I wondered that as well. Could be the camera picking up screen refresh now and again.

It looks like it doesn't handle dense patterns of dots or stripes without horizontal banding. Bit of an oversight, unless this isn't a final production model. Shame really, as it's quite a nice screen.

Looks like you're right:

Edit: good lord, The Verge is still full of shit about everything.

The Playdate’s screen sounds old-school, but it looks great in person. It’s a truly 1-bit black-and-white display with no backlighting whatsoever, which gives it a deliberate, minimalist feel. The closest comparison I can make is to the original Pebble smartwatch, which also used a similar Memory LCD panel from Sharp, but it’s much bigger at 2.7 inches diagonal and is all the better for the lack of cheap-feeling backlight.

Backlights are "cheap-feeling" now? Pull the other one.

Any suggestions for a better name than PlayDate?

My attempt: The Wizzle-Woz®

Tagline: I'd buy that for a dollar! ($150)

So because of Playdate, Playdate are now known as Playdate Pop Up.

Confused?

How on earth did this get the cover of Edge?

The same way The Verge wrote a fawning article about it and how great it is that you can't see the screen in the dark without mentioning the gameboy once. It's catnip to a certain type of person, those people include tech journalists and beard-stroking game journalists.

Speaking of Lib Dems, they actually are a bit like that Change UK mob, remember all the media they got because the weird people that are political journalists got excited? This will probably sell better mind you.

A monochrome handheld with no games announced in 2019 for £150

How can it not fail?

It’s not about failure or success!

It's about the form factor, limited graphics, monochrome display, funky controls.

And having engaging, entertaining games, right? Right?

It's not relevant. That is videogame bubble speak. Oh my god! They've dared to not have a backlight! Listen to yourself. That's the same old Rllmuk way.

And me!

I think this thing looks great - I love that Japanese video above. But then I do wonder what I’m the hell I’d be thinking to drop 150 bones on it.

Teenage Engineering.

Their synths cost an absolute packet, do essentially nothing that can't be done on a smartphone, but the build and feel has made them objets d'art that people just want.

  • 1 year later...

I was thinking about this earlier in the week. Wouldn’t be the first time Edge has given big features and covers to vapourware.

I can’t see how this will work in the current climate. It’s the very epitome of a luxury item at a time where money will be tighter.

Actual luxury items are recession-proof aren’t they? People who buy luxury goods aren’t affected as much by crises. Sony actually expect to sell more PS5s because of COVID.

I’m still really intrigued by this and looking forward to it. Especially after the very dull and conservative next-gen hardware from Microsoft and Sony. I wouldn’t be surprised if they announce it’s slipped since the factory closed for COVID though.
