Academy done ...

Spoiler

Unless I've missed something important ? Done the witch of the full moon boss ... Then headed off to explore some routes I'd ignored and ended up traipsing across the rooftops and eventually ending up back in the Church of the Cuckoo, right near the start, but up in the roof this time. Saw off a few enemies up there including a guy with the Aveline crossbow, who seemed to be guarding a special staff ... That seemed like the end of the line for that path. Anyone know if I missed anything major?

Weeping Peninsula question:

Spoiler

Is there an obvious way to free the statue-headed woman in the basement in the Witch Bane ruins? The one who is tied up against the wall by crystals? I've exhausted her dialogue and thought attacking her restraints might break her free, but nothing happens.

I've killed the walking mausoleum nearby but not gone back.

Excellent session again tonight exploring this whole new area. Tomorrow I'm off to Morne!

What. A. GAME.

What weapon/ash/spirits (if any) did you use to beat the boss?

Me?

I'm using the Lordsworn Greatsword which I've had pretty much since the start, upgraded to magic +5 with the Carian Grandeur ash. And the jellyfish spirit (not upgraded).

Not sure, the messages left by other players seemed to make me think that just talking to her was enough?  Maybe she turns up later.

How do I equip a great rune?

Edit: never mind , done it.

However, it doesn't seem to actually do anything ...

I've just awakened and equipped Godricks Great Rune, which according to the description should raise all my attributes. It doesn't actually seem to, though, as my status screen doesn't show any increase ... Anyone got any idea about this?

And that’s Margit fully smashed up. Found the key to him is rolling into his attacks and his front/feet and then blocking for a split second, not to actually block but it seems some of his attacks then go over your head and you can counter easier. Really nice boss, definitely seems to be a bit of a tutorial, teaching players that you need to fight from range and up close. Looking forward to getting into the more classic Souls gameplay now after all the wandering around exploring.

Just equipping the great rune doesn't give you any effect though I agree the description makes it sound like it should. You have to use a rune arc to activate the equipped great rune, though you'll lose the effect when you die. It boosts all your attributes by 5 levels.

Making progress in the quest now ...

Spoiler

In fact from what Not Sean Bean just told me, it sounds like I'm ready for the endgame - I skipped talking to him after getting the first great rune, so when I spoke to him after getting the second, he gave me both speeches one after the other ... First telling me I need to seek more great runes before I'm ready to go to the capital city. Then straight afterwards telling me I'm ready now. Guessing that's the end game, and you only need 2 parts of the Elden Ring before you can attempt it.

I've spent over an hour chasing a sorcerer named Miriam around a research place, determined to beat her, but it seems it's impossible. Trolled again by Miyazaki.

Reminds me of a time I spent hours chasing a sorcerer called Michelob around a lecture hall.

Man, this really is on just a whole other level. It’s just astronomically good! Feels like a whole other game now that I’m in the castle. It’s trolled me with jumps, explosives, pitch black rooms, sneaky enemies, craftily placed items all within the first 15 mins of getting here. I’m literally sat on the edge of my seat, slowly creeping forwards. The atmosphere and sense of tension is amazing, absolutely love the SFX and music  too.

Just worked my way up a tower and wandered out onto a ledge, overlooking the sea and a few seemingly random Rocky outcrops. But then I did a double take......“Oh my god! That’s where I was transported to, when I fought that boss 20hrs ago”! Got that Souls sense of “aaaaah, I’m back here!” on an epic scale. Just can’t stop playing this, the sense of progression and wanting to push forwards is totally unparalleled.

20 hours on the clock and I’ve just had my first crack at Godrick. He smashed me six ways from Sunday.

Ah same! Glad someone's around the same as me - I was starting to worry that I was complete ass.

have set myself up for a harder game by picking the wretch?

I don't think so.

I think, aside from Dark Souls 2, this is the best game to start with Deprived/Wretch class. Sure, you might feel a little bit more exposed and the club animations may not be very responsive - but the damage output, emphasis on rolling, and ability to spec in any direction is hugely beneficial in the mid-long term.

I would just suggest trying to stick on your horse for tougher battles, farm some strong early game items (such as the Brass Shield), and don't be afraid to use summoning for a little outside help.

Started this tonight, never played a game like this before other than bloodborne for about 20 minutes

Picked the mature hairy male wretch as my starting character (modelled on me)

2 hours in and i’m getting in to it, avoiding larger enemies where I can as I keep getting battered, ventured into a cave earlier but retreated immediately

I’ve read that I missed the tutorial completely at the start too, have I set myself up for a harder game by picking the wretch?

Yes initially. If you find yourself wanting to quit in frustration almost straight away reroll with a different character

So chuffed to have solo killed the boss (early-mid game)

Spoiler

In the area behind the stone key door right at the start of the game.

Third time too! I did try summoning help but I died immediately on that attempt haha.

The reward

Spoiler

An awesome knight summon

Is now my first choice for sure, it's incredibly powerful!

It briefly increases your poise when consumed. So no benefit, really!

From a purely gameplay perspective I suppose you could say this.

But you get to have secret conversations with her while she gives you cuddles!!
