Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion Announced

I lost 56k runes last night in the Capital and wasn’t even annoyed as that place is so damn good that I just spent more time in there exploring. Just like Stormveil, if the Capital was one entire game it would still most probably be game of the year!

Yeah, I'm pretty much settled upon the idea that this game is ending somewhere in my top 5, but I can't yet commit myself because I haven't completed it. I can't even remember when I had this feeling of pure entertainment no matter what I'm doing within the game before this. Metroid Prime maybe? Its arrival is an "extinction level event" in terms of video games to me.

Pure entertainment no matter what you're doing is right: the game respects your time and lets you play it exactly however you want. And also, the important difference compared to Souls games or Bloodborne or whatever, is it literally doesn't matter if you get stuck or bored on something. You can leave where you've been poking around in at any time and go somewhere else. The tension of the game is still there, as you have to progress steadily to unlock sections in new areas, but the scope for playing it how you want is just shot through the whole thing.

No interminable cut scenes, no handholding, and the ability to use some investigation and experimentation or even summon help to get around tricky sections. No quest markers, just a compass and a map you can fill in yourself. You're always in control, and always able to go where you want, when you want, and you know you'll find something amazing when you get there.

It's just staggering.

I was strangely disappointed to discover about three mausoleums in really close proximity to each other last night. Not sure why they're so bunched together when the map is so huge, it took away some of their mystique seeing them so bunched together if that makes any sense.

There's a lore-related reason for that which makes it more cool/horrible.

Spoiler

The nearby point of grace is called 'Mausoleum Compound'; I think the suggestion is that they're being bred or created there and then kept locked away by the natural environment. That's what I read from it, anyway.

I wonder if the mausoleums are somehow related to the

giant tortoise pope

you also encounter nearby.

Love to see From doing their normal thing of “hey, you know that early boss that wrecked you repeatedly? Well, they’re just normal enemies now. Enjoy!”

and the old classic “hey, you know that horrible boss you eventually beat? Well now the room is smaller and there’s two of them. Enjoy!”

Also, is anyone else fucked at the moment? Like get-your-holy-weapon-out-and-strike-me-down fucked?

Every night I plan to wrap up at midnight, only to do 'one more quick thing' again. And again. Before going to bed at 3:30am every night.

Yep. Been surviving on 5 hours of sleep a night since it launched. I could pass for hollowed.

Great game this - right up there.  I think I still prefer BOTW because it's me and I prefer the more connected world and the climb/glide anywhere nature of it.

It's a real shame though that absolutely none of my sons friends are playing this - he's 15 and he's the only one playing it.  Dunno what it's like in the world of the other gaming da's on the forum here - but that's what it is here.

I've called my Raya Lucaria summons Burnsy, Cheeks and Gibbo - I don't think I can ever get rid of them.  They're just great.

I mean, no shred of a lie, I feel like I might currently be playing what will go on to be my favourite game. Like, ever.

It contains literally the essence of what makes computer and video games such an interesting medium. Even the janky stuff. In some cases especially that stuff.

It's an absolute triumph for player agency and self expression. Screw the meteverse, this is what it means to exist in another world and feel empowered to live out a fantasy.

It's the anti-Ubisoft. With the promise of a vast and interesting world that's actually worth exploring made flesh.

And the fact it's being played right now by millions of people sharing in the collective consciousness of the game is just incredible.

Well said, it’s just brilliant isn’t it.

I've actually been sleeping really well. Turns out playing this all-day-every-day for a week really takes it out of ya. 😴

Yeah I had been meaning to comment on this - I absolutely see what everyone meant by 'not easier, but more accessible'. First when understanding that the marika statues would drop you right outside the hard encounter you just died at, effectively a checkpoint like you'd see in most games, and also the ashes of war and talismans look like they give you a LOT of extra control about how you spec out your build, and mean you can keep using a weapon you like by making it a bit more usable across various situations where it'd otherwise have necessitated being swapped out.

I wish! Not yet no, but I'm off work for a fortnight now so this'll be me going forward.

I just lost practically the same amount there too, to a pair of stupid dogs as I was rushing.

Its an amazing area.

Yes, it's actually having quite the deleterious effect on my health. I was out yesterday until 11pm, and should have gone straight to bed.

Last night my intention was to enter the capital, I didn't even get in.

Ended up doing 2 questlines that led me to 2 more hidden boss fights.

Capital is tonight's exploration zone, left myself at the first grace inside there ready to go

Beat the Manor boss, v easily last night, second go. Was a bit shocked tbh. Jelly did most of the work distracting whilst I battered them. Most pleasing. Onwards...

Quick rllmuk password qu, is anyone on pc using it?

I feel my progress has stalled and I’ve been around level 55 for ages. Keep going to new areas, then getting brutally murdered by the boss and losing my echoes. Leading to not much progress.

It’s a bit annoying.

Crystalian bosses can do one too. I have a scythe and for my other weapon I have another scythe. I am not setup for fighting things made of crystal, all the bloody miners die easily enough. This boss pair though, it’s not happening! I’d probably do better punching them bare handed.

@Parappa My Margit fight - for reference. I just watched it back and I actually only juuust get the poison because my Jellyfish survives on a sliver of health at one point. It's definitely not a given, I think you just have to keep trying to take the focus of the boss as much as you can.

Thanks for this - I think I am trying to rush him too much and not using my defence (similar build to yours).  I shall attempt it again tonight!

GFEL? More like I FELLED THAT G.

Spoiler

Despite having a pretty straightforward moveset and no scary phase changes, I quite liked that battle in that it's the fundamentals of these kind of games (and fighting games, to an extent) - learn the startups, learn the cooldowns, react and punish. It was a bit like MTFO 2.0!
