I’m still pootling around taking my time with things and I’ve only just finished Raya Lucaria. I’ve been up the big lift and over to Volcano Manor, where I joined their weird cult, but I feel I’m skipping ahead a bit. Is this the right path or shall I go back and rinse Caelid first? Ranni’s quest seems to be pointing me in that direction.

Do whatever feels doable at the time. I didn't 'clear' Caelid til well after volcano Manor and the capital, but I think its manageable after you've reached Altus.

Is there some kind of strategy to beating those teleporting fuckers with a million swords in Elphael?

The multi-armed bastards at the low level bit?

They don't like holy damage.

Genuinely love walking in here to have a quick glimpse and still reading place names I've not heard of. I swear, you lot must be making them up. It can't be this big, surely?

Again how did From 'get' this so easily on their first try?

The way the map is revealed is so fucking good. Like, you keep thinking "this'll be the end now' but the the map gets a smidgen bigger. And bigger. And bigger.

what happened there? Watching on a phone so can’t quite see what happens in the second phase.

It looked like he and his mimic cast dragon rot breath just as phase two transitioned, then for some reason it was like FG had super rot in effect and his health bar just drained artificially quickly and he died! lol. Very weird!

Yeah something like that. I didn't even realise it was happening until he died. I was getting ready to run round behind him and attack again.

Yeah those guys, thanks. I dont have any Faith!

I used a seal that boosted my faith by five to use a holy damage sword (Golden Epitaph from the Auriza hero grave) for them and the resurrecting skellies.

Phase two of the fire giant is absolute bullshit

If you need a hint:

Spoiler

There's an NPC summon, Alexander, the pot guy, for this fight that's easy to miss. Makes the fight a lot easier and the NPC gives you an amazing Talisman at the end of his questline. Worth doing his quest for the Talisman and boss fight.

If you cast a heal spell and they get caught in it they are immediately stunned though they don't stay stunned for very long. Even the lowest level heal spell does this to them so worth getting if you can, everyone should have at least 12 Faith so they can cast Flame Cleanse Me which cures rot/poison/etc... and that's also enough to cast a basic heal spell.

You can do it however you want really - I think I did all of the Lakes, then the Academy, then south Caelid including the swamp, Selia, Gowry/Millicent stuff, and Redmane/Radahn. And there are lots of other areas you can go to which Ranni's quest should lead you to, which ultimately intertwine with D & Fia's quests if you keep exploring. Then I did some of Altus/Gelmir/Volcano Manor, before going back to Caelid to do all the stuff in the northern bit, which is higher level than the south. And then you have the Capital too which you can fit in whenever you want really. There's absolutely loads of content in the level 70-110 bracket, and you can mostly tackle it however you like.

Exactly that, and it makes the traversing even more terrifying and exciting when there's a very real chance of it all going to hell. Even Aunty Nasty was getting vertigo and nausea whenever I spun the camera around in Haligtree. I just love that feeling of complete terror and panic subsiding when you get to safe ground. It's so addictive and of course the great Michael Zaki knows this.

I thought the lighting and architectural/structural design on both Haligtree and Crumbling Farum were extraordinary. It felt like every view was considered and framed like something from a movie or concept art still. Everything is refined and executed with tremendous amounts of care and detail. The engravings, mouldings and statues are phenomenal works of art in their own right, Haligtree in particular is staggering. I spent ages looking around at the art and trying to figure out its meanings. And all completely optional. Madness.

I prefer the game when Torrent is unavailable.

What blew my mind, and I’m sure it’s probably already been mentioned…

Spoiler

…is that all those random chunks of architecture littered around the landscape are pieces of Farum Azula that have fallen from the sky. Amazing!

You can infer this (or something like it) from the very beginning of the game if you look at the item descriptions for the sanctuary stones, which you find embedded into the pieces of ruin all over Limgrave.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sanctuary stone!

It's great how different builds throw up different challenges. With my smash-hammer strength build, Elemer of the Briar was nothing. Beat him first time, easily.

But with my dagger 'n' buckler parry build, he's a different beast entirely. I had to properly learn the fight, all the dodge timings and parry timings. Took me over an hour of repeated attempts last night. It was great.

They're the little glowing things you find on the surface of ruin chunks. You'll find loads of them in CFA, and in the ruins that surround the

Beast Clergyman's palace in North Caelid.

I'm not sure what the deal is with the beastmen and CFA in general, really. Waiting for Vaati to tell me.
