Has there been any mention that M2 might patch the contrast/brightness issue? Looking at comparison shots it’s hugely impactful (for me at least) on what are wonderfully designed visuals.

I haven’t heard anything to that effect but there is a way to temporarily fix the contrast... unfortunately I don’t remember off the top of my head though! It was mentioned in the recent DF Retro video, something to do with toggling a setting in the menu.

I like the high high contrast though!

My best on Big Forest is a rather poor 3:18:87 - how are you guys getting into the 3:12s?!

The video replays don’t help much as can only view the top 50 and they’re waaaay faster, and searching online for tips just brings up loads of horse racing sites!

Do I need to change to manual to get those type of times?

Is it better to brake or to ease off the gas?

It’s really good fun regardless - I think I only played this once or twice in the arcades so missed out then.

I’m pretty crap too, but yes you’ll need to man(ual) up to get the better times. Remember to slipstream the other cars wherever possible too, you can get up to around 338 kph doing this.

There shouldn’t be any need to brake on Big Forest - the last couple of corners (the exit out of the long right hander after the bridge and the final turn) need you to get off the gas but all the others can be taken at full speed provided you hit the apexes just right.

Just bought :)

Me too. I've been waiting to get stuck into a decent arcade racer on the Switch and this looks great. Oh and its only £5.31 too - even better! :)

Shamefully its one of the few Sega arcade games I never played so looking forward to it.

My starting point was roughly similar and I’m down to the 3:15s now. Still not great but I’m pleased with myself!

I’m still using automatic so not necessary to switch to manual to start lopping some time off. I think the main thing for me was to learn which corners I could carry speed through. You can do the first few corners without lifting off if you get your lines right. And then on that long right handed you only have to lift off the accelerator a little bit to drift round it. The final corner I still need to work on, and I suspect that’s where I’m losing my time. But you can also pick up little bits of time by slipstreaming when you overtake.

It it just come down to practice really and soon enough you’ll find you’re bringing your times down.

Slipstreaming actually allows large chunks of time to be removed. Just look at the world record on big forest and see what the guy is doing thanks to slip streaming a dodgy collision detection.

As for the last corner well it looks like the best times start it out wide and then cut right in and only lift off a couple of quick times. They seem to maintain a good 300kph around that section.

I finally had a quick go at this, and it’s exactly as good as I remember, which probably means it’s better than my original mega drive copy if I managed to dig it out.

Did it always run so smoothly? The graphics themselves have stood up a lot better than I thought they would, definitely more attractive than a lot of the more detailed early 3D era stuff like on N64.

Finding the steering control a bit juddery, a bit stop-start. Playing with a Pro Controller,

doesn’t feel any different to using the left analogue stick. Analogue accelerate/brake works fine, but still feels quite a difficult game to control, TBH.

Change the steering from ‘‘normal’ to ‘arcade’ in the settings.

Really enjoying this but am I missing some hidden stick sensitivity option somewhere, playing in cockpit view and it’s twitchy as hell.  Not played older versions for ages so maybe it’s just like that

I also keep getting bad drift to the right, nothing wrong with my joycon on other games but it’s ruining this a bit for me - will be going full pelt when it just veers off aggressively

Am managing 3:17s despite these issues but would enjoy it so much more with smoother controls

Anyone else having anything like this?

Edit: just seem the posts above, tried Arcade and is better with Pro controller but in handheld now just barely even gets round corners and seems to slide off track.  Will stick with it and keep experimenting, love shaving tenths of my time :)

The game definitely auto-drifts your car to the right just as you reach the pit exit down the start/finish straight ... but I have also had a few weird issues with the car veering rapidly left or right ruining my lap. Never had drift on my joycons but this does seem to be cropping up as an issue. Doesn’t happen in big screen with my Pro pad so it’s either the game in handheld mode or the left joycon that’s at fault

Also just fired the game up in coinops7 on XBox and the game is basically chalk n cheese compared with the remaster on Switch - the emulated game has poor resolution and low draw distance, in comparison with Switch it’s almost unplayable.

Gradually been whittling my times down and I’m just clinging onto the top 200 on Beginner with 3:13 and a bit, but not managed a lap under 38.15 at all yet. It’s the last hairpin and more slipstreaming that are my best chances of improvement.

Absolutely brilliant remaster.

Yeah this is me - I know what you mean about the gradual drift to the right on the start straight but I’m also getting what you say, aggressive veering off out of nowhere

Having re familiarised myself nicley with this I decided to just now go manual. I'm not too sure if upchange speed / acceleration is better or if it's the extra few KPH that I seem to be getting but my times are dropping nicely.

Big Forest 128th with 3:12.75 and FL of 38:18

Bay Bridge 487th with 3:18.96 and FL of 38:71

Please please someone tell me that there's a easier way of comparing times other than people posting them up here? The (seemingly) lacking friends leaderboards seems so insane to me that I'm close to mailing M2 about it!!!

I didn’t get on with the arcade controls either. Was getting 3:22’s. When I switched to normal I’m down to 3:15.14.

i really need to practice the other courses. Yet to post a time on either.

Does anyone change their view?

Has anyone noticed that the clock isn’t very accurate / granular? I always seem to see the same handful of different lap times right down to 1/100th of a second every single race. I can often see 3 laps out of 5 with exactly the same lap time and there no way I’m consistent enough for that.

This doesn’t take away from how much fun the game is, but it does make me wonder how suitable it really is for hardcore rankings battles.

I use the view one out from the default and the Joy-con’s d-pad for steering. Does that make me weird?

The other thing I do is choke horribly, such as below.

But that green car gets in my way just before the finish line so often that there’s a good chance a better line would have ended in a collision anyway.
