been playing this loads, really enjoyed playing to get the win on each track. then been trying to move up the leaderboards, had some tips from here/Donut and went a bit faster, it was fun, but it got a bit frustrating as i can't get the last corner right at all. then switched back to normal steering and using the d-pad - could take the last corner better like this but was slightly slower round the rest of the track and it makes slipstreaming harder, but the car would suddenly slow down for no apparent reason - turns out this was accidentally pressing down on the d-pad (pro controller) which acts as the brake! so now using split joycons. still unsurprisingly behind Donut :D the last corner is probably where i'm losing most of the time. anyway, this was my first time playing it, great game and amazing port by M2.

I've never liked Outrun. (1 anyway, 2+ is a fucking masterpiece)

But this version absolutely convinced me.

What's the reason for that? Is it better than Cannonball's emulation?

Edit: for the sake of £4 I gave it a go. Holy shit, what a conversion.  It looks just like emulation but you can feel how they absolutely nailed the handling from the first turn.  Extra music and car enhancements as well.  Bargain.

I’ve switched to the default view (having previously been using the next zoomed out view) and shave another second off my time!  Might have just been a coincidence of course.

3:13.46 now, rank 283. Would love to get into the top 100, but guessing would need a 3:11 for that.

Just picked up Outrun for my Switch... ended up costing me £3.52(!). Think I had some gold points I'd got from somewhere which brought the price down further. Look forward to having a blast on this tonight! :)

Does anyone else find normal steering significantly worse for Acropolis? Using arcade steering it’s super easy to get it round the hairpin but with normal it’s like there’s a powerful magnet on the outside of the track and the car just won’t turn in.

Holiday time! Got some time in the hotel room today and have figured out a few things. Focusing on taking corners as tightly as possible seems to have taken me up a good notch, quite a few of my first laps are 39.09 now.

Top 6 looks like this:-

“ACE”

As I was posting the image I was thinking ffs, I don’t even know how that started but it’s always been my arcade name, my excuse is it’s quick to enter and my name is Jason so it’s kinda like Jase :)

Yes Postino! I guess now we’re headed for the 3:09s, after thinking it wouldn’t be manageable I’ve done a couple of 37.65 laps so it’s on the cards after all.

Is there a way to have the background music playing continuously so that it doesn't just come on for a few seconds then fade out every time you cross a checkpoint? It's probably a quirk of the original game, but it's a bit jarring. I might just listen to music while I'm playing it with the sound off altogether.

I don’t think so, no. I found it really jarring myself at first too, to the point where I thought it was broken.

Yeah, that was my first impression too. Surely, as an arcade game, it would be blasting out tunes constantly to draw attention from the other cabs?

It's odd these days but I'm sure it's authentic.

This :) I remember finding this a bit odd when I played the 32X and arcade versions through emulators, but was just the way the music worked in the original game.

I actually like it, puts the emphasis on your driving and passing cars (of which the SFX are still so lovely) and just hearing some cool music at intervals.

I don't really understand this game.

I've come 1st place on the beginner's track playing on normal and am top of the (in-game leaderboard). I'm trying to do the same thing on the intermediate track, however, and am learning the course, but I haven't yet been able to actually complete a full 5 lap race because midway through the final lap I typically run out of time and get the game over screen. Am I racing the other cars or the clock? Is it possible to beat the clock in any position less than first? Normally when I run out of time I'm in third or fourth place.

The intermediate track is, I find, the hardest. Keep at it, it’s possible to beat the clock - many of the corners can be taken without releasing the accelerator and others that require slowing down don’t need you to lift off completely - if you flutter the glass you’ll get the same turning circle without losing speed.

Cheers. I managed it shortly after posting that, typically, then did the same on the last track after a few goes.

I think I'll leave it there, though. Apart from paring down my lap times, which doesn't really appeal to me, there doesn't seem to be much else to do, unfortunately. Grand Prix mode feels like a bit of a slog, especially against the infallible AI opponents, and I tried a few times last night to get an online game but there was nothing going.

I imagine the simplicity of it will make it a decent couch multi game, so I'll save it for when I've got mates round. I've had my £2.50's worth, so I'm not too bothered, although I do think that this is another case of nostalgia fuelling the hype.

Bought this in the sale recently (despite the fact that I already own it on 4 systems I wasn't in a big hurry to get it due to being swamped with unplayed games).

Unless it's just me, I guess it's probably how the arcade game was but I find the camera a bit too jumpy while steering. When I press the brake the camera seems to jump/change position slightly and I find it kind of an unpleasant sensation. I checked the 32x and ps2 versions and they don't do it at all.

32x version is still my favourite. I like the stockcars.

Having never played the original I don’t think that did anything for me. I enjoyed the simplicity of it. It’s not a cluttered car collectation experience. You might say it has nostalgia appeal because of the style of racer that it is but all I know is racing games stopped appealing to me after the PS2 era and Virtua Racing has still got it (whatever ‘it’ is).

Despite having the means at my disposal for some time (an 8bitdo bluetooth adapter) I only tonight figured out how to pair my DualShock 4 with my Switch. The first thing I did? Load up Virtua Racing. I’ve always been suspicious that the joy cons, with their small analogue sticks which are prone to drift, were actually crap for racing games and, egged in by lacklustre performance in Hotshot Racing, I tried my hand at VR.

Despite having not played in months I was placing consistently in my own rankings - haven't set any PBs yet but the extra travel in the sticks is immediate and obvious.

I sense I might even be able to take first place on the intermediate course soon...

I've had this for a few years now. Love it. I just fired it up for what must be the first time in many, many months and for the life of me I can't remember if this has any rumble support. I'm playing using the Pro Controller if that makes any difference, can't see any option to turn it off or on in the menu etc. Feels strange playing a racing game without any rumble.
