I went on a wander North from the starting point (no chance of beating Margit just yet) all the way past a rickety church to a map fragment marker, thinking it would be useful to see my immediate area in more detail since I was spending so much time there. I absolutely was *not* expecting it to show a massive, entirely unexplored region when I next checked.

I also got into a fight with a couple of mini-bosses - a fireball chucking prisoner who reminded me of a miniature Ornstein in appearance, and an absolute bastard of a scythe/magic wielding invader in a place I wasn't expecting (that said, as soon as I saw the arena I said to myself that I would definitely be fighting *something* there).  Sorry it's a bit vague but I'm very wary of spoiling anything for anybody else!

Ok, caves is not my thing.

First cave full of small super annoying Goblins hanging from the the roof. Impossible to spot and somehow they seem to spawn behind me and suddenly there was 4 instead of 2. 1 flask left, yellow wall, big guy, dead. Ok, back to the open world.

Second cave, two undeads, easy, only issue they raise an alarm as soon as they spot me. Now 6 undeads in a narrow passage, dead. Ok, back to the open world.

Third cave, rat, chest, WTF where did I go? Centipede walking upright, very slow, nice, easy to block and dodge. But with a ranged attack that takes 75% of my health and it turns out they were 2. Dead. At least I found 5 smithing stones (I hope you keep them upon death?) and a way out. Found two spells, arc something and a guy with a automatic bow that riddled me with arrows like it was a Gatling gun. Dead.

Then it was time for work.

A top tip for spotting camouflaged enemies, pressing lock on R3 will always target them. When first entering a small or poorly lit area it is good to get in the habit of scanning and hitting lock on a few times before proceeding.

Love the item that drops your summon sign at all nearby summoning posts. Got confused when someone summoned me to fight patches though.

Spend around half my time in the game in other people's maps.

Is that a ring ?

I’m facing Magrid. I’m a level 17 who started as a astrologist so ranged spell casting as a thing.

My stats are focussed on spells. Is there a way I can upgrade my staff? Should I be able to beat Magrid where I am as I must have tried 30 times and even with a npc summon I’m still not taking him lower than 30% health and that’s on a good run.

I get that I need to level up my sword still as a close weapon. Just venting. :(

Seems a bit low level to me.

I hope that new thread title is ironic.

Either that or someone's very disappointed with it.

Just catching up with the earlier pages of the thread, enjoying the intense hyperbole from early reactions.

Heard this lovely operatic singing voice while south of

Spoiler

The erdtree on Weeping peninsula.

Followed it to find a scabby harpy woman on the rocks, facing the sea, luring men to their doom.

She ain’t singing anymore.

Gotta be there in the top 5 tips.  Also keep your equipped items to to minimum since fumbling around between them has cost me countless boss battles.

Reached the Storm castle boss but he's tough.

One gripe I have is with pushing the left stick to dismount, it's far too easy to do that inadvertently  cost me many times in the tree defender battle.

Managed to get a club and a falchion last night. Have upgraded my sword once but am hesitant at the moment as I'm going quality build and the stats on these things are pretty poor. I'd imagine this is because the game is that much bigger this time out, so I think I'll hold off for now. Managed to solo four bosses on my starting stats, so I'm not too worried...yet.

I managed to end up somewhere that is obviously way beyond me for now and ended up running a gauntlet of unfriendly bods and ended up in...fuck knows what you'd call it. I hope the Tokyo police don't ever search Miyazaki's office for drugs, as they don't look kindly on that sort of thing.

This is a very mild spoiler, but I'll put it in tags in case you don't want to know, but re Margit and Stormveil castle

Spoiler

There's another way to get to the other side of the castle if you're an observant explorer..

That's another reason this is the Best Game.

Yeah I struggle with this too. PTSD flashbacks to all those accidental panic melees in COD multiplayer modes of yore.

I tried to simply unbind the button for an Erdtree Avatar fight but you have to bind it to *something* and I couldn't find a place for it to go that didn't inconvenience me in some other way.

One thing I think is great about the game is the freedom you have to explore pretty much the entire landmass from the get go.  E.g. on a new game I could basically just ride Torrent all the way to Claymore if I wanted to get and use that.  It's very cool.  Game's gonna be mad for specialised runs once I know what I'm doing.

No it looks a bit like a slingshot, I can't remember where I collected it.  (it's actually a martyr effigy)

You just use it and it makes you available to be summoned at any location in the game.

I stopped using it cos I got fed up of being summoned to fight the Tree Sentinel!!

About 25 hours in and absolutely loving this, only done 2 main quest bosses as well.  I just love exploring and doing coop/helping people.

Quick question

Spoiler

I've been around a lot of areas on the map and have only found a few map fragments in the open world so a lot of the map is covered but has some light of graces unlocked.  Do all areas have maps in the open world or are some hidden inside areas etc ?  Probably just not looking hard enough and the game is so full of stuff probably just missing them

Yeah, the area I was 'shuttled' to made the opening area seem like a well-planned, middle-class leafy suburb.

As much as I disliked the first proper look at the open world a player gets, even I wouldn't say it's 360 graphics.

I mean, we've gone from this:

Xbox 360 Dark Souls

To this:

PC Elden Ring

I stand by my comment that the yellow leaved trees look dogshit from a distance, they just look flat, and it's odd that the devs went with those for the first proper introduction to the open world when there are so many stunning vistas (the sea views are immense!)

So barely any time to play today.

But a quick visit this morning saw me clear out the Limgrove mines.  So I now have a +3 Greatsword thanks to all the smithing stones.

Later on I think I will explore the Weeping Peninsula more as have to take something to Castle Morne.

Stormveil gets tough quite quickly doesn't it.

What did you use to clear out the mines? - found they weren't taking much damage from the weapon I have.

I thought the first view of the Open World was jaw dropping!

Greatsword in one hand, torch in other.

Took my time and used wolf summon once I got to the mini boss and took him down first time.

He is slow but can hit hard if you aren't careful.

Oh, and I noticed some great incidental lore/storytelling under the tree:

  Reveal hidden contents

After you beat the stone dog/cat thing you can see corpses tangled up in the roots as if trying to climb up. Outside the area you can see “hollows” clawing at the ground, trying to do the same. And I think one of the NPCs said that to “live as the dead” you need to reach the tree…

Also reminded me of similar imagery in Y’arghul in Bloodborne.

I’ve only played through DaS to completion but that’s one of the things I loved about that game, the way it doesn’t have overblown cutscenes to tell bits of the story. Its done through incidental detail. Love it.

20 hours in and I've only just realised L1/L2 on the horse swipes the sword to the left. Fucking hell. Oh yeah, I swear I saw somebody in a YouTube video dismount from Torrent with a jump? How on earth do you do that?

  Reveal hidden contents

holy shit, that view. Now I'm thinking Limgrave was basically the plateau in BOTW...

Just press the dismount button when he' going at full speed, I think ... I've done it a few times without really knowing how.
