One thing I'm still struggling with is knowing when an enemy is going to follow up an attack with another attack. That's why in that CK vid sometimes I'm just standing there while he's open. It's because previously I've been caught by an attack there and I'm waiting for it. It's probably to do with my positioning and the bosses stamina but I'm still not great at reading that. It was especially true with Margit as well. I realise it's not random (and I know we've been over that in this thread ;)) but I still haven't fully got the hang of it. It'll come though I think.

When From wants to be an absolute dick, From gives enemies multiple attack strings that are essentially the same but some have extra attacks to create FUD.

The amount of runes you get from beating Crucible Knight bore no relation to how hard it was to heat Crucible Knight.

I went down the Graveyard at the start. Hilarious. From blocking it by requiring two Stone Keys is their definitions of accessible, in case someone picked one for their gift at the start.

It's pretty much half of my advice for Margit. Even if he doesn't always do a follow-up, just assume that he will.

Nice one mate, enjoyed watching this! This has been my favourite fight so far too.

Cheers! I'm uploading boss fights as I go.

Spoiler

Some of the early ones are very much me bumbling through the first stages of the game though :D

Yeah that's what I ended up doing. I backed off so much for Margit.. and I feel it's no coincidence that Godrick reeeallly punishes you super hard for backing up!

I love it when you get a new weapon and totally smash through a group of enemies with no hassle, leaving you feeling like a boss, then you meet a bigger enemy that kills you in two hits.

Nothing more humbling 😆

When i first got the BASTARD Sword it was useless.

When i first...got it

I've discovered my first boss that I have absolutely no chance whatsoever of defeating with my current stats/equipment. In a cave in Caelid, north east of

The Church of the Plague grace site, it's called Sellia Hideaway. The boss is

  Hide contents

Three Crystallian warriors, one with a staff, one with a spear and one with a ringblade. Oh and all their attacks cause scarlet rot buildup. They only take damage from strike attacks, but that's ok because I have a big hammer. It doesn't do a lot of damage, but it does some, unlike my main weapon (Lordsworn's Heavy Greatsword +7)

Thing is, they all have fast combo attacks, and when they all decide to do them at the same time, there's no way you're avoiding them. I try siccing my trusty Banished Knight Oleg on them and he doesn't even survive long enough for me to kill one of them, which would make things much easier.

I think either there's some trick with them, like there's a key item you find which drastically weakens them, or I'm going to have to level up A LOT. I'm currently level 52, but it's nowhere near high enough.

It's really disheartening. It's the first time I've thought "I've had enough of this now" while playing Elden Ring.

Spoiler

The Crystal dudes take HUGE damage on crit attacks when you break their poise. Keep hammering them with heavy and jump heavy. It's a war of attrition though!

He's got a blanket over his legs which is buzzing with flies, and you can see thorns poking out here and there. I spoke to D about him, and he said something about 'The Mark of the Centipede' and how he's rotting from the inside out.

Fucking grim. :(

To do with his quest.

Dude nice parrying! I've kinda stopped trying in this game to be honest but you had the timing right way more than not. Might be inspired to practice more after that! Looked super satisfying.

It's such a cool boss. I definitely could have been more aggressive in mine like you say but I feel that's not my strength in these games. Often I just feel like if I'm patient enough then I'll win eventually haha (adapting to Bloodborne was a bit of a rough ride :D). I do kinda love the tension of a long flight though.

One thing I'm still struggling with is knowing when an enemy is going to follow up an attack with another attack. That's why in that CK vid sometimes I'm just standing there while he's open. Keep the boss videos coming guys!

Crucible Knight has a few attacks you can always attack after, I think. Eg one is a weird slow hit from the right side of the screen, he always stands still after that.  The shield bash too, he can hit straight after it, but if you're quick enough to hit him you can always dodge any follow up he does. Well.. Until the second phase, where puts another attack on the end, the bastard.

The parries were interesting, you can parry a good selection of his attacks, maybe even all with the right timing, I just found that one after the big two handed stomp the easiest to see coming and execute.

