Not that long, erm, 22 hours (!) and level 27. Started as a wretch.

That's a lot of time to not even see the first boss IMHO.  Not saying that's a bad thing at all btw. Honest.

17 hrs now and L31 I think. Not played today yet. I need to hit something with my big swords it will be cathartic.

I gotta be honest this game is pretty impressive so far.  So much so I'm wondering why we can't have Gamepass subscription holidays.

Can't see anything else getting a look in at the moment.

Not even sure what direction it's in

I've killed a few bosses though!

I know all the reviews said it was big and everyone who played it pre-release said it was big, but I still can't wrap my head around how big it is...Limgrave seemed big enough on its own at the time and now it feels like it was a little sandpit or something. You think you know where the limits of the map are and it just keeps expanding and expanding.

Also just fell victim to the biggest troll from From I think I've seen yet in this game. I know there are people who swear blind that everything in a From game is 100% fair and foreseeable but those people are damn liars. It was funny though.

Spoiler

Got to the Four Belfries, chose one of the locations to warp to. Got taken to the island opposite Stormveil castle. There's some butterflies on a cliff edge, I run towards them and the cliff edge breaks off and I fall to my doom. Played like a fiddle.

I'm enjoying strength, it's only really a problem against enemies with lots of poise but you can stunlock a lot of big enemies and bosses in this game which compensates for the lack of speed v nicely imo. Guard counters, jump R2s and Ashes are all very important too of course. I'm constantly surprised by the size of enemy I'm putting on the fucking floor.

Definitely doing a DEX playthrough though, some of the weapons look really fun and it seems bleed is very good on a lot of problematic bosses.

I'll be interested to hear where the soft/hard caps are over time as I think they might be a good bit higher than we're used to. Would make sense given how much bigger the game is, I suppose.

@Alan Stockre illusory walls: I've only found a few. There are several in one particular mining tunnel but they're not hidden passages so much as the only way forward, so it's sort of obvious. Another is in a certain location later in the game and an NPC nearby specifically refers to hearing noises behind the walls, which is your hint.

Holy shit, I just stumbled across the biggest in game dragon I’ve ever seen. So big I thought it part of the landscape for a bit until it woke up.

Are there other dragons around it?

If so, almost 100k runes for taking it down if you use a golden pickle foot

I thought I was done with exploring the Peninsula yesterday but going back today I realised that, actually, I had only pottered over half of it.

The half I did tonight starred an excellent, very hard hitting, tree boss which was fun. I then got a bit lost trying to get over/around a ravine and ended up falling into it. Found a decent sized mine with a load of Smithy stones guarded by winged, gurning,  Boris Johnsons! Most repulsive creatures yet...

I must get back on the story path really but it is just so great just nosing about the place.

Spoiler

Go around his right side and attack his tail, he wont move and you can kill him, takes a while as his HP is around 70k

Are the positive reviews and online hype for this purely from people who have played the other “Souls” games or something?

I bought this after seeing lots of thread activity here and elsewhere, and lots of “best game ever!” remarks, but not really knowing anything about it.

I’ve now played it for an hour and still don’t know anything.

Successes:

Picking flowers

Killing tortoises

Failures:

Everything else

Like some bloke told me to go to a castle on a cliff but nope that’s not happening. There’s seemingly no way of knowing what “level” a mob is so it’s usually trial and error of hit it and then run off if it did next to no damage, or stay and try to fight it and inevitably die.

I couldn’t even killed some Beastman thing after killing a load of wolves, and all the [annoying] messages on the floor nearby told me what a weak foe it was.

I’ve literally no clue how to obtain more spells, or items or what.

I just don’t think it’s for me.

If I have to watch an 18 minute YouTube video just to know anything about how to play a game, it’s not a good sign.

So, found a faraway village. Picked up some very nice goodies with some OK enemies. Discovered the boss and… it absolutely squashed me with just its first attack. 😅🥳🙆‍♂️

So good.

Every new player seems to go through this roller coaster. @Davros sock drawerdid it when I tried selling demon's souls to him. And look at him now.

You'll either transcend it and see it on the other side after some pain or forever be ignorant of the joys of the series.

Give up now and miss out or stick with it until it clicks and fall in love so deep nothing will ever quite come close to a Fromsoft Souls game.

Your choice.

No not purely but fair to say most people posting here or reviewing this are familiar enough with the dark souls games to understand the most basic elements.

So I'm kind of behind with some stuff at work so I need to knuckle down for a week or two to catch up. I basically entirely disconnected my PC and stored it away until I get my shit done.

I haven't had to do that since uni final year exams. Ugh and now I keep coming in the thread.

I’ve been there. Bloodborne kicked my arse twice before I finally pushed through the pain barrier. It’s so weird to even type this, why play anything that can invoke frustration and anger and futility? But it is true, something will click if you persist, and the shitty (but brilliant) thing is that that isn’t a single event because it’ll click/unclick/click/unclick several times before it truly grabs something right inside you because you know, despite protestations, it now owns you and you have to keep trying, keep getting better, keep learning. Because it’s fucking brilliant.

Was about to post the same thing. They’ve just got me with it too! At least you can get your Runes back no problem.

The bit after the boss showed how dropping the music out completely really helps with the atmosphere instead of having constant orchestral drones.

So, having played through lots of tough sections and found the invisible enemies annoying and quite badly designed it appears they’re not actually meant to be invisible. Just been running along in the open world and it’s happened a few times and appears to be draw in/pop up. You don’t see them until you run into them or they hit you, Not happened too often thankfully, but hopefully they can sort that out, as it’s well ropey.

Edit - Can’t make my mind up if they’re supposed to be invisible or not. Hear a teleporting sound when I run into them or they appear, so maybe it’s not a glitch. Fucking annoying when you get insta-killed though!

You don't have to watch, or read, anything.

You just have to play and you will learn enough of how the world and the systems work to start slowly making progress and will soon be entirely comfortable with a game that does not offer you the guidance, direction, and hand holding of more conventional approaches to player engagement. It's best to entirely forget everything that is the norm from other open world games for starters...

If it's not for you then just walk away but it does seem that there are quite a few folk in here who are new to FROM games and who seem to be finding this the one that they are clicking with. That may be due to there being considerably more options for learning and exploring the world without hitting the difficulty spikes of previous games.

Re: parrying, there's one more aspect to it in this game, the enemies have an invisible posture gauge (annoyingly referred to as 'super armour', lol) which you need to break in order to get a riposte in the usual dark souls sense.

Some enemies will need more than one parry to achieve this.  But it does mean you can actually parry and riposte bosses these days!

Don't suppose anyone knows of any videos or anything demonstrating this?

Do you mean (for some enemies) you have to kind of chain parrys in order to get the "dunnnn" sound and a chance for a critical? Or is a reposte something else?

Glitch in which I called the horse to escape some knights, only it didn't appear under me, and I just got stuck mid-air in a sort of falling animation as the whole squad impaled me.

Was this on beeg
