That's interesting, I don't know any young folk that are into the Souls games, but it has all the hallmarks of something that audience would enjoy. As Five Nights at Freddies and its offspring have shown, younguns love piecing together lore and secrets, and the open world/more accessible nature will help as well as its more familiar. Maybe this is the one to really break through to that market. The series has definitely picked up a lot more younger fans too thanks to prominent Youtubers like Pewdiepie and Jacksepticeye playing stuff like Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 in the last year.

Souls games are very watchable on stream due to seeing someone struggle and overcome the obstacles in the worlds so I'm sure that element has definitely made the games more mainstream.

It's in the

Spoiler

Academy at the bottom of the Blighttown style lift. According to the wiki it "renders the wearer immune to fall damage. However, it cannot prevent falling to one's death." and a lot of people are complaining it doesn't work. Oh well. I think a lot of falls trigger instadeath to prevent boundary breaks anyway, but it'd be funny to lead an invader off a cliff.

Just checked and I’ve actually opened all of the open world map and been everywhere now. Done that using a base character, with base weapons, no trouble at all. Also completed some of the lift stuff too. It’s really cool that it gives you the freedom to just go off and explore.

Really?!

How did you

Spoiler

Get past the Draconic tree sentinel to get into the royal capital at base level?! Is there another way in there? Also how do you get up the broken bridge into Mount Germir? That one seems like a full on dead end to me that I assumed would require killing something to progress past. I’ve been trying to do basically what you said and push as far around the map as possible, but I’m finding some dead ends.

Do you manage the whole cliff and mine ascent to go round the lift and get onto the plateau and beat the dragon at the top?! You must be an absolute monster

You can't fall from any height. It works as intended. It just means no damage will be recieved, until you hit the height that would cause insta-death. So those not quite killable falls will leave you with full health rather than half.

I've been trying to farm for an imp axe thing for my bleed/arcane build.  My main file has about 5 of them.  Can I get one to drop?  Even with silver chicken feet?  Can I fuck.

I got their hat though!! :D

Snap!

Right, after rinsing Weeping Peninsula (for now, I'll be back), it's time to tackle the castle. The real Elden Ring starts here, etc...

Is it the consensus that jellyfish is the best summons? I've only really used (and levelled) the wandering nobles so far - they are pretty useless but give me a few seconds cover which has been useful a few times, most notably when taking down the mounted tree sentinel right at the start.

Jellyfish is bae. Mine is +4 and is the ultimate tank distraction.

I haven’t done any of that yet. I haven’t even done the “first boss” yet! That’s what’s really cool - it lets you go off in any direction, explore and create your own adventure. So far, I’ve done loads of mini dungeons, the underground River, the Tree Sentinel, Morne Castle, climbed Caelid Tower, done one of the Four Belfries, a couple of the lift bosses,  but mostly just been exploring and discovering places. 100s of places! I’ve been playing for almost 60hrs now and just been enjoying exploring the world.

You only have to find the map fragments in each area to unlock the map. I’m guessing what you’ve mentioned maybe isn’t classed as part of the open world itself? Not sure, just going on what I’ve looked at online to check how much I’ve unlocked.

Brilliant news and, of course, well deserved as this game is a legitimate masterclass in game design.

I do hope the industry looks at the success of a game that pisses all over the icon splattered maps and quest log horrors of the ubisoft open world model utilised by so many games of the genre and that some devs decide to try something different. Amazing to see this success despite FROM making the mistake of releasing a game that is not exactly like BOTW and that has 360/PS2 era graphics.

It is heartening that an awful lot of players are happy to be thrown into a world and make sense of it without the endless hand holding and tedious exposition that has become the norm so I hope all the folk who may be new to Soulsborne games, or who have been deterred/bounced off in the past,  like Miyazaki's unique approach to game deign and world building enough to go back and try the earlier games...

It'll depend what stage in the game you're at. Some of the summons you start getting around the second dungeon area make the starting summons look a bit pathetic.

It also depends on the situation. Crowd control you might want a summon with multiple helpers. I personally found the jellyfish by far the best for Godrick but then I had leveled it up the most too.

Morning star worth taking the hit in dps for the bleed effect? Cos if so, I’ll start smithing this one instead of continuing with my sword.

Got a really nice sword waiting for me when I can carry it better, but if the bleed effect is worth it then this might be a nice stop gap. It’s quicker too.

The attack power is per hit not DPS isn't it?

Funnily enough I didn't think I could even summon for Godrick. Maybe because I tried when I'd already summoned other players ? Can you not summon spirits and players at the same time or something?

Shame they're not as fast as they look like they should be!!

I've also got twin flails... So now I have bleed damage covered for standard, slash, and strike weapons :D

..well, as soon as I up my Dex to 24 so I can use the black knight flail!! Looks beastly.

Yup, it depends. The jellyfish can poison some bosses and you can just watch them tick down. Otherwise, if the boss has zero poise, the wolves are absolute saviours. They just won me my second great rune. Very good boys.

Someone earlier in the thread posted a screenshot of where I got to before going further down but I couldn't find it to let them know I'd now found that place. You can see it from the roof area with no clear way of getting there. There's a locked/one way door at the Liftside Chamber Grace, it's on the other side of that. Area isn't large but has a nasty enemy lol.

Spoiler below is how to get there

  Reveal hidden contents

Head to where I've circled and jump up on to the ledge at the back and work your way around Then just follow the path and it will take you to the locked door at the Grace which you can now open, then head down

There's also another one of these doors that I presume takes you to above the room with the Grafted Scion (there's an item and a chest that you can see above you in that room), but I can't figure out how to get to it

edit: Found it, wasn't worth it 😕

This was me, thanks! It was in the Q&A thread.

Wowsers, I assumed the wandering nobles were a joke as, well, they’re a group of wandering nobles and not fighters at all. The wolves and jellyfish are good, lasting nearly all the Margit fight etc

Dunno. Look, I’m coming from a certain background and trying to wean myself off of it 😆 you know what I mean!

Jellyfish fo life to.

Mines named Jerome and very helpful he is too.

Think I've levelled him to +4 as well so far.

Yes, I need to go get this friend I think. Would help me take down the Erdtree Avatar I know I can beat if it just gives me two seconds to catch my breath. I can’t reliably roll out the way for 4 straight minutes.

I haven’t got the jellyfish but my testing suggests the three dogs and the big dickhead bull horned archer from underground are the best ones.