Wish I'd used more jumping though. Didn't think to jump over the ground stomp at all, seems so obvious! Also want to test for i frames on jumping. Though I'd imaging they'd be tight and at the very start, if anywhere.

Just did that one last night. Not too bad in the end, especially with a light load and high mag resistance.

Now I'm struggling with another horsey prick elsewhere.

That completely ruined my attempts. I'd got to the point where I was forward rolling behind through most of his attacks and getting a quick hit in, then suddenly my whole strategy was wrecked. I've since gone back and done him after levelling up at least.

Does a backstab not count as a critical? My backstabs were doing eff all to the two spinny bastards I ran into last night. I'm just noping out of those fights for now.

Should do. My Greataxe was ripping a third of their health bar off doing em.

I kinda regret going Astronomer but I’m a bit too all in now. Some of the faith enemies seem much cooler.

Nah it takes a while going but gets pretty good. I found a katana from a boss that c scales with magic and with Dex and it absolutely destroying at plus 4. Use that for mobs to save my FP for a couple of crazy strong spells I found.

A tooltip in the loading screen says that backstabs aren't as damaging as exhausting an enemy's stamina and then getting the crit attack. Backstabs seem slightly nerfed compared with the other games.

On a related note, it's taken 35 hours of play to realise, but the Guard Counter thing in this is a revelation, and really easy to pull tof: just block an attack and then press RT/R2. A little flash plays and then you immediately follow with a big hit, which is normally poise breaking. Works well if you jump attack first, then block and immediately counter. A good way to stagger an enemy for the aforementioned crit hit.

Spoiler

Fighting Royal Knight Loretta, another big bastard on a horsie. Seems straightforward and I have a +5 jellyfish as a decoy, but I'm still getting twatted. It's really aggressive with the homing glintstone spells and archery in the second half - hard to get a hit in!

Question for anyone who has explored Stormveil castle:

Spoiler

I am trying to find a way to get the big lift to work, the top of which is close to a site of grace.

Is the solution obscure or obvious? I have explored all over the castle as far as it seems possible for me to currently access including a few hops over walls and onto rooftops but just cannot find the way down. There is also one door locked from the other side so I am sure there is more to find.

Being as opaque/non spoilery as possible in your answer, should I even be looking from inside the castle and it it isn't something stupidly obscure like an illusionary wall that I've missed is it? I just need to know that I am on the right path as it is getting a little frustrating now...

Spoiler

From the Grace by the top of the lift, go out on the balcony with the sword feet birds. There’s a ‘rampart’ bit on the left with one of the birds on. Drop down from there and work your way round.

Guard Counter absolutely wrecks some enemies. I almost think maybe I should stop using it with Barricade Shield as it makes enemies with no poise too easy. For most of the bosses though I haven't found it that useful, with the exception of:

Spoiler

Leonine of Mistbegotten. Who just staggers so easily.

In hindsight Barricade Shield didn't do much against CK though and I should probably have swapped it out for something else. Guard Counter seems to consume quite a lot of stamina, so if it doesn't stagger then you can be left exposed.

You're actually talking about two different places here. For the other one, try to find the source of the clinking noise you hear in the courtyard.

I just checked and I am a worrying 43.5 hours in (and about Lvel 43 too, which is nice) and have also just defeated the second proper boss so it's likely going to be 100+ hours to get to the end at this rate.

I'm trying not to stress about my clock time. I think I've seen much less of the game than some with similar times, but if you're enjoying it then why not take your time! You only get to experience a game like this blind once so the more hours the better in some ways :).

You say this like its a bad thing! I'm in no rush whatsoever. Once it's done I'll never get to experience it fresh again.

I can't imagine playing this again to be honest, just like I can never imagine playing BOTW again. You can never capture that feeling of exploration and discovery again and I just can't imagine wanting to scour every inch of the landscape of a second time again so I don't mind if my first playthrough takes hundreds of hours.

That's not a slight against the game in any way, these kind of experiences are just one and done things for me.
