to finally finishing Red Alarm and Wario.

This is fucking terrible :( if i didn't find that i had an old Facebook account lying around i wouldn't have got a quest 2 in light of this very real problem. Its a shame because the headset itself is great quality and for me is now "sharp enough" for VR (previous CV1 owner).

Really don't like the controllers for fitness/boxing based games. Don't sit right in my hands when throwing punches and can't make a good fist like with the previous ones.

They are fine for everything else.

Will need to sideload BMFN again and get my custom songs back for Beat Sabre. I already had a developer account on previous quest but I don't see an option to enable unknown sources like quest 1.

I'm hoping I can just plug it in and it will be fine.

You'll need to enable Dev mode on the new headset in the Oculus app, but it's easy enough.

I've sideloaded some fun stuff. Crisis Vrigade is excellent, looking forward to trying the rest. BUT... BMBF isn't updated for the current version of Beat Saber yet. So no custom songs for the moment.

I've heard tell of a Sidequest launcher that will give my 'Unknown Sources' apps a places to live freely, with icons and such. Anyone know what it's called?

Got one of these yesterday and have been blown away by how good it is. I had an Acer WMR headset that I sold a couple of weeks ago, and this thing is a massive upgrade in every way. No screen door effect from what I can see, and found it a lot more comfortable to wear, even without the fancy strap. Works really well with Virtual Desktop over WiFi as well. Being able to play PC VR untethered is a game changer. Only problem i'm having now is getting Oculus PC games to run through Virtual Desktop. I have Revive installed but the games seem to run on a big screen rather than in full VR. I don't know if you can't run Oculus games that way or i've set it up wrong, will have to take a closer look when i get home.

Is there any difference in use between this one and the official cable apart from the extra length of the official one (and the fact the official one is optical)? Is this one fast enough for the Quest 2 for all use purposes?

I've had a few different cables for testing, and I find that most of them work OK when plugged directly into your PC. The official one seems more stable, so I get little to no drop outs/stutters, and it works well with a 5m active USB extension cable. It is also very quick to bring up the PC Oculus dashboard when first connecting.

The 3rd party cables have a longer delay when first connecting, sometimes needing to be unplugged/replugged to get the dashboard to appear. All of them have issues with extension cables, either not working at all or dropping the speed down to USB 2.0. My favourite of them was the Amavision 5m cable, which gave me slightly faster speeds than the official one when running the USB test. Sadly it didn't like my extension cable or I would've kept it (Will probably stick it in the trading folder soon if anyone's after one).

Of course, YMMV - I think it's very dependant on your PC setup. I have an older Asus mobo with an onboard USB C port, plus some onboard USB 3.0 ports and a budget PCI USB 3.0 card. I think some of my issues could be resolved by getting a decent USB 3.0 card such as the Startech ones.

Are you launching them from the Virtual Desktop menu? You have to either do that or right-click on the VD Streamer icon and choose Inject Game. You can also create customs shortcuts for games that aren't in your Oculus games list.

Thanks for the tip, will give that a go. I was launching them through Revive.

Do i need both the store version and the sideloaded version of Virtual Desktop to play PCVR games wirelessly on the Quest 2? I wasn't going to bother with sideload if i could help it.

Yeah you need both. The one on sidequest is a plugin that enables the wireless stuff. Well worth doing!

Did you kick up a fuss on twitter (do facebook have twitter?) This seems like the sort of bullshit a Kotaku or perhaps a Jim Sterling would pick up on

Wow, so when I set this up later I have to migrate the account to Facebook and not create a new one, got it.

For Oculus Quest 2:

Quest 2 requires everyone to use a Facebook account to log in.

If you are an existing Oculus user and have an Oculus account, you will have the option to log in with your Oculus account and merge your Facebook and Oculus accounts.

When you log in with a Facebook account, you can still create or keep your VR profile. So you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR.

For previous generation Oculus devices, including Rift, Go and Samsung Gear VR:

Everyone using a previous generation Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.

If you are an existing Oculus user and have an Oculus account, you will have the option to log in with your Oculus account and merge your Facebook and Oculus accounts. You can also choose not to merge your accounts and continue using your Oculus account for two years.

Starting in January 2023:

We will end support for Oculus accounts.

If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account.

We will take steps to allow you to continue using content you have purchased, although some games and apps may no longer work. This could be because they require a Facebook account or because a developer has chosen to no longer support the app or game you have purchased.

Regarding some unlucky people getting their accounts banned, assuming they're not for actual good reasons I expect that Facebook will have to give them access back en masse in a few days, as otherwise they'll be facing a PR disaster.

As well as what jonbd said - you don't get any messing around with two icons to worry about or anything like that. It's all pretty straightforward, just be sure to buy VD on the Quest store and not the main Oculus one as it's a different version.

Thanks, i'll give it a go later. Will probably sell my Rift S now if i can get the wireless stuff working :)
